How To Kill A Sycamore Tree 

When dealing with a sycamore tree, I looked for the easiest yet effective methods to get the job done, as I don’t have the most experience with landscaping. And here are some of them: 

1.  Frilling 

One of the most effective ways to kill a sycamore tree is frilling, which involves cutting grooves in the tree to expose the cambium to prevent nutrients from going into the rest of the tree. Hence, the tree will stop growing further, as the transportation of nutrients along the trunk will be cut off. 

In this method, the cambium of the tree should be exposed while the chips of the trunk should be left intact. So, cut grooves around the length of the trunk, then use a hatchet or chainsaw to add an angled cut to access the cambium. Let these cuts remain exposed and attached to the trunk with the bark intact to make the tree break down on its own. 

2. Girdling 

Another common strategy to eliminate a sycamore tree is called girdling. This is a straightforward process that involves cutting a few grooves in the trunk that are one and a half inches deep. You can space them one to two inches apart for small trees, while larger trees can have six to eight-inch gaps between the grooves. 

Once the grooves have been cut, a hatchet or chainsaw can be used between the notches to remove the pieces of bark. Continue this process throughout the tree to successfully remove it from the ground. 

3. Herbicides 

After using either of these methods, herbicides can then be used to quickly and effectively remove the remainder of the sycamore tree. By applying herbicides to the surrounding soil, the remaining pieces will be broken up and eventually die off. 

One crucial aspect to keep in mind when using a herbicide right after girdling or frilling is making sure it is a water-soluble variant. Ensure you are applying the herbicide solution directly to the cambium of the tree to ensure it works as effectively as possible. Soaking and penetrating the tree is the goal, so this precise application will help to speed up the process.
