A cup of coffee every evening does lift my spirits for sure, but I’ve often had a tough time dealing with the aftermath.
After all, a sink clogged with coffee grounds can very well seem like your worst nightmare coming true. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve faced this issue, and each time I spent almost half the day clearing the clog using cleaners of different kinds.
This was until my neighbor Jessie arrived home one of those days just as I was about to start the cleaning process. I still wonder how her timing was so perfect! Witnessing my plight, she immediately told me to keep the cleaners aside and confided to me all about how she deals with such clogs.
And I was surprised to know that all I needed was a few simple tools I already had at home! Since then, I've never been tense about removing clogs caused by coffee grounds. Hence, I’m here to tell you about how I tackled the situation, and you can, too.
Hi! I’m Stacy, and today I’ve brought this guide on how to unclog a sink clogged with coffee grounds.
So, let’s dive in!
3 Methods For Removing Sink Clogs Caused By Coffee Grounds
Considering that a single method might not work in all the cases, Jessie had suggested three methods to me. She also reminded me that the severity of the clog might vary, and accordingly, I could try out the one I felt was the best. So, let’s have a brief look at each of these methods.
1. Using A Plumber’s Snake
Also referred to as a drain snake, a plumber’s snake is actually a very flexible and long auger used for unclogging pipes in the plumbing system. In fact, this tool will be effective even in situations where the other methods don’t seem to loosen or ease the clog.
That’s why I once decided to adopt this method directly to remove the coffee grounds interfering with my sink drain. This was when we had a small weekend party at home with close friends, and the sink had one of the toughest clogs I’ve ever dealt with.
So, let’s see how you can effectively use this method to get through the problem.
Step 1:
Push an end of the plumber’s snake into the opening of the sink drain.
Step 2:
Now, turn the handle enclosing the coiled part of the snake.
Step 3:
Continue to push the snake deep into the sink pipe until you sense some resistance. After this, crank its handle so that it bends on the curve below the sink. When it is turned, it will slide smoothly until it hits the clog.
Step 4:
Now, you must rotate the plumber’s snake against the tough clog so that it’s loosened. This would gradually cause the clog to be broken or dissolved.
But sometimes, even that may not be sufficient, so you'll have to pull the clog out of the drain altogether. I’ve faced this situation myself, so I can assure you that this will be very effective indeed.
Step 5:
After you’re done breaking or pulling out the clog, make sure you run water through the sink drain to ascertain whether the obstruction has been cleared totally.
2. Clearing The P-Trap
The P-trap fixture is usually positioned on the lower part of the sink pipe and traps the debris that drains from the sink to curb the formation of clogs therein.
A great technique for removing clogs that aren’t very tough is clearing this fixture thoroughly. I’ve often used this method for removing the mild clogs after the evening coffee sessions.
To act on clogs formed due to coffee grounds, you need to follow these easy steps.
Step 1:
First, you need to find the exact spot where the P-trap is positioned and then put a bucket underneath that spot. This will serve as an effective catch basin to hold accidental spills or leaks.
Step 2:
Now, you’ll have to loosen the nuts connecting the drain pipeline on both ends. Note that the nuts have to be turned counterclockwise, and if it’s a metallic pipe, you should use a wrench for this purpose.
Step 3:
After the pipe has loosened, take out the trap and ensure you have the bucket placed right below to catch any part that might fall from the pipe.
Step 4:
Following this, you should clean the trap thoroughly to ensure that it’s free from all the debris. You may even use a tool with a pointed end like a screwdriver for removing the debris.
Rinsing the trap after this is done will help remove the remaining debris and dirt if any.
Step 5:
Go through the pipes again to ensure they are clear, and reattach the trap by fastening the nuts. Finally, test the sink by running water to see if it’s being drained properly.
3. Using A Plunger
Another way to remove clogs is by using a plunger, which can be found in any household. However, it may not be effective in all cases, especially when the clogs are too dense.
Note that using a plunger is easier than the other methods. Here’s how you should proceed if you wish to go by this method.
Step 1:
Firstly, fill the entire sink with water and ensure that the water covers the cup-shaped part of the plunger. Follow this by sealing the other side of the sink drain using a rubber stopper or a towel.
Step 2:
Now, place the cup over the drain opening, push it down and pull it up. Continue this process till the clog is entirely cleared.
Summing It Up
So, release your worries and steer clear of the coffee grounds stuck from your sink drain. I bet it will be a smooth sailing affair for you now, just as it was for me!
But before I wrap up, here’s a small tip to keep in mind. At the start, you must determine the intensity of the clog to choose the ideal method to go for.Â
If the water flow is completely obstructed and the sink is getting filled with water on opening the tap, there’s a very dense clog and vice versa.Â
That’s all for today, folks! I will be back soon with more guides. Till then, take care!
