Best Pull Down Attic Stairs

If you stay in a ranch house or a Victorian building, there’s a good chance of an attic space being available for storage. But do you really use it?

While most such houses offer extra space to store away all the clutter, there is usually a small hole in the ceiling leading you to the attic. And if you do not have a ladder to access it, then the space will remain untapped.

However, I have had my share of fair issues with the traditional ladders, and I was not very confident about using them anymore.

And that’s when my husband told me all about the pull down attic stairs, which is a safer alternative. These units are steady and compact, occupying less space in the house. Plus, they can be attached to the ceiling and can be lowered anytime when needed.

Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and without further ado, I am going to take you through my guide about the best pull down attic stairs available today.

So, dive in!

Top 5 Pull Down Attic Stairs Reviews

1. Louisville Ladder AA2210 Elite

Louisville Ladder AA2210 Elite

If you are looking for a sturdy option that can hold a lot of weight, then the Louisville Ladder AA2210 Elite will serve well. After my husband gained extra pounds over winter, I needed to purchase a new ladder, and it served my purpose really well.

Product Highlights

Thanks to the adjustable mechanism of this ladder, you can change its height between 7 feet, 8 inches, and 10 feet and 3 inches. Moreover, the step depth is 3.25 inches, while the size of its rails are 3.125 inches. I feel that this combination is comfortable for people of all ages to use, and the sturdiness will give you complete confidence about not tipping over.

Moving on to the weight capacity, it can handle weight up to 375 pounds and the grooved step design is reinforced to ensure traction. Furthermore, this unit is equipped with strong hinges that account for seamless unfolding. At the same time, they keep the ladder from wobbling while you are on it.

I also loved how easy it is to adjust the spring tension, especially for achieving wide clearance when required. Besides, installing this ladder won’t strain your nerves and you should not take more than a few hours to do it.

What’s There To Like About It?

I am very skeptical about getting up on ladders as I always fear that I would slip. But thanks to the slip-resistant steps, I could take a step ahead in overcoming this fear.

It provides quite easy access to the attic without burning a hole in your pocket. Moreover, the sleek design does not take up too much space, and storing it away wouldn’t be a problem. Since I often clean late at night, the quiet unfolding system keeps my husband from waking up.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

I found that the packet of screws provided with the pack was already open, and some screws were missing. As a result, I had to purchase separate screws to finish the installation process. Now, this won’t be a drawback if you already have spare screws, but the brand should take this into consideration.

Pros and Cons of Louisville Ladder AA2210 Elite

Pros

  • Maximum weight capacity of up to 375 lbs
  • Slip-resistant steps
  • Adjustable height for different ceiling lengths

2. Telesteps 1800EP Ladder

Telesteps 1800EP Ladder

Equipped with the patented one-touch release, the Telesteps 1800EP Ladder is another great addition to this list. This is an automatic telescopic option that is well known for its innovative features. I have discussed all its brilliant features in the next section.

Product Highlights

For starters, this model is quite compact and can retract up to 2.8 feet, making it easy to store. But when required, it can give you a reach up to 18 feet. Hence, you can work with tall ceilings easily and it’s steady structure doesn’t need additional support.

On top of that, the 100% silicone feet provide much-needed stability on different surfaces. So, if you’re worried about placing it on slippery ground, rest assured that it will remain stable throughout.

I appreciate how the brand has put in quite a lot of effort to ensure maximum safety. Not only is the design OSHA compliant, but the unit is also EN131 and ANSI 14.2 tested for better peace of mind among users. So, there is no fear of falling off or slipping, and you can complete your work with full concentration.

What’s There To Like About It?

First of all, I loved the high-quality construction that makes the overall structure sleek and sturdy. In this regard, the brand has used aircraft-grade aluminum, and you will notice a clean surface with safety indicators.

Furthermore, my husband pointed out a great feature that I had initially overlooked. The silicone feet are adjustable, so you can position them depending on the floor. And no matter the placement, they will always remain stable and in place.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

It may be helpful to know that this ladder isn’t the most affordable option out there, so you may have to stretch your budget by quite a bit. Besides, I would have liked the brand to provide an extensive instructions manual, without which I had to spend more time looking for online tutorials.

  • Feet made of 100% silicone

3. FAKRO LWP 66809

FAKRO LWP 66809

I was looking for a well-insulated ladder that was easy to work with when I came across the FAKRO LWP 66809 attic ladder. I was very happy with the lowered energy costs after installing it in my house.

Product Highlights

If you are wondering how well it works for attics, then let me tell you about the insulated door frame made of wood, which is attached to the ladder to prevent the attic heat from escaping. This reduces energy costs while providing the perfect space for entering the attic. And owing to the smooth mechanism, you don’t need to apply too much force to open or close it.

Plus, the ladder can bear up to 300 pounds at a time, including the person and cargo that they are carrying. The sturdiness on offer gives me enough confidence to carry heavy bags and boxes while climbing it. Moreover, its wooden color looks good and will add to the wooden flooring in the house.

Last but not least, it fits attic openings that measure 30 x 54 inches and is very easy to install. I am not a pro at DIY installations, but I could easily attach it in about an hour with some help from my husband.

What’s There To Like About It?

The wood used in its construction is actually high-quality pine, and the unit is equipped with an opening mechanism that stands out from its peers. It’s a great alternative for expensive staircases, which may also take up a lot of space.

Apart from that, my husband pointed out that there were grooves made on each step, which prevents the user from slipping. They make for a steady footing, and you will be able to climb up and down quickly.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

While I was very happy with how the ladder functioned, there was no mounting hardware provided with the pack. I had to purchase them separately, which led to investing more time. But again, this is not a big drawback, and I will still recommend purchasing this. And you can buy the mounting hardware beforehand now that you know about the issue.

Pros and Cons of FAKRO LWP 66809

Pros

  • Efficient door mechanism traps attic heat
  • Adjustable height system
  • Backed by a 2-year warranty
  • Can take up to 300 pounds

Cons

  • Mounting hardware is not provided

4. Werner Ladder AA1510CA Al Attic

Werner Ladder AA1510CA Al Attic

One of my final recommendations is the Werner Ladder AA1510CA Al Attic, which is lightweight and easy to work with. It is perfect for houses where you have small openings leading to the attic and wouldn’t take up much floor space.

Product Highlights

First things first, this ladder measures 14 x 8.3 x 52.6 inches and can extend between 7 feet and 9 feet 10 inches.

Hence, it will fit most attics perfectly, and you can adjust the height as needed. It is also perfect for tight spaces and is very compact, which will come in handy during storage. But that does not stop it from being equipped with an assist pole on the side, which makes it more convenient for me to go up and down with adequate side-support.

It is entirely made of aluminum and is a very lightweight option, which makes it easy to open and close each time. The stairs weigh only 15.5 pounds, so I could install it all by myself without asking my husband to help. Plus, it has non-marring feet, and you will not be making ladder marks on the ground.

What’s There To Like About It?

Not only is this ladder perfect for attics, but it can also be used for closets and hallways when required. In fact, it’s versatility has made my friend Angie keep a spare one at her place just for emergencies! And because of its lightweight design, she can carry it around practically anywhere.

It was one of the first ladders that made me use my attic space to the fullest without worrying about stability and slipping.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

The only downside to this lightweight model is that it cannot take a lot of weight and has a maximum capacity of 250 pounds. Now, this means that it’s pretty suitable for most users, but if you have to carry cargo up and down, you may have to look for something else.

Pros and Cons of Werner Ladder AA1510CA Al Attic

Pros

  • 14 x 8.3 x 52.6 inches in size
  • Equipped with non-marring feet
  • Perfect for tight and closed spaces
  • Made of aluminum

Cons

  • Cannot take beyond 250 pounds

5. FAKRO LSF 66858

FAKRO LSF 66858

Up next is a model that is equipped with a fireproof metal door and is one of the safest options to choose. The AKRO LSF 66858 Attic Ladder is a brilliant choice to make for all those who are concerned about fire hazards and safety.

Product Highlights

This unit comprises a scissor attic ladder, which is fire-rated and well insulated to prevent any destruction in case of fire accidents. The opening on the top roughly measures 22 x 47-inch with a metal door that complements the ladder very well.

While the latter is made of steel, this closed metal door is insulated and made of fire-resistant material. It is known to resist fire for 60 minutes, giving you enough time to call firefighters in case of an unfortunate accident.

Plus, it shuts tightly and prevents heat loss during winters when room heating is switched on. This indirectly saves energy and brings down the energy bill to a great extent.

Otherwise, you would be losing a lot of hot air through the gaps on the sides of average doors. Here again, I didn't have to exert a lot of force to open and close the door, which is a major advantage at my age!

What’s There To Like About It?

Unlike my previous pick, this option has a weight capacity of 300 pounds, and that worked out very well for me. I was able to carry heavy items up and down without needing to worry about the ladder breaking down and collapsing.

Moreover, this model is backed by a 2-year warranty, and in case it malfunctions, you can always reach out to the customer care representatives for help.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

While it works out very well, remember that this is a heavy ladder that weighs around 138 pounds. So, you will need some help while installing it, and it is best to call someone who is physically strong. But once you have set it up, there should not be any more problems, allowing you to access the attic with absolute ease.

Pros and Cons of FAKRO LSF 66858

Pros

  • Measures 118 x 47 x 22 inches
  • Made of sturdy steel
  • Adjustable height with 2 options
  • Can take weight up to 300 pounds

Cons

  • Heavy structure weighs 138 pounds
FAKRO LSF 66858 Fire-Resistant Insulated Steel Scissor Attic Ladder for 22-Inch x 47-Inch Rough Openings

  • Insulated, fireproof metal door is fire resistant for up to 60 minutes; also prevents heat loss to save on energy costs
  • Adjustable to fit ceiling heights between 7 feet, 2 Inch and 9 feet, 10 Inch

Buyers Guide

Now that you know about the best attic ladders on the market, it is time to move on to some factors that will help in making the right purchase decision.

Remember that there are major differences among the options, including the material, height, and footpads, to name a few. So, I have curated this buyer’s guide to help you choose the best model according to your needs.

1. Material

What is the type of material that you are looking for in your ladder? It could be made of aluminum or wood, and both offer different finishes and textures. While aluminum ladders are sturdy and lightweight, their wooden counterparts look more authentic but are heavier.

If you have wooden interiors, then a wooden ladder with doors would fit right in. But grey-colored interiors would look better with aluminum ladders. This is also something that you should consider as you would want a model that’s compatible with the overall décor.

2. Load Capacity

This is another criterion that has to be given importance to, and my husband explained it to me in the right way. Please remember that you have to consider the weight of the person along with whatever is going to be carried up and down that ladder.

I was initially only paying attention to the person’s weight, but that is not the case and I almost ended up making wrong assumptions.

For example, if a unit’s weight capacity is 300 lbs, then that includes all the weight that is placed on the ladder at a time. So, if you are going to carry heavy cargo, it is best to go for a model with a maximum weight capacity of 350 lbs or more.

3. Rails

You will get options with and without rails on the market nowadays, and choosing the right one depends on your preferences. Ladders without rails make me a little worried, as I am afraid of heights. So, I always prefer rails for my attic ladders.

Railings provide extra support and will give you something to hold on to while going up or down. But they can be more expensive, and you have to take that into consideration too.

On the other hand, ladders without railings are lighter and more affordable and will take up less space than those with rails. This is more commonly used and works with people who do not have any issues with balancing.

4. Height

What is the height of your ceiling in the room where you need to attach the ladder? The answer to this will determine the type of ladder that will suit you. There are telescoping options too that will allow you to reach otherwise inaccessible places, and you can adjust the height from less than 100 centimeters to 7 feet.

Now, most options are adjustable between 2 heights, and you can check beforehand if the range is suitable for your needs.

5. Feet

The feet play a very important role in ensuring that ladders stay in place without making marks on the flooring. If you have wooden flooring, there are chances that the ladder would make skid marks that look bad. But most options today have feet that prevent marring of the surface as they are coated with rubber.

So, please remember to check the feet properly before purchasing, as that would help in the long run.

6. Door Size

I was initially under the assumption that all ladders would fit the hole on my ceiling, but that is not true. While there is a general size that most houses have, the size of the hole may still be different in some houses. So, it’s better to compare it with the door or frame size of the ladder that you’re willing to buy.

You will find that there are some ladders made for small entry points while others will fit bigger holes better.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How Can I Pull Down Attic Ladders?

The best way to go about it is with the provided rod or a hook. But if you are going to use a telescopic ladder, then you will have to pull up the steps and lock them in place before using it.

2. Should The End Of The Ladder Touch The Floor?

Yes, it is absolutely essential that the ladder touches the floor as it will provide stability. If it hangs free, there is a chance of falling off that you must avoid at all costs.

My Final Recommendations

Remember that if the attic stays too cold or hot, then opt for wooden stairs as metal ones might absorb the heat or cold and become unusable for a while. But in doing so, don’t forget to check the size compatibility. Otherwise, it’s just spending money for nothing!

On that note, it’s time for me to wrap up today’s guide. But before that, let me take you through my favorites among the best pull down attic stairs on my list.

The Louisville Ladder AA2210 Elite is my top recommendation for the sturdiness on offer. But if you are looking for an automatic telescoping option, then the Telesteps 1800EP Ladder will work out well.

On the other hand, FAKRO LWP 66809 Attic Ladder is a well-insulated option and will also prove to be a good choice.

Let me know about your favorites in the comment section below. Till next time, take care!
