How To Adjust The Carburetor On A Craftsman Weed Eater

To be honest, very few machines can work as well as a CRAFTSMAN Weed Eater. 

However, like any other product with a two-cycle engine, its carburetor needs to be adjusted from time to time. And, this can be challenging for those who are new to using outdoor tools. 

Hence, I thought of coming up with this guide on how to adjust the carburetor on a Craftsman weed eater. So, without further ado, let's get started! 

Adjusting The Carburetor On A CRAFTSMAN Weed Eater 

Before you begin the adjustment, I have some things to share. I was surprised to know that many people alter the grooves in the carburetor screws to make them compatible with Phillips screwdrivers. But, I suggest you don't do that as it may render the warranty on the trimmer invalid. Instead, try the Pac-Man style screwdriver that's meant for adjusting carburetor screws. 

Now, let's dive into the rest of the process. 

Step 1 

Before adjusting the carburetor, you need to identify the different screws. Typically, the carburetor will have two screws, one labeled "Hi" and the other labeled "Lo." The "Hi" lets you regulate the engine when it's at full throttle. And, the "Lo" screw is for regulating the fuel flowing into the engine while it's idling. There will be another distinct screw at the top to adjust the idle. 

In some models, the “Lo” is indicated by the letter “L.” 

Step 2 

Before adjusting, turn on the machine and let it turn idle — you want your Weed Eater to be warm while working on the carburetor. 

Now, find the "Lo" or "L" screw, and begin by tightening it clockwise, that is, to the right. Keep doing that until it stops, but be careful not to make it too tight. Then, you will need to turn it counterclockwise, that is, towards the left, for a complete revolution. 

Repeat the same process for the screw marked "Hi" before moving on to the next step. 

Step 3 

When you are running the machine, make sure to be in a well-ventilated space to avoid inhaling the gas. Also, I recommend using noise-canceling headphones as the sound of the roaring engine can get loud. 

Most users will then notice that the Weed Eater sounds rough and doesn’t do a great job without proper adjustments. So, you have to take time putting in the screws for the machine to run smoothly. 

Start by turning the "Hi" screw towards the left and run the engine on full throttle to observe any sputtering. You may need to adjust the screw a couple of times before the engine runs smoothly. 

The adjustment of the "Hi" screw will vary based on the load size, the Weed Eater head you're using, and the freshness of the fuel.
