How To Make A Rockery Garden

Are you thinking of adding an interesting element to your lawn? If you’re considering building a rockery garden, here’s a simple guide to help you.

I consider myself an avid gardener; however, I have spent most of my life dabbling in flowers, shrubs, and vegetables. Although I had heard about Rockery Gardens earlier, I didn’t ever get around to building one until recently.

I spoke to my husband about the same, and he showed his excitement about adding the new element to our garden.

Fortunately, we had most of the material required to build one. Now, it was just a matter of getting to work and slowly building it. I must admit, we thoroughly enjoyed the process, and the result was magnificent.

Hi! I’m Stacy, and in today’s guide, I will tell you all about how to make a rockery garden. Believe me; it’s a straightforward process that adds a touch of elegance to any garden. Moreover, it’s fun to make and doesn’t require much maintenance.

What Is A Rockery Garden?

Before delving into the detailed process of making one, I thought it’s best to begin by describing what a rockery garden is.

For those who don’t know, a rockery garden is a small (or large) arrangement of various rocks and pebbles arranged strategically to look aesthetic. It is also known as an alpine garden, as the space is used primarily to grow alpine plants.

As you may already know, alpine plants thrive in mountainous regions. So, if you are interested in growing these plants in your garden, it is essential to have a suitable collection of rocks to help them thrive.

The best part about a rockery garden is that you can make them as large or as small as you need. Furthermore, these gardens are known to naturally change over time, enhancing their natural look and appeal.

A vital factor to keep in mind is that alpine plants require adequate drainage and sunlight to thrive. While it is possible to make a rockery garden in shaded areas, these structures survive best in places where they receive ample sunlight.

Steps To Make A Rockery Garden

A rockery garden can be extremely detailed or minimalistic - it all depends on your preference and the look you wish to achieve. Those who want to build a super realistic rock structure might need to procure suitable rocks or build a faux river bed.

That being said, these elements are entirely preferential, and you don’t need to invest a considerable amount to create a beautiful rockery garden on your property. I opted for a minimalistic structure that I could slowly build around, so that is what I will talk about in this guide.

Step 1 - Finding The Right Location

As I mentioned earlier, it is imperative to find a suitable location for your rockery garden. In my case, my husband and I chose a particularly sunny spot in our yard that would look fantastic with this new addition.

I recommend choosing a spot that receives ample sunlight throughout the day and is not covered by trees or other structures.

Step 2 - Adding The First Course

Before you begin choosing the rocks and building the structure, I recommend clearing the area of all plants and weeds. Ensure that you dig up the soil and remove any roots so that plants don’t crop up at a later stage.

Create a base by laying out rocks in a circular structure. This is the structure around which you will build the rockery garden.

Now, you need to choose the right soil to add to this layer. Opt for sandy soil or rubble, which provides good drainage. If you have clayey soil, add compost and sand to make it dry and to promote drainage.

Step 3 - Adding The Second Course

This is the fun part - adding the stones and rocks for the second layer. Ideally, you should use the largest, heaviest rocks to create the perimeter. This leaves you with slightly smaller rocks to build the second course.

As you did with the first course, start building a smaller circle around the base. Add the heaviest and largest rocks at the bottom, and smaller ones at the top, building a mountain-like structure. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try different shapes and structures.

Step 4 - Adding Compost

You may choose to buy compost or make it yourself. My husband and I already had the raw materials required, so we decided to make our own compost consisting of horticultural grit, weed-free topsoil, and leaf mould. We added this next layer to the rocks, filling all the small pockets and building the plant bed.

Step 5 - Choosing The Right Plants

One might argue that this is one of the most vital steps to building an aesthetic rockery garden. I recommend opting for drought-loving plants that thrive in well-draining soils and ample sunlight.

Moreover, we decided to color-coordinate our plants with the rock structures. So, if you create a rock garden that is primarily based on red sandstone, adding plant varieties that have slight red in them could complement it well.

Of course, you can choose the color scheme according to various other factors, like the rest of your garden décor. Plant your rock garden carefully, and add decorative rocks at the end of it for aesthetic effect.

Summing It Up

We built our rock garden somewhere around late winter, and by early summer, the plants were in full bloom and looked incredible.

Keep in mind that the rock structures may move or change slightly over time, so allow it to happen naturally. Moreover, you should not heavily water the plants but may follow a watering schedule according to the plants’ needs.

Add smaller rocks and pebbles as you plant to create a natural appeal. Let me know how your rock garden turned out by commenting below or attaching pictures of it.

Stay safe!
