How Much Extra Backsplash Tile To Buy

A common problem with most tilling projects is the failure to purchase extra backsplash tile.

Rarely do people purchase the exact number of tiles for their home projects, whether it’s for wall tiling or floor tiling. And although you may have made accurate calculations and measurements, it’s essential to keep some extra tiles for emergencies.

So the question remains: how much extra backsplash tile to buy? Read on to find out!

1. What Are The Risks Of Not Purchasing Extra Tiles?

Selecting the type, color, and style of your tiles can be a stressful experience, but it adds up even more when you’ve not purchased enough tiles. Can’t believe it? Check out the risks you might face when you don’t have enough.

A. Mismatched Shade

It can be a nightmare for your home renovation or improvement project when you are short of building materials, especially backsplash tiles. Whenever a new batch of tile is manufactured, its sizes and shading might change from the previous one. So, you might not get similar tiles once a batch is sold out.

And there will be noticeable differences in the shade or color once all the tiles are installed.

B. Tile Is Out Of Stock

Another common issue that you may face is your favorite tile getting out of stock. Hence, if you find that some of the purchased tiles are broken or cracked in the middle of the project, you won’t have any replacements.

2. How Much Extra Should You Purchase?

When starting with a home renovation project, it’s imminent to determine the specific amount of materials required for it. And this will depend on the project type, tile size, and shape. As a general thumb rule, you should keep at least 10-15% extra tiles, which will help you tackle:

  • Oddly shaped rooms
  • Working on unusual design shapes
  • Damaged or broken tiles

But firstly, you’ve to calculate the number of extra tiles you need for the project.

Start by calculating the area of the room you’re renovating along with the space your selected tile will take up. Dividing the former area value by the latter gives you the exact number of tiles you need. And once you have the final number of tiles, add 15% of the number to it before placing the order.

Final Words

Now, if you find out you don’t have access to adequate materials in the middle of the project, here are some solutions to deal with it.

Change the design you had in your mind and ask the renovator to work on one that can be completed with the remaining materials. Or, you can use other materials like paint that perfectly matches the tiles you have. This will help you complete the design as planned without compromising on the final look.

And I will see you next time. Bye!
