Can You Plant a Tree Next to a Stump

Removing a tree stump in your backyard can be time-consuming and physically taxing.

But leaving it out takes up space that you may want to use for outdoor decor or planting new trees. Moreover, planting new trees around the old stump can be tricky as the old tree and its root systems may have compromised the soil health in the surrounding area.

That said, you have to take a few precautions before planting a tree near an existing stump. Here’s how.

How To Plant A Tree Next To A Stump

Step 1

Choose a place near the stump that will allow you to dig a hole that’s twice the diameter of the root system of your new tree. Ideally, you want to plant the new tree about eight feet away from the stump so that you don’t have any issues later.

Step 2

Use a pickaxe and a shovel to dig the hole. While digging, make sure to collect the soil from the hole on a plastic sheet or tarp so that you can use it later.

Step 3

Keep digging until you have made a hole deep enough to hold the roots of your new tree.

Step 4

Get rid of any plastic containers or burlap from around the roots of your new tree. Then, place the tree in the center of the hole.

Step 5

Finally, fill the area around the tree’s root with the soil that you have dug out. But first, make sure that you remove chunks of roots and rocks from the soil. Continue filling the hole until it is even with the ground level. After that, water the area to allow the soil to settle.

Replanting A New Tree Where An Old Tree Was

Alternatively, you may want to remove the old tree stump and plant another one in its place. And while planting a new tree in the original spot is possible, it might not be wise.

This is because the old tree has most likely stripped the soil of numerous essential nutrients that the new one requires to grow and thrive. Therefore, I recommend planting the new tree somewhere close to where the stump of an old tree used to be.

Final Thoughts

I hope I have been able to answer your question: Can you plant a tree next to a stump? And whether or not you choose to remove the tree stump, it is always best to plant new trees at a safe distance.

As a rule of thumb, you should choose an area about eight feet away from the tree stump before proceeding. That way, you can ensure that your new plant will get the required nutrients and space to thrive.

With that said, it’s time for me to wrap things up. Hope to see you soon.
