Lawn mower tires can get damaged over time with repeated use or even when they face significant opposition in the yard. Whatever the case, you’ll have to remove the tire in order to get it repaired.
The trouble is, lawn mower tires are usually highly pressurized and rather tight. That’s why, for people without significant experience, breaking the bead on a lawn mower tire can become problematic.
Thankfully, there are multiple methods of accomplishing the task. In the following sections, I will take you through the different methods that you can follow to break a lawn mower tire bead.
Methods To Break The Bead On A Lawn Mower Tire
There are a total of five methods that you can lean on when trying to break the bead on a lawn mower tire. The first step is common for every option: you first have to deflate the tire and remove it from the mower.
To do that, you need to lift the mower using a scissor jack. Then you’d need to remove the bolts holding the tire. Smaller lawn mower models usually have a single bolt, while riding lawn mowers can have up to four bolts holding the tire. Use a socket wrench to remove these bolts and take out the tire.
Next, remove the valve cap on the tire rim, and let the air out of the tire. You can also use a valve removal tool for this purpose. Deflating the tire will make the task of breaking the bead easier and less time-consuming.
Now, let’s take a look at five different methods of breaking the bead.
1. Using Your Bodyweight
This is the simplest method of breaking the bead. First, you need to place the wheel on a flat surface. Then, put one foot on either side of the rim and press down; the rim should come off without much trouble. In case you don’t have any tools available and need to get the job done at once, this method is the best solution.
2. Using A Wooden Board And Car
If you find it hard to break the bead with your body weight, then the following method can come in handy. Here, you need to place the wheel on a smooth, even, and hard surface. Then, take a wooden board and put it on the wheel’s edge without touching the rim. The wooden board essentially acts as a lever here.
Next, get in your car and drive over the board carefully. Repeat the method on the opposite side as well, and the tire should come off quickly. This method is handy for tires that are badly stuck due to debris and rust.
3. Using A Pry Bar Or Screwdriver
For trying out this method, you’ll need to place the tire on a flat surface (as usual), put one foot on the tire, and set the pry bar or screwdriver into the point where the rim and rubber connect. Then, give the tire a firm beating along the rim’s circumference, insert the tool between the rim and rubber, and give it a gentle pry. The tire should come off quickly.
4. Using A Scissor Jack
You can also use a scissor jack to break the bead on a lawn mower tire. Along with the jack, you’d also need a wooden board and a power drill for this method. First, place the tire on a wooden board and position the jack under the board.
Then, raise the tire to contact any hard surface and push the bead open. For this purpose, you can use the back frame of the mower. If you find trouble raising the jack manually, use the power drill to get better results.
5. Using A Bead Breaker Tool
The simplest way to break the bead is to use a bead breaker tool. Professionals usually use these tools, but if you have one, I recommend getting the job done with it. For this purpose, you’ll need to strap in the rim and tire using ropes and clamp them using a scissor jack.
Next, tighten the ropes using the jack, and apply the bead breaker tool on the tire rim. These tools usually have a vibrating head that gets the tire separated from the rim easily. Also, this method has the least chance of damaging the rim or tire.
