I recently started Plyometrics to get in shape, which is when I stumbled upon the fact that these exercises require the right accessories to provide the best results. 

And the most important accessory is the shoes. But due to a large number of options, finding the most suitable shoes for Plyometrics was harder than I anticipated. That’s why I decided to put together this guide to help others facing the same problem.

I’d also like to point out that these shoes are some of the most durable ones on the market and can withstand almost anything you throw at them. What’s There Not To Like About It?

While trying out these shoes, I did notice that the size runs slightly smaller than most other brands. To overcome that, simply order a size larger, which will offer better comfort but will not be so large as to come off easily. Alternatively, you could wait for them to stretch out a bit after a few months of use.

For the highlights of these shoes, let me start with the construction. The Under Armour cross trainer uses a lightweight and abrasion-resistant mesh that has been manufactured using 3D printing to provide breathability and ensure durability during workouts. On top of that, it features UA HOVR technology that makes the shoes feel lighter and eliminates impact. 

These are also among the most lightweight training shoes that I’ve ever come across. 

Plus, they have overlapping films and an external heel counter that cradles your feet to ensure stability. It allows you to move more freely while retaining complete flexibility without losing  balance. And despite fitting snugly on your feet, these shoes provide ample space to prevent discomfort. 

Like the previous item, the Under Armour shoes are highly versatile and meant to be used in all types of situations, from running to cycling and even weightlifting. This makes them perfect for Plyometrics and strength training as well.

I’ve already mentioned the materials used in the construction of these shoes, which promote better stability and greater comfort. This is further enhanced by the design that the manufacturer has chosen for these sneakers, which provides greater freedom of movement, while also helping provide a modern aesthetic. 

Additionally, the material of the shoes has a quick drying property, making it a fantastic choice even if you spend countless hours slogging in the gym.

Those who prefer sneakers with a traditional tongue and laces might find these shoes a bit complicated. Since the laces do not feature a separate tongue, you may find getting your feet in the first few times awkward. That’s why I decided to place these shoes after the Reebok ones, which do not have this problem.

Another impressive product that I came across while researching for this guide was this weightlifting and field shoe from Adidas. This German brand dedicates itself to delivering the best experience when it comes to footwear, and this shoe is a testament to that fact.

The Adidas men’s weightlifting and field shoe is probably the best option for people who prefer rubber sneakers. Constructed from the best quality rubber and canvas material, it features a narrow-fit design for a better grip and more efficient movement. The rubber outsole further helps enhance traction, pushing your body to the limit while minimizing the chances of accidents. 

I was also quite pleased with the overall construction of these shoes and can say that they are highly durable and meant to last a long time. And since 50% of the construction materials are recycled ones, this is another option for those who prefer sustainable products. 

As for the ease of use, these trainers offer a combination of laces and velcro that keeps them secured to your feet, no matter the type of exercise you perform. Moreover, they provide adequate support to the body, which can be indispensable in the case of certain exercises and sports.

Footwear that is meant to be used for long periods regularly should be extremely comfortable, which is why I liked these Adidas shoes so much. The combination of rubber and canvas provides outstanding support without helping you feel any fatigue or discomfort, making them one of the most comfortable options on the market. 

And despite having high-quality materials and construction, the price is quite reasonable, especially compared to other similar options, which is another advantage. 

What’s There Not To Like About It?

While these shoes are superbly built and will last a long time, they are a bit heavier. So, keep that in mind before going with this option. Both the Reebok men’s trainer and the Under Armour Cross Trainers are lightweight options, which is why I’ve placed this item after them on this list.

I’ve included the New Balance trainer on this list for several reasons, the first being the design. These shoes have an ultra-sleek design that delivers exceptional comfort, whether working out in the gym or trying to improve your game. The outsole is made from solid rubber that offers multi directional traction for better stability on almost any surface. 

Then, there are the forefoot fins, a unique feature that you won’t find on most other competing products. These fins also help enhance balance, which is crucial during activities like box jumps, an important part of plyometrics.

Having a slim fit design, the New Balance shoe may not be suitable for you if you have wide feet and are used to wearing broader shoes. If that is the case, it is better to look for alternatives such as the Reebok’s men trainer, Under Armour cross trainer, or the Adidas men’s weightlifting shoe.

You also get a rubber tip that will keep you steady on the feet, while the elastic mesh liner provides a snug fit  for better support and stability.

I’ve already mentioned the exceptional build quality of these shoes that provide stability without compromising on comfort. But the manufacturer has paid attention to the design, and these trainers come with flat laces that do not get in the way while working out. Plus, they help enhance the overall design, making these shoes visually appealing as well. 

Also, it is hard to find a better option for the price at which these are available. 

What’s There Not To Like About It?

Before going with the Inov-8 cross trainer shoe, you should know that these can be a bit slippery on wooden surfaces. So, if your gym or workout area has wooden floors, it is best to look for other options. Because of this reason, these shoes are placed after the other options from Reebok, Under Armour, Adidas, and New Balance.

Buyers Guide

To prepare this guide on the best shoes for Plyometrics, I had to carefully research various options on the market and learn about their pros and cons. Thankfully, this allowed me to learn about some factors that need to be considered when buying such products. 

Keeping these factors in mind can be very helpful in selecting the most suitable option, which is why I’m going to share them here with you. 

1. The Fit

One of the most important factors you should consider when buying any type of shoes is how well they fit. Plyometrics involves a lot of jumping, which is why it is vital to have shoes that are well secured to your feet even when they are off the ground. This will ensure greater stability and prevent falls and accidents. 

When checking how well a shoe fits, you should also look for an option with an extended heel which can help maintain balance while jumping over obstacles. It can reduce the chances of injuries like sprained ankles. Also, I recommend avoiding running shoes that do not offer a lot of cushioning and support, as they can make your workout sessions unenjoyable. 

2. Comfort

During Plyometrics, your feet will constantly be leaving the floor and coming into contact with it with force. That is why it is important to use shoes that offer maximum comfort while performing jumps and other activities. Again, avoid using regular shoes that you are used to, as these are generally heavy and can restrict movement. 

Shoes designed for Plyometrics are generally lightweight to make movement easier and quicker, which is not always the case with running shoes. They should also be flexible enough and provide ample room without feeling cramped. Factors that determine how comfortable a shoe is are the cushioning, shape, and the materials. 

Materials like rubber and canvas offer a higher level of comfort than most other materials, but may offset the level of traction, so choose wisely. 

3. Traction

Balance and stability are important during workouts to prevent accidents, so I recommend shoes with a solid grip on the ground. Generally, shoes with rubber soles offer the best traction, and running shoes are not at all recommended for this purpose. 

Similarly, minimalist cross trainers may not be the best option as they are not designed for activities like box jumps and obstacle courses. In this case, you should look for something that offers greater support and stability during workout sessions. 

4. The Feel

If possible, get a feel of the shoe you are planning to buy before making a decision. This will provide you with a better idea regarding the materials used and the build quality. The best options are those that are lightweight yet provide adequate support and are durable enough to last through intense workouts. 

Apart from that, the materials used in the construction should be breathable to allow your feet to get enough air during exercises. 

5. Low-Top Shoe

Low-top shoes are best suited for Plyometrics because they offer greater mobility and are less restrictive. This is important for jump training, which is an integral part of Plyometrics. Additionally, such shoes are better suited for outdoor workouts that involve rough terrains like grassy areas or trails. 

Low-top shoes are designed to better cut through obstacles and provide faster, more efficient movement, unlike regular training shoes.

That is why shoes designed especially for Plyometrics tend to cost more than regular running or gym shoes. But it is better to spend a bit more and get better results than go with low-cost options and risk accidents and injuries.
