Can You Use A Chainsaw In The Rain

The weather might not always be favorable on the day you plan to cut wood.

That said, you might be wondering whether cutting tools like chainsaws can be used during rainy weather. And owing to the humid weather in my region, I, too, was often left confused initially. But a bit of research and many years of experience have helped clear my doubts.

So, today, I thought of penning this guide to answer the much-asked question, “can you use a chainsaw in the rain?”.

Can You Use A Chainsaw In The Rain

If you need a simple answer, then yes, a chainsaw can be used even when it’s raining as this cutting tool won’t be damaged by the pouring rain. However, you have to ensure that the chainsaw engine isn’t submerged in rainwater.

So, if you were thinking about postponing the plans for woodcutting due to snow or rain, know that it’s not a must.

That said, several other questions might come to your mind regarding whether it is safe to use chainsaws under wet conditions. And I’ve tried to answer each of them based on my experience with chainsaws.

1. Is It Safe To Run A Wet Chainsaw?

There’s no risk involved in using a chainsaw that’s wet — it will continue to run and won’t stop midway. However, a chainsaw that isn’t functioning indicates that water has entered the chainsaw, so you should get it examined by a mechanic. Note that gas-powered chainsaws are more likely to continue functioning.

2. Should You Cover The Engine With Plastic While Running A Chainsaw?

Though many users make this a practice while using a chainsaw in the rain, experts say it’s not necessary. Actually, it doesn’t make a difference as the water is unlikely to enter the engine in such situations. Only when the chainsaw is submerged is there a risk of engine contamination.

3. Is It Possible To Cut Wet Wood Using A Chainsaw?

Yes, wet wood can be cut using a chainsaw. That said, you might experience extra build-up on the wood, but you can always clean that with a rag.

There’s also a misconception that wet wood may impact the chain and bar of a chainsaw. But the reality is that damp wood can’t make the chainsaw dull any faster than dry wood.

Final Words

That was all you had to know about using chainsaws in the rain. Hopefully, your confusion has been cleared now.

But before I wrap up my guide, I’d like to highlight another important point — when working with a chainsaw in the rain, a secure footing is non-negotiable. That’s because accidentally slipping while operating the tool might be fatal.

On that note, it’s time to bid goodbye. But I’ll be back soon with more how-to guides, so stay tuned and stay safe!
