On pleasant sunny days, what can be more exciting than taking a ride through the countryside on your dirt bike?
Well, at least for biking enthusiasts like me, it seems like the best idea. And since you’re here, I am sure it is so for you too!
However, I was always confused about how fast dirt bikes could go. I found very little information about its speed on the manual except that it had a 250cc engine, and neither did the sellers discuss this in detail during the purchase.
As a result, I could sense during my rides that there was much scope for a faster and smoother riding experience. And I was wondering how to sort out this issue when my husband suggested conducting some effective research.
So, without further delay, I started browsing on how fast a dirt bike of 250cc could go. And within a few days, I had figured out everything and adjusted my bike to make the future rides more fulfilling.
Hi! I’m Stacy, and today I’m here to answer the question, “How fast does a 250cc dirt bike go?”. Let’s begin!
How Fast Can A Dirt Bike Of 250cc Go?
Is It The Right Bike For You?
First of all, you should know that dirt bikes coming with 250cc engines are recommended for riders with experience of at least two months. That’s because such bikes are tough to handle for beginners.
This is why I couldn’t let my daughter practice with the one I had when she expressed her interest to learn riding a month ago. So, I bought her a 125cc bike instead, and she’s doing great with that.
How Fast Does It Go?
Well, if you need a short and simple answer, then I’d say dirt bikes have a speed of 70 to 85 mph on average. But practically speaking, there are many different factors influencing the speed of a dirt bike and can often cause this range to vary.
So, you will need to know each of these factors in-depth to get an effective answer to this question.
1. Weight Of The Tires
Using lighter tires on your dirt bike can enhance its speed. And during my research, I learned that the weight of the tires could be altered by removing the tire mousse or slime.
Now, you must keep in mind that this entails some risk, but then, riding bikes also comes with its own share of risks, doesn't it?
Another thing to remember is that you should never go for cheaper tires, thinking that the lighter weight will enhance the speed. After all, this wrong assumption had once cost me a lot as I had to replace the tires after they got damaged within a couple of days.
2. Brand
As with every other vehicle nowadays, you’ll find different kinds of dirt bikes with 250 cc engines. And each comes with its own specifications and alterations that lend a uniqueness to it. As such, the brand of the dirt bike does influence its speed to a great extent.
3. Seat Weight
Though it might sound surprising at first, changing the seat of your dirt bike can alter its speed considerably. Since the bike is built by assembling different parts, some lighter parts would naturally lead to an overall decrease in its weight, thereby enhancing its speed.
4. Exhaust System
The exhaust system of a dirt bike is partially built of metal to cover for the damage due to regular use. And in the case of most models, it uses aluminum or steel, which are much heavier, thereby contributing to its weight.
So, going for a bike with an exhaust that uses a lighter metal such as titanium can help reduce its weight and ultimately enhance its speed. Titanium exhausts are also much stronger than the other two metals.
But you may have to go the extra mile to search for a dirt bike with a titanium exhaust as they are comparatively rarer on the market. Luckily, the model I got came with such an exhaust, which put me at an advantage over some of my fellow riders in the neighborhood.
5. Rear And Front Sprockets
Interestingly, I found out that the size of the sprockets or the projections found on the rim of its wheels affects the speed of a dirt bike too.
A model with small sprockets at the rear portion and larger ones at the front will provide greater speed in sandy areas. Similarly, while riding in a mountainous area, switching the sprockets will do the trick.
This trick proved useful for my beach riding trips since the speed could be enhanced by at least 10 mph.
6. 4 Stroke vs. 2 Stroke Dirt Bikes
Another major factor that brings about a difference in the speed of a dirt bike is the stroke of its engine. These bikes can come with either four-stroke or two-stroke engines, which are different in terms of acceleration limits, top speeds, and a few other attributes.
A two-stroke engine basically requires two motions of the piston to start, whereas a four-stroke one needs four motions. As such, the former is a less complicated choice than the latter and takes less time to start.
In terms of speed, 4-stroke engines offer a greater top speed than 2-strokes and are more consistent in their performance.
