Synthetic Sole Vs. Rubber Sole Vs. Leather Sole

Have you wondered about types of soles for your shoe?

Recently I got interested in types of soles and tried to figure out why some people think one is better than the other. If you know me, you'll know that I love to maintain my shoes and like to have multiple shoes for various occasions.

The last time I counted, I had 8 running shoes, all in perfect condition. So, I decided to understand the differences and benefits of the most common soles - rubber, leather, and synthetic materials.

Today I will share my opinions surrounding the debate of "Synthetic soles Vs. Rubber sole Vs. Leather sole." Hi! I'm Stacy Smith, bringing you all the information on types of shoe soles and answering if one is superior to others.

Let's compare them step by step.

Comparison Between Different Types Of Shoe Soles

A. Synthetic Sole

I'm sure you must have heard of PVC and EVA. If not, these are examples of synthetic materials often found in the manufacturer of shoe soles. They are used in running shoes, especially allowing the runner to reach high speeds.

Types Of Synthetic Soles

1. PVC Sole

Polyvinyl chloride is used to make many synthetic objects, including shoe soles. These plastic polymers are made with a direct injection process, but sometimes thick boards can be used as well. Also, they are pretty pliable and resistant to abrasions.

2. EVA Sole

Although there are many synthetic materials, the second most common material used for making soles is EVA. Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate is used in the manufacture of soles because it is comparatively softer to touch and flexible.

Benefits

1. Low Cost

Since they can be produced on a large scale, synthetic shoe soles tend to cost less as compared to rubber and leather.

2. Water Resistant

One of the biggest reasons to use synthetic soles is for their water-resistant properties. Most of our beach sandals and bathroom slippers are made of synthetic materials.

Disadvantages

1. Slippery

Synthetic soles tend to be a bit slippery on wet surfaces. However, if you are going to use them on gravel or rough surfaces, there shouldn't be an issue.

2. Non-Biodegradable

Many people are shifting towards purchasing eco-friendly products nowadays. These soles are made of artificial plastic material, which takes a long time to break down naturally.

B. Rubber Sole

Latex is a milky sap extracted from trees to produce natural rubber. The raw substance is processed with ammonia to allow the formation of rubber, and further acids and chemicals are added for completing the process. These soles are pretty comfortable to wear for long periods.

Benefits

1. Long Lasting

Rubber is quite durable, and they can bounce back into shape when manipulated or bent. They can also function without damage on most surfaces, including mud, sand, and concrete.

2. Lightweight

Many basketball shoes are lined with a thin layer of rubber for the insole. This is because they are pretty light and allow for quick running and jumping. Rubber soles are also readily available, so replacing them is never something to worry about.

Disadvantages

1. Slippery

These soles are naturally slippery on smooth floors and tiles. Sanding or scrubbing the outer soles allows them to become rough and reduces the chances of slipping. No one would select shoes with rubber soles for walking on ice since they don't give much grip in lower temperatures.

2. Prone To Cracks

Unlike leather, rubber soles do not mold to the shape of your feet. Most thicker rubber soles have the ability to absorb shocks while jumping, but they are unusable if cracked. If you dry them too soon, they break and tear immediately.

C. Leather Sole

Leather is made of cattle animal skin, but you also get the skin of exotic animals like snakes and crocodiles. Nowadays, people prefer to buy faux leather to prevent cruelty to animals.

Benefits

1. Comfort

Leather shoes and soles are tough but at the same time have the ability to mold the feet as you move. They are far more comfortable to wear compared to rubber or synthetic options.

2. Strength

We often think of leather as the highest quality for shoe and sole making. While that may be true, the durability of the sole depends on how many layers of leather have been used. A double-layered sole would last for many years if taken care of.

Disadvantages

1. Absorbs Water

One thing which no one likes is a soaked pair of shoes. However, you cannot do much about it if you wear shoes with leather soles since they absorb water like a sponge. I would not recommend these soles for a rainy day, and it's best to save them for formal occasions.

2. Expensive

Leather is used to make some of the most expensive and designer products worldwide. There is no doubt about its elegance, but this is definitely not budget-friendly, and you can't wear them every day.

Which Is Better - Synthetic, Rubber Or Leather?

After looking at the benefits and disadvantages of each, is there a winner?

No. I think the best choice depends on your purpose. No material is exceptionally better, and they all have various purposes which they excel at. Synthetic soles are suitable for running, especially on cement or unpaved roads, while rubber soles are great for flexibility. Furthermore, you can opt for leather if you need a stylish sole for fancy shoes.

Final Words

So, here was the comparison between synthetic, rubber, and leather soles. As I looked into all three, I found that there are different benefits to all of them. Ultimately it comes down to your use and personal preference.

I prefer to use synthetic and rubber soles since they are pretty easy to find. Leather shoes are not that interesting to me but would be attractive to people who like fancy shoes.

My husband has a few leather soles for formal occasions, but that’s about it. That being said, I hope this quick guide answered all your questions regarding the 3 types of soles.

See you in the next one, bye!
