How Fast Does A 125cc Dirt Bike Go

One of the things I used to be mighty impressed with when I was younger was dirt bikes.

Granted, I had gone past the stage where my husband or I could try to ride a dirt bike without injuring ourselves. Interestingly, our kids picked up on our fascination for the sport. Before we knew it, our son was insistent on having a dirt bike of his own. At this point, it was too late to refuse, and frankly, we didn’t want to either.

I did a little bit of research because as much as I wanted him to enjoy the bike, I wanted him to have something he could handle. After much deliberation, my husband and I decided on a 125cc bike, and when we told him, he said, “Great, but how fast does a 125cc bike go?”. And while it did make me chuckle, it also got me thinking.

Hi there! My name is Stacy, and if you need some information on the dirt bikes, you’re in the right place. I have put together this little guide for anyone looking to learn more about the vehicle and the sport.

So, without further ado, let’s get right to it.

How Fast Does A 125cc Dirt Bike Go

While the speed majorly depends on the company that manufactures the bike, on average, every dirt bike goes upto 55 to 60 miles per hour at least.

That being said, there are many bikes with lower max speeds as well. The faster ones are usually four-stroke engines which give it more power. In addition, there are many bikes with two-stroke engines that are more suited to people who want even more power as those go up to 100 miles per hour.

Since I was looking for something that would suit my son, I focused on dirt bikes with a max speed that was more appropriate for him.

Ideal Top Speed For Kids

Most of the time, kids as early as ten start getting interested in dirt biking. By the time they are old enough, they want to ride the fastest bike available. However, it does not take a genius to know that giving a kid a fast bike is not a good idea, which is why I opted for a 125cc bike.

Usually, a four-stroke 125cc bike can go upto 55 mph, which is more than enough for kids. Not only is it fast enough, but it can also reach the top speed in about 4 seconds. Additionally, a 125cc bike allows the kid to be fast and also lets them control the vehicle.

With that being said, my son’s bike went up to 65 mph even though the company mentioned 60 mph as the top speed. This is because there are multiple factors that can alter the top speed.

Speed Determinants For 125cc Dirt Bike

1. Engine

One of the biggest reasons speed in a dirt bike varies is that there are multiple types of engines. As we have already established, a 125cc bike can quickly go up to 60 mph.

However, a bike with a smaller engine, such as a 50cc bike, will only be able to go 25 mph. Similarly, a bike with a bigger engine will easily be able to speed up more and faster. This goes to show that just one aspect of a dirt bike can make a whole lot of difference.

2. Gears

Here I am not just talking about any gears but sprocket gears that help set the direct bike in motion. Most of the speed is dependent on this little gear, and the lack of a proper one will slow down the vehicle.

In most 125cc bikes, such gear setups are in the front and the back of the bike, which allows it to run smoothly. Furthermore, it increases the top speed of the bike as well. If you have a bike with a 15 mph top speed, gearing up can increase it to 40 mph.

3. Modifications

Finally, come the modifications. Now it is always fun to customize and make your dirt bike look and respond better. For example, adding a sprocket is a great way to amp up the bike and ensure it moves faster.

However, a modified bike doesn't always mean it is better. So, make sure that you know the modifications that are required and being done on the bike.

Speed Vs. Control

I do not blame you for wanting to know how fast a bike is; after all, the thrill is in the speed. However, it is crucial to understand that the cycle should only be as fast as you can handle. Irrespective of whether it is regular riding or dirt biking, control over the vehicle is essential.

It is essential to remember that the path is not smooth when it comes to dirt biking. It usually has a ton of obstacles that need to be carefully maneuvered around. This is why if a bike is too fast, it may lose control.

Tips

One of the things I would highly recommend is riding the bike to ascertain the top speed. Make sure you are doing this on a secure, well-defined path.

The best way to understand the top speed of a dirt bike is to complete three rounds on the said path within a given time. And, once the rounds are over, make sure to calculate the time and distance completed to get a more accurate number on the top speed.

Additionally, make a note of the speed mentioned by the manufacturers.

Final Words

With that, I finally come to the end of my review on the top speed in a 125cc dirt bike. I hope this has been an informative read.

I want to reiterate that buying a bike that your kid can control is essential, which also affects the speed. However, being safe is even more critical. It is important to ensure that the kid gradually warms up to the gear patterns and then picks up speed instead of trying to ride on top speed.

On that note, I shall sign off now. It is time for another dirt biking lesson with my grandkids.

Until next time!
