This unit weighs only 35 pounds; moreover, its integrated wheels make portability a breeze. It is one of the most versatile units on the market. Not only does it come with an excellent, energy-efficient air conditioner, but it also has the added functionality of a dehumidifier, heater, and fan.

Its energy-efficient system helps you save on energy costs and provides optimal performance during any season. The unit efficiently cools and heats a 350 square foot space within just a few minutes.

What's There To Like About It?

I appreciate the efforts by the manufacturer to make this unit as user-friendly and portable as possible. The addition of the smooth castor wheels and an integrated handle makes it super easy for me to roll the unit in and out of the garage.

Furthermore, it comes with a handy remote control that makes controlling the unit very convenient. The top-mounted LED display is crystal clear and easy to read from a distance.

What's There Not To Like About It?

Honestly, I didn't come across anything that I particularly disliked about this portable air conditioner. However, the tank needs to be drained when it is close to being full - which can be a little annoying at times. Fortunately, there is a little light indicator that tells me when the tank is almost full.

2. SereneLife SLPAC12.5

SereneLife SLPAC12.5

Moving on to my next recommendation, allow me to introduce you to the SereneLife SLPAC12.5 portable electric air conditioner. Its sleek and compact design is ideal for small spaces like garages. Plus, its integrated rolling wheels make portability extremely convenient. Those looking for a money-saving, energy-efficient option will appreciate this unit.

Product Highlights

A vital feature to know about this unit is that it comes with a cooler, heater, dehumidifier, and purifier. It efficiently removes most kinds of allergens, mold, mildew, mites, pollutants, and contaminants from the garage (or any other room). This particular feature makes it an ideal addition to the garage since there is quite a bit of fume and contaminants in the small space.

The unit comes with 12,000 BTU of cooling power and efficiently removes 1.8L of moisture per hour. It ensures that the garage remains a safe and comfortable working environment for hours.

Of course, it's natural to be concerned about the energy costs when using a powerful unit like this one. After using the air conditioner for a couple of months, I noticed a drastic change in the energy bills - they reduced dramatically! This is primarily due to the energy-efficient system and quick cooling capacity.

What's There To Like About It?

Most air conditioners create quite a bit of ruckus during operation, especially if I use the fan and cooling mode. However, I noticed that this unit was particularly quiet during operation. Its low-noise motor and convenient remote control made controlling and operating it a breeze.

I also love the automatic swing mode and moving wind vent that ensures maximum air circulation, preventing the room from becoming stuffy and suffocating.

What's There Not To Like About It?

I scoured the website and owner's manual to look for warranty information; however, I found nothing mentioned anywhere. This was slightly distressing, and I tried contacting customer service to find out more. Sadly, I hit a dead-end, as the customer service representative did not have substantial information for me either.

Whynter ARC-14S

It's time to move on to my next recommendation - the Whynter ARC-14S. Weighing 80 pounds, this portable air conditioner unit features a system with fantastic air flow efficiency of 253 cubic feet p/m. Furthermore, its black and platinum color combination looks super aesthetic and classy in any room. Read on to find out more about it.

Product Highlights

When sifting through home renovation magazines that my husband showed me, I came across an article about this particular unit that intrigued me. I noticed that this portable unit won the Good Housekeeping award for the "2020 Best Overall" unit. The article mentioned that it could efficiently cool down any space faster than most other portable air conditioner units on the market.

Intrigued, I decided to test these claims. Well, this 80-pound unit has a 14,000 BTU cooling capacity. However, it draws only about 1300 Watts, which is relatively low. Not just that, it uses a special eco-friendly R-32 refrigerant that is entirely CFC-free. This makes it an ideal choice for users who are environmentally conscious and are looking for green units.

This model is UL listed, which makes it even more reliable and trustworthy. Not just that, it won the highest score on the Consumer Reports 2020, which goes to show how popular the product is.

What's There To Like About It?

First off, I love how sleek and elegant this unit looks in my garage. Although compact, it efficiently cools a space up to 500 square feet, which is pretty fantastic. Moreover, it comes with an eco-friendly refrigerant and does not consume excessive power, making it an ideal option for most homes.

Users will also appreciate the durable wheels that enable easy portability from one room to another.

What's There Not To Like About It?

Unlike my other recommendations, this unit does not come with a remote control. As such, I need to walk up to it to turn it on or off or change the settings. Although this isn't a dealbreaker for me, I admit that it can get inconvenient at times, especially when I am in the midst of some important task.

4. COSTWAY 23048-CYPE-CCSS

COSTWAY 23048-CYPE-CCSS

If you're looking for a compact, portable unit ideal for smaller spaces up to 230 square feet, consider the COSTWAY 23048-CYPE-CCSS. It features a large LED display with easy controls and several modes to choose from. Moreover, the added remote control lets you conveniently switch between modes and settings without walking up to the unit.

Product Highlights

The next product I want to talk about is relatively straightforward in its features and use. It has been designed for smaller spaces and is ideal for my garage. The unit features multiple function modes and two fan speeds. It also comes with several additional features like a dehumidifier, intelligent timer, water level indicator, and temperature sensor.

The 24-hour programmable timer feature is very reliable. It is excellent for careful users who don't want to overuse the machine or ring up high energy bills.

Not just that, the temperature sensor feature is an added benefit that helps you save energy and money. This feature senses the ambient temperature and automatically adjusts its temperature or switches off to keep the current temperature intact. This helps prevent wastage and save on inflated energy costs.

Finally, the water level indicator alerts you about the water levels in the tank. It prevents accidents, ensuring that your floor or carpets do not get wet - causing a bigger mess for you to clean later.

What's There To Like About It?

The remote control has an excellent range, allowing me to operate it from quite a distance without hassle. I particularly love the large, easy-to-read controls on both the remote as well as the LED display panel on the unit.

I also want to talk about the large caster wheels and an integrated handle that enable easy transportation. Finally, its compact design is ideal for those looking for a smaller unit for small spaces.

What's There Not To Like About It?

My only caveat with this unit was the fact that it can get a little loud. That being said, I should mention that the noise is most noticeable in a quiet environment, so it should not be an issue for those who plan on using the air conditioner in the garage (where it is relatively noisy).

Pros and Cons of COSTWAY 23048-CYPE-CCSS

Pros

  • Continuous drain system
  • Convenient mobility
  • 24-hour timer feature

  • 2 Ways to Control: Considering your convenience, this portable air conditioner can be controlled by the intelligent touch panel or the handy remote control. Both of them have the 24-hour timer button so that you are able to set the time in advance. Besides, the ℃/℉ button on the remote control can achieve the conversion of Celsius degree and Fahrenheit degree.

Looking for a low-maintenance portable air conditioner that you can use in a room without windows? Take a look at the COMFYHOME NDY-DL2 portable air conditioner. This compact unit features a large panel that offers ultimate comfort when cooling any space. Furthermore, its humanized water tank design makes it an ideal unit for most users.

Product Highlights

For starters, I want to talk about the humanized water tank design on this unit. The top water design has been developed specifically for users with back problems, elderly users, and pregnant women. Its strategic design ensures that you don't need to bend forward to refill the water tank - giving your back much-needed rest.

Using the cooling feature is very straightforward and convenient. Pack the water tank with ice cubes or ice packs and click on the "Cool" button. This will instantly provide you with a cool, gentle breeze that feels super comfortable.

Moving on, the smart sleep mode is one of the best features of this unit. This feature alternates between temperatures and fan modes to optimize your comfort while you sleep. Of course, you can use this mode even when you aren't sleeping. It helps save energy costs while providing an ideal climate for you to sleep or work in.

What's There To Like About It?

Users will appreciate the large, adjustable louvers at the front of the unit. You can manually adjust these louvers for optimal comfort and cooling or opt for the remote control settings that offer 65° wide oscillation. This feature is excellent for air circulation and also helps cool the entire room evenly.

Furthermore, the air filters efficiently trap dust particles, allergens, and other contaminants, ensuring that you have a safe, healthy breathing environment.

What's There Not To Like About It?

The only issue I noticed with this air conditioner unit was the 12-hour timer. As such, I always look for 24-hour timers as they are more convenient in the long term. That being said, the other excellent features of this unit make up for this minor flaw.

Pros and Cons of COMFYHOME NDY-DL2

Buyers Guide

That brings me to the end of my top 5 portable air conditioners for garage recommendations. If you have already picked the most suitable one for your requirements, superb!

But for those who still haven't made a choice, don't worry. I have curated a short but informative buyer's guide that can help you make the right choice.

Picking the best product out of so many options can be overwhelming. Believe me, I know - I went through the same process! Fortunately, I noted down a couple of vital factors that I considered when looking for the best product for my garage. Today, I will share that list with you.

So, let's begin!

1. Size Of The Unit

Many people wish to purchase a portable air conditioner because of its compact size and other user-friendly features. However, when I was looking for one, I was insistent on finding a truly portable model.

I considered the size of the unit, its weight, and whether it had wheels and an integrated handle. This made portability so much easier, as I wasn't planning on keeping my unit in the garage permanently.

So, if portability is a vital factor for you, make sure that you check the size and weight of the unit. More importantly, check whether you are able to move it around comfortably or not.

2. The Size Of The Room

A portable air conditioner is not designed to cool an entire room. These compact units are meant for cooling small spaces like garages, attics, storerooms, etc. Most manufacturers use the term "BTU" to measure thermal energy. BTU stands for British Thermal Unit.

While most people think that high BTUs mean a more efficient unit, this isn't entirely true. In fact, a high BTU unit may cool a room faster, but it can also overload the compressor.

So, what should you consider in a portable air conditioner? Well, it is best to measure the size of the room you want to cool and look up the appropriate BTUs required to cool the room. As such, a 150 square foot room requires an air conditioner with a minimum of 5,000 BTUs, while a 1,000 square foot room requires one with at least 18,000 BTUs.

3. Noise Levels

Rarely do customers look for an air conditioner that sounds like a miniature jet plane when it operates. Well, keeping the noise levels down in the garage was an important consideration for me. So, when looking for a suitable unit, I made it a point to check the operating noise level of each unit.

Of course, it is best not to trust the manufacturer's claims on this blindly. I also went through several customer reviews and feedback, which helped me shortlist my product recommendations. I advise you to do the same when looking for a suitable unit for your garage.

4. Auto-Drain System

Personally, the auto-drain system feature was quite important for me, as I did not want to constantly bend down to empty the unit when it was filled with condensation. However, you may notice that I have added a unit to my recommendations that did not come with the auto-drain system.

In my opinion, while this system is quite essential, its absence is not a dealbreaker. However, if you are specifically looking for a user-friendly unit that does not require you to drain it frequently, I recommend considering the other two options on my list.

5. Remote Control

Is it really necessary for a portable air conditioner to have a remote control? Well, the same logic applies to having a remote control for a television. It's not compulsory, but it helps!

Again, you may notice that I have added a unit to my list that does not come with a remote control feature. The reason remains the same - because the other features of the unit were excellent and made up for the absence of the remote control.

However, if you plan on spending long hours in the garage with your hands tied with work, a remote controlled portable air conditioner may be the ideal option for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have decided to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about portable air conditioners in this section. Read on to find out more.

1. Do Portable Air Conditioners Have Energy Star Ratings?

Single-hose portable air conditioners do not come with energy star ratings because they are not energy efficient. Until a short while ago, even dual-hose air conditioners did not have an energy rating. However, the new units are designed to be energy efficient, so check the EER before purchasing.

2. Do All Portable Air Conditioners Need To Be Vented?

Generally speaking - yes. All portable air conditioners need to be vented outside a window. Fortunately, many of these units come with a window kit that makes it easier to do so.

3. Should You Run A Portable Air Conditioner All Day?

It is not cost or energy-efficient to run any air conditioner all day, no matter how energy-efficient it is.

My Final Recommendation

That brings me to the end of my guide.

Before I sign off, I want to take a minute to talk about my favorite products. Overall, the BLACK+DECKER Portable Air Conditioner BPACT14HWT is one of my favorite units because of how lightweight, portable, and user-friendly it is. That said, it does not come with a self-draining system, which is slightly annoying.

Next, I also liked the Whynter ARC-14S because of its elegant design and ability to cool a 500 square foot room. Again, the remote control was missing from this unit, so consider that before purchasing it.

Let me know if you agree with my verdict by leaving a comment below. On that note, it’s time for me to sign off.

Ciao!
