Have you been fascinated by epoxy river tables and the beautiful shades that they offer? Then you and I are on the same page here!

I have been visiting my family friend’s workshop for years now and have always wondered how he creates such beautiful masterpieces with wood and epoxy. The sheer number of shades and colors, along with the translucent surface, never fails to amaze me.

That is when I thought of talking to him and learning how to use epoxy in the right way. And honestly, I was pleasantly surprised to figure out all the different uses and the large number of things that can be made with it.

Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and today I will share my knowledge about how epoxy works and what do you use it for? If you are a DIY enthusiast like me, you will surely find this read quite interesting.

So, dive in!

How Does Epoxy Resin Work?

Epoxy resin is a hard transparent layering made of epoxide and polyamine, both of which are hardening substances. When you mix them together, the resultant bond will form a clear and solid layer.

It takes somewhere around 24 to 72 hours to dry, depending on how thick you would want the layer to be. My husband showed me how to quicken up the process by using a heat gun or a lamp that helped in effective drying.

What Are Its Uses?

Epoxy has been used by woodworkers for a long time as it is a cheap way to strengthen and preserve wooden surfaces. As I have already mentioned, one of my family friends makes epoxy river tables professionally, and he told me about the different ways in which the material can be used with wood.

You can use it to join pieces of wood as well as create jewelry and beautiful phone cases. In this section, I will discuss them all in detail so that you have a better understanding.

1. Preserving Wood

Wood, when exposed to rain, snow, or pests, can become weak over time, and that is where epoxy comes in. It can be used to preserve rotting or decaying wood, and it has the capacity to protect the material from further damage, especially caused by moisture.

Moreover, hardwood can often shrink because of damage, and epoxy can add a uniform protective layer on all its sides.

Not only that, but my friend also showed me different designs that can be created with various colored dyes and pigments. These penetrate the wood to an extent, thereby creating beautiful patterns.

2. Filling Cracks

Do you have wooden furniture or doors with cracks or holes in them? They can form very easily on wood and can slowly deepen and destroy the entire surface. But you can use epoxy to fill the gaps, crevices, and holes, ensuring a flat and smooth surface.

Furthermore, my friend suggested that I use sawdust along with epoxy to fill the bigger holes. This mixture, when dried completely, will look smooth while providing enough stability and sturdiness to the said object or surface. Besides, the surface can be sanded to ensure a complete smooth finish.

3. Joining Parts

I was very surprised to hear that wood and metal bits can be joined together with the help of epoxy resin. It may look like a thin transparent layer, but it is pretty strong and can be a very sturdy binding agent.

Other Popular Uses Of Resin

My friend has been making resin river tables for a long time, and he keeps talking about how artisans love working with them. Here are the main uses of resin while working on DIY projects. You can try most of them at home, and the detailed process can be easily learned from the internet.

1. Making Bowls

Wooden bowls have been around for a long time, but epoxy makes it all the more beautiful and attractive. Not only will it render more strength and better durability, but it will also enhance the look and  feel. You can create beautiful designs with different colored epoxy.

Plus, you can add small beads or shells to create  distinct patterns and designs.

2. Designing Resin River Table

These tables involve two pieces of lumber with a channel in between, which is filled with epoxy resin. The resultant joint will look like a river (hence the name) and can be painted with different shades of white, blue, and green to create unique effects. The translucent pigment makes the table stand out, and you will have an accent piece for your living or dining room.

3. Resin Jewelry

If you are enthusiastic about creating beautiful jewelry, then consider using epoxy for the purpose. Many artisans mix wooden pieces with epoxy and other decorative objects to create beautiful pieces of jewelry.

Sometimes, epoxy is used with glitter and colors to make attractive bracelets and pendants. The transparency paired with beautiful shades make such pieces a real treat for the eyes.

Final Words

Now that you know all about the different uses of this material, it is best that you check tutorial videos before proceeding. While the translucent layering looks beautiful, there are various techniques to achieve the final look.

For instance, if you want to create different shades, then you will have to work with multiple layers and dry them in between.

Also, let me tell you that it will take a while to get used to resin, and I had to go through a few failed attempts before I mastered the process. You will slowly understand the right temperature needed, and it is best to follow the instructions while making any kind of epoxy jewelry, bowls, or tables.

On that note, I will wish you all the best for all upcoming projects, and I will be back with such informative guides in the future. Until then, goodbye!
