A basement is a bonus that every homeowner loves, as you can turn it into any room you’ve always wished for.
But when remodeling a basement, a crucial aspect you need to be clear about is the time required for the project. So, based on the remodeling project I got done recently, I’m here to help you figure out how long does a basement remodel take.
How Long Does A Basement Remodel Take?
Firstly, know that the time taken for a basement remodeling project depends on various factors. These include the materials you plan to use, the required size, how you’ll organize the project, and more.
For instance, a simple remodeling of a 90 sq. m basement will take around three to four days if you devote 230 to 250 staff hours. But if you wish to turn a basement into a full-fledged living area, the project might require up to one month.
The Time Taken On Average
By knowing the time taken for an average basement remodel, you can better estimate the approximate time frame for such a project.
Note that the time required to finish your basement remodel will probably come quite close, if not be the same. That said, there will be a few differences based on factors such as the contractor you choose, the labor employed, the quality of finish, and the size. On average, a 1000 sq. ft. basement will take about four weeks for completion.
I’ll now take you through every phase of the project along with the time needed to complete the same.
1. Framing
This involves detaching the existing structure of the basement and reshaping it to fit the new design. The process can take three to five days, based on the size of the basement.
2. Plumbing, HVAC, And Electricity
Bulkheads are then constructed into the framing to make space for installing the HVAC system and other essential elements. This is also the phase where the “rough-ins” are installed before sealing the walls. These include the plumbing lines, electrical wiring, and HVAC vents. All in all, this phase will require another three to five days to be finished.
3. Inspection
Note that you must get the rough-ins inspected before you move to the next step. And if everything seems fine, you can expect it to be approved within the same day.
4. Drywall Construction
Next, you’ll need to install drywall with a mold-resistant face and standard core, which can take up to five days.
5. Trim, Painting, And Floor Installation
The subsequent phase will involve the installation of door and window casings, wall painting, and flooring installation. Altogether, it can take upto 11 days.
6. Touch Ups
In the following two to three days, the bathroom fixtures and other plumbing and electrical attachments will be installed.
7. Inspection
Ultimately, the remodeled basement will need the approval of the town inspector, which could take another day.
Final Words
That’s a wrap for today. It’s now time for you to start planning the project and get in touch with a suitable contractor. If things go smoothly, you can begin enjoying your newly remodeled basement in a month!
