I read plenty of articles and went through gardening forums extensively before I realized that "winter overseeding" is a legitimate process. If you have spent any time reading about overseeding, you may have come across varying advice. While some tell you to overseed your lawn during the fall, others say the best time is late summer.
However, not many people know that winter overseeding is tremendously advantageous and successful.
So what exactly is winter overseeding? Well, it is the process of overseeding your lawn during the winter season. Although you may think winter isn't an appropriate season for it, there are several grass varieties that germinate and thrive in winter if you take the right steps.
Of course, there are several additional steps you may have to take. You need to be cautious when winter overseeding as the soil tends to get dry and crack. However, this can also be advantageous.
Once the frozen soil thaws and cracks, it introduces more air into it. This is good for soil health. Furthermore, the new seeds have a chance to bury deeper into the top layer of the soil and take advantage of the newly aerated soil.

That being said, some states may make an exception for new seedlings, so ensure that you check with the local authorities before choosing the right fertilizer.
