Best Work Boots For HVAC

Wearing the wrong footwear while working on HVAC units may leave your feet extremely sore at the end of a workday.

A few months back, my son took up maintenance work of HVAC units, and a few days later, he started complaining about foot pain. This led me to research a bit about what might be causing the pain, and the most obvious reason was the use of wrong footwear.

Hence, I took it upon myself to find a pair of work boots to provide his feet with the proper support, minimizing foot pain. And, I also wanted a pair that would protect his feet from electrical hazards and water. After hours of searching on the internet, I found five promising pairs.

Hi, I'm Stacy Smith, and today I'm going to tell you everything about finding the best work boots for HVAC. So, let's check them out!

Top 5 Work Boots For HVAC Reviews

1. Cat Footwear P89135 Men’s Second Shift Steel Toe Work Boot

Cat Footwear P89135 Men’s Second Shift Steel Toe Work Boot

Cat Footwear has been the number one choice of different professionals who prefer to get quality work boots at an affordable price. The brand has also been able to mix style with optimal protection, which is quite different from the dull boots usually available on the market.

Product Highlights

This is one of the first work boots that caught my eyes mainly due to its rugged style. The 100% oiled full-grain or nubuck leather upper used in the boot is thick enough to protect your feet from abrasion.

What I liked the most about this work boot was the T3 rubber outsole. It's able to deliver appropriate slip resistance even on surfaces with poor traction, all because of the thoughtful tread design. In addition, the 1.25 inch heel provides your feet with proper arch support to keep them free from fatigue even after an entire day at work.

Another thing I appreciate about this boot is the steel toe which meets the ASTM standards to protect from compression. And to seal the deal, this boot comes with electrical hazard protection of up to 600 volts.

What's There To Like About It?

There is a lot to like about these boots, but I especially appreciate Cat Footwear for adding the Climasphere breathable insole as it helps keep your feet comfortable. The nylon mesh lining in the boots enhances breathability and keeps your feet sweat-free throughout the work day. My son liked the extra padding on the ankle, which prevents chafing, especially when you have to move around a lot.

It’s also available in various sizes and widths, so you're likely to find a well-fitted pair of boots for yourself.

What's There Not To Like About It?

While going through the reviews for this work boot, I noticed that some people have complained about them initially smelling odd. This is mainly due to the upper leather, but you can quickly get rid of the smell by stuffing the boots with socks filled with baking soda.

Pros and Cons of Cat Footwear P89135 Men’s Second Shift Steel Toe Work Boot

Pros

  • Made of 100% leather
  • Comfortable heel height
  • Outsoles are flexible
  • Good grip on low traction surfaces

Cons

  • Complaints about smell

2. EVER BOOTS EB611TAN Tank Men's Soft Toe Work Boots

EVER BOOTS EB611TAN Tank Men's Soft Toe Work Boots

Looking for a pair of comfortable and lightweight work boots? If yes, then you may like the Tank boots from EVER BOOTS that can keep your feet free from soreness. The all-day comfort design is perfect for those working in the HVAC maintenance industry.

Product Highlights

With this pair, you get much more than what you may expect, looking at its price point. One of the first features that stood out to me was that you could swap out the insoles for prescribed orthotics. The PU insoles present in the boots are ultra-comfortable and don't let your feet get tired even when you work for long shifts.

However, the best part of this pair of boots is the thick rubber outsoles stitched to the upper for better durability. And, its wide-gripped design adds stability, while the deep grooves ensure flexibility of movement even when standing on a rough terrain.

My son especially preferred the nubuck uppers of this pair as the material isn't restrictive. In addition, this boot comes with a padded collar to support the ankles, which is excellent for those with a history of ankle injuries.

What's There To Like About It?

Right out of the box, I liked the simple design of this work boot. The nubuck uppers maintain the initial look even after months of use.

My son commented that it takes less time to tie the laces of these boots compared to others. He especially prefers the long, tough laces, which allow him to tie double knots to achieve a comfortable and secure fit.

What's There Not To Like About It?

I had to place this pair in the second position as it lacks the steel toe included in the Cat Footwear P89135 Men's Second Shift steel toe work boot. Hence, the boot won't be able to provide a similar amount of protection against compression affecting the toes.

Pros and Cons of EVER BOOTS EB611TAN Tank Men's Soft Toe Work Boots

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Enhanced maneuverability
  • Removable insoles
  • Easy to wear

Cons

  • Lack steel toes

3. Timberland PRO TB033046214 Men's Pit Boss Soft Toe Work Boot

Timberland PRO TB033046214 Men's Pit Boss Soft Toe Work Boot

Do you prefer the look and feel of traditional work boots? This pair of Timberland PRO work boots stand up to the excellence of the brand in providing the optimal performance needed for a long day of work on the site.

Product Highlights

To begin with, this pair was recommended by my friend, who has years of experience working in HVAC maintenance. He loves the PRO 24/7 Comfort Suspension technology as it manages to give his feet the much-needed comfort even on rigorous work days. Apart from cushioning the feet, the boot is also designed to have proper arch support that helps avoid foot injuries.

Furthermore, this boot is perfect for HVAC workers, as it meets the ANSI safety standards. Thanks to the rugged outsole with traction grip, the boot also provides resistance against slip, oil, and abrasion. Timberland PRO has even added a nylon shock-diffusion plate to provide extra stability to your feet by countering shock and impacts.

Compared to typical work boots, the roomier toe box of this model gives your feet a bit more wiggle space to keep them free from pain.

What's There To Like About It?

There's no doubt that the Timberland PRO craftsmanship is evident in this pair which adds to its comfort and durability. Like most other Timberland PRO boots, this one is also waterproof, so your feet will remain dry even when working in damp areas or when it's raining.

I appreciate the brand for using Goodyear Welt Construction to attach the upper and the outsole as it allows a durable mechanical bond, reducing the chance of sole separation.

What's There Not To Like About It?

I placed this boot in the third position after the EVER BOOTS EB611TAN Tank Men's soft toe work boots because some people have complained about the insoles. There's no need to worry, as you can swap them for other insoles, or contact customer care for a replacement on receiving a damaged pair.

Pros and Cons of Timberland PRO TB033046214 Men's Pit Boss Soft Toe Work Boot

Pros

  • Well-cushioned
  • Roomy toe box
  • Performs well on wet or slippery surfaces
  • Durable build quality

Cons

  • Complaints about insoles
Timberland PRO Men's Pit Boss 6 Inch Soft Toe Industrial Work Boot, Brown, 9.5
  • Rugged nubuck leather
  • Padded top collar for comfort
  • Electrical hazard protection

4. Carhartt Men's CMF6366 Composite Toe Boot

Carhartt Men's CMF6366 Composite Toe Boot

Carhartt is a pioneer in the work boots industry that has been taking care of fit and comfort since 1889. Like other boots from the brand, this pair is known for its exceptional durability and flexible comfort that will keep your feet free from pain.

Product Highlights

Even at a relatively budget price, Carhartt has provided this pair of work boots with premium quality, which is evident from its rugged design. I especially like the composite safety toe that isn't as restrictive as the metal toes. However, it can protect your feet from impact and compression hazards similar to metal toes.

This boot also has enhanced safety, as the composite toe can keep you safe from an electrical hazard of up to 18,000 volts or less under dry conditions. In addition, this pair is designed according to the ASTM F2413-18 EH standards to keep your feet safe in all kinds of hazardous situations.

Carhartt has also added abrasion-resistant heel bumpers to make the boots suitable for extra-long wear, which is beneficial for those who need to stand for hours.

What's There To Like About It?

The first thing I would like to mention is the FastDry lining present inside the boot. This mesh layer compliments the full-grain leather uppers to increase the breathability of your feet and keep them sweat-free.

Other highlights would be the dual-density footbed with OrthoLite top layer and the Strobel cushioning that keeps your feet comfortable even on a long work day. I also liked the polyurethane layers placed under the insole as they maximize flexibility while maintaining the benefits of cushioning.

What's There Not To Like About It?

Even though the comfort is comparable to the Timberland PRO TB033046214 Men's Pit Boss soft toe work boot, I have placed it in the fourth position due to the low quality of laces. I feel that the laces provided with the boots are relatively thin and may not last beyond a year.

Pros and Cons of Carhartt Men's CMF6366 Composite Toe Boot

Pros

  • Abrasion-resistant design
  • Excellent sweat control
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable boot opening

Cons

  • Laces aren’t the best
Carhartt Men's 6 Inch Rugged Flex Composite Toe Boot,Brown Oil Tanned,10.5 M US
  • Composite Safety Toe. Identifies protection against impact and compression hazards with a composite (non-metallic) safety toe. Composite toes meet ASTM F2413-24 standards.
  • Electrical Hazard (Safety Toe). Identifies secondary protection against incidental contact with electrical circuits of 18,000 volts or less under dry conditions. Safety Toe EH styles meet ASTM F2413-24 EH standards.
  • FastDry Technology Lining. FastDry lining wicks away sweat for comfort.

5. Red Wing Men's Iron Ranger Boot

Red Wing Men's Iron Ranger Boot

Last but not least, I have the Iron Ranger boot from Red Wing, a cult favorite of many professionals. It comes with the much-loved non-marking, oil-resistant sole, which is seldomly seen in other work boots. So, let's check it out!

Product Highlights

Let me tell you, these aren't boots that you'll hide in the garage after a long day of work. Each pair is handcrafted from premium leather with detailed contrast stitching as well as high polish hooks and eyelets to provide a cohesive look. So, you can wear the boots to a social event, and you're bound to get compliments.

A unique feature of this boot is the use of a Nitrile Cork outsole that provides better resistance against abrasion and slipping even on rugged or tricky terrains. And, as the soles lack the usual tread, nothing will stick to them, be it snow, oil, or water.

The bump toe in this boot is roomier than the composite and steel toes, giving wiggle space to your toes. In addition, a double-layer leather toe cap ensures that your feet will remain protected from impact and compression.

What's There To Like About It?

One of the things my son loves about this boot is the ease of maintenance. You just need to lightly scrub it with warm water and a soft-bristled brush to get rid of any dirt. Similarly, as it's made of natural leather, any scuff that appears can be buffed out using a soft dry cloth.

This work boot is available in various colors and finishes, so you can easily get a pair matching your style.

What's There Not To Like About It?

The only reason I have placed this pair of boots below the Carhartt Men's CMF6366 composite toe boot is its expensive price. However, this isn't really a drawback, as this boot is completely handcrafted, making it more comfortable and durable than other commonly found work boots.

Pros and Cons of Red Wing Men's Iron Ranger Boot

Pros

  • Easy cleaning
  • High-quality leather upper
  • Roomy toe space
  • Comfortable heel

Cons

  • Expensive
Red Wing Heritage Iron Ranger 6" Boot,Amber Harness,10.5 D(M) US
  • The product is natural leather and its easy for scuffs to happen but they rub out. This can be removed by a soft dry cloth and lightly buffed out the scuffs. The shoe has a steel shank
  • Fit Recommendation - Many customers size down ½ to 1 full size.
  • Features a bump toe for more room up-front. Double layer leather toe cap and leather heel pocket

Buyers Guide

Are you still a bit confused about how to pick the best work boots for HVAC work? Don't worry, as I have gathered some essential points that will help you pick a comfortable and protective pair for yourself. So, let's check them out!

1. Material

One of the major reasons behind a pair of work boots not lasting as per expectations is the presence of inferior materials. When you invest in high-quality boots like composite toe work boots, they are usually made of materials like leather and rubber, which last for a long time.

On top of that, work boots made of quality materials can keep your feet protected from hazardous materials that might be present on the site. That's why in to be careful in HVAC sites, the workers are recommended to wear boots made of non-conductive materials like leather and rubber. I also like shoes that come with puncture resistance as they provide an added layer of protection.

2. Fit and Comfort

Similar to picking any other pair of shoes, you need to make sure that your work boots have a comfortable fit. As you will be on your feet for hours, it's best to avoid shoes that are too tight as they may cause foot pain. Instead, pick shoes with a roomier design that take pressure off your fit.

Another key aspect of comfort is the padding provided inside the boots. While you may not require extreme padding, some of it does help to get boots a better fit. High-top boots with ankle padding are recommended to provide better protection and support. Some brands add extra padding to the midsoles to protect your feet from sudden shocks or jerks.

3. Outsoles

Arguably, the most critical part of your work boots is the outsoles which ensure the utmost protection of your feet. The most common materials for outsoles are rubber and thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), as both provide excellent grip and traction. However, you should pay attention to the tread design and the outsole lugs to ensure slip resistance and improved traction on different terrains.

I recommend looking for work boots that meet ANSI safety standards and ASTM specifications to be sure about protection against electrical hazards, chemicals, and oil. Some HVAC professionals also prefer work boots with mark-resistant outsoles designed to leave no black scuff marks on floors, a thing your clients will surely appreciate.

4. Waterproofing

While picking boots for HVAC work, you should check if they have proper waterproofing. Many shoes may claim to be water-resistant, but that won't keep your feet protected from water for a prolonged time. As most composite toe work boots have a leather upper, make sure to purchase only those pairs that specifically mention the presence of being waterproof.

Along with letting your work in different weather conditions, waterproof boots ensure that your feet are protected from moisture-caused complications. And, boots with additional waterproof membranes also keep your feet dry throughout the work day when working on outside HVAC units.

5. Added Features

Apart from the usual components, you may check the boots for extra features that ensure better protection of your feet. One of them is the presence of welt construction, where a rubber or leather strip is attached to the upper and outsole. This feature adds an enhanced hard-wearing construction to the boots, making them useful for heavy use. It also allows for better sole replacement and reparability than direct-attach construction.

Another feature that I really appreciate is the presence of a breathable nylon liner on the inside of the boots. They keep your feet dry in all weather conditions, making them comfortable and free from fatigue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How long do work boots for HVAC last?

To be honest, the lasting capacity of work boots depends on several aspects such as quality, frequency of use, and maintenance. On an average, a pair of high-quality work boots should last about six to twelve months. In contrast, cheap work boots may start to tear and peel in just a month.

To make your work boots last long, you need to take care of them, especially if the pair is made of leather. It's recommended to clean the boots after a workday to limit the buildup of mud and dirt. Occasionally, you should also clean the boots with leather soap and apply a conditioner to make them last longer.

Q2. How to judge the quality of work boots for HVAC?

There are many ways you can judge the quality of work boots. First of all, whenever you're looking at a product, make sure to go through the customer reviews. They will usually give you a hint about whether the pair would work according to your expectations.

Besides, you should also pay attention to the overall quality of the work boot. I like to pay close attention to the outsoles to ensure that it's durable and resistant to splitting. You should also inspect how the outsole has been attached to the upper to check if the boots can sustain heavy-duty usage.

Q3. Why do you need to wear proper work boots while working on HVAC units?

While you may find it comfortable to work on your HVAC unit for a day wearing a pair of sneakers, the same can't be said for professionals. HVAC maintenance workers need to stand for hours at an end which can easily make the feet sore on wearing the wrong footwear.

Throughout the workday, they may need to lift heavy things and walk through narrow passages, so a pair of protective work boots prevent injuries to the foot. Work boots made for HVAC work also often come with electrical-hazard resistance to keep a person safe from electrocution on coming in contact with loose wires.

My Final Recommendation

Before I tell you my favorites, I would like you to note that the best work boots for HVAC may vary based on the preference of styles. So, I suggest trying on a few pairs of boots until you find the one that provides equal comfort and protection.

My son has been pleased with the Cat Footwear P89135 Men's Second Shift steel toe work boots, as they keep his feet fatigue-free and dry during heavy work hours.

Otherwise, he also prefers the EVER BOOTS EB611TAN Tank Men's soft toe work boots on days that require a lot of walking, thanks to the enhanced maneuverability provided by the outsoles. It’s also highly recommended to those who use prescribed insoles.

Until next time!
