How To Kill Grass Around Trees

Though grass is everywhere, the underside of a tree is not an ideal spot for it to grow.

The leaf canopy of a tree prevents sunlight from reaching the grass, which means that the plant cannot photosynthesize and subsequently dies. In addition, grass depletes essential nutrients needed by trees, and the upkeep needs of a tree and grass are not the same.

So, if you’re wondering how to kill grass around trees, you’re in the right place. Read on to know more!

How To Kill Grass Around Trees

1. Digging

One of the ways to obliterate the grass around trees is to dig up patches of grass manually. To effectively get rid of the grass, the thatch and the top layer need to be removed. Note that the thatch reaches about two inches below the soil and should be removed carefully.

I recommend using your hands to dig because using tillers or other similar tools might cause irreparable damage to the tree. However, you can safely use hoes, shovels, or dethatchers to remove sod around the roots of the tree.

If you uncover any tree roots during this process, you can bury them back inside by adding a layer of topsoil over them.

2. Herbicides

You don’t have to worry about harming the tree if you consider using herbicides. Glyphosate is one such herbicide that will kill the grass but won’t affect the tree. All you need to do is read the herbicide label and whether it could damage your tree.

According to me, the best time to use a herbicide is a windless, sunny day. This way, you don’t have to worry about the wind carrying the herbicide spray to another part of your lawn or the rain washing it away.

Additionally, I recommend using a cardboard cover to shelter your tree while you’re spraying the chemicals. This will ensure that the leaves and the tree trunk remain out of harm’s way.

3. Mulching

To kill the grass using this method, you must mulch around the tree so that the radius is equal to the canopy. Moreover, using a weed barrier or wet newspaper laid on the ground will prevent the sun from reaching the grass and ensure that air and water reach the roots.

I recommend using a weed barrier made of cloth and spreading a 2-4 inch thick layer of mulch over the newspaper or barrier. You’ll notice that the grass will die in about a month.

Final Thoughts

Determining the best method is difficult since it depends on the tools you have on hand and the amount of time you invest in the process. However, I feel that herbicides are the most convenient because they work instantly and require minimal effort.

On the other hand, digging is very labor-intensive, and mulching takes a month to show results.

And with that, I’ll be signing off with the hope that this guide was helpful for you. Hope to see you again soon!
