Acai trees are native to the Amazon rainforest and produce small, dark berries that contain a rich source of antioxidants. They're used for everything from increasing energy levels to weight loss - but how do you get started? In this post, we'll cover all the basics of planting an acai plant in your garden.
How to Plant Acai
Acai (Euterpe Oleracea) is a slow-growing palm tree native to Brazil and Peru. The acai berry contains high levels of vitamin C, antioxidants, minerals, and fiber - but most importantly for plant growers, the fruit can be used in juices and other products. Acai berries are small (compared to acerola, noni, and similar fruits) with a diameter of about 1/2 inch.
Step 1: Buy an Acai Plant
How do you grow acai? The first step is to buy acai seeds or plants from a reputable nursery. If you live in either Brazil or Peru, then that will be the easiest option. If you don't live in either country, we recommend ordering seeds online - more on that below.
Step 2: Prepare the Growing Area
Acai plants can grow up to about 15 feet tall and require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. They should be watered regularly during a growing season - but not over-watered. Acai plants can be planted in an open field or a container.
Step 3: Plant Acai Seeds
How do you plant acai seeds? If you bought acai trees from a nursery, then they'll be ready to go. Otherwise, buy acai seedlings online and follow these steps. First, sterilize the soil by mixing in a bit of hydrogen peroxide. Second, plant the acai seeds in moist soil in a sunny spot and cover lightly with potting mix. Be sure to water it regularly until it starts growing.
How to grow Acai
After you've planted your acai palm, the next step is to care for it. Acai trees are very hardy and don't need much - but they still need some attention every once in a while. We recommend doing these things at least once per month:
1
Fertilize: Use an acai fertilizer that can be dissolved in water.2
Remove Fruit: Pick fruit as soon as it ripens - this helps the plant to stay healthy and avoid disease.
How to harvest Acai Berries
Acai is a tropical berry that can be harvested during the summer and fall.
Step 1: Pick Berries
Wait until the acai fruit on your tree ripens - this should take about 3 weeks - then pick them off the tree using tweezers or gloves. Make sure to leave at least 4 inches of stem still attached to each berry.
Step 2: Clean the Berries
Wash your acai berries to remove dirt and other debris then store them in a plastic bag. Acai can be kept for about 2 months if it is stored in a refrigerator - otherwise, try freezing them to keep them longer.
How to know if Acai is ripe
Acai berries are ready to harvest when they're soft and dark purple. If you press the acai fruit, then it should be squishy instead of hard - this is a sign that it's ripe for picking.
What does Acai Berry taste like
Acai berries taste a bit tart with a hint of sweetness - and they're very small. If you've never tried acai fruit before, then we recommend buying some at the store first to get an idea of how it tastes. You can also try acai juice or other products made with acai berry syrup (such as jam, sorbet, and ice cream).
How to store Acai Berries
Storing acai berries is a little tricky. You can keep them fresh longer by freezing them in a plastic bag with other fruits - but this will only delay spoilage. The best way to store acai is to use an electric dehydrator and make freeze-dried acai powder.
Step 1: Wash the Fruit
We recommend washing your acai berries with a bar of mild soap - we like to use Dr. Bronner's almond or peppermint Castile soaps, but any brand should do. This step is optional but will help keep acai fresh longer.
Step 2: Dry the Fruit on a Screen
Acai fruit should be dried in an electric dehydrator at a temperature between 68° F (20° C) and 95° F (35° C). You can dry acai on a screen instead of using a dehydrator - just make sure there is good air circulation.
Step 3: Store in an Air-Tight Container
After it's done drying, you'll want to store your acai berries in an air-tight container that is kept at about room temperature (68° F - 77° F / 20° C - 25°C).
Step 4: Turn into Acai Powder
Once your acai berries have been dried, you can turn them into freeze-dried acai powder by pulverizing the fruit into a powder using a food processor or blender. The freeze-drying process preserves the acai berries and can be used as an addition to many recipes, including smoothies, salad dressings, sprinkles on top of yogurt, cereals, and more!
Step 5: Store Acai Powder
It is important to store homemade acai berry powder in an air-tight container in a dark place. It will stay fresh for at least 1 year if stored properly.
How to use and cook Acai Berries
Idea 1: Add to Smoothies
Using freeze-dried acai berries in smoothies is one of the most popular uses for the berry. Acai can be added to almost any smoothie recipe, but it's especially good with a base of bananas or other tropical fruits. The powder will help thicken your smoothie and add extra vitamins and antioxidants! You may want to start with less powder and add more as you get used to the taste.
Idea 2: Add to Cereals and Oatmeal
Freeze-dried acai berries can be sprinkled on top of cereal, oatmeal, yogurt or even in pancake batter!
Idea 3: Use as a Salad Dressing Ingredient
We love mixing acai powder into our salad dressings. The berry has a tart, fruity flavor that can add a kick to any mixture of common ingredients! We recommend starting with 1 tablespoon of acai powder and adding more as desired.
Idea 4: Use in Jams and Ice Creams
A quick internet search will reveal many recipes for making acai jam or ice cream. It's easy to find premade acai products at health food stores, but these recipes are a great way to use up your own frozen fruit!
Idea 5: Use in Homemade Snacks
Making homemade acai treats is easy with freeze-dried powder, which has the texture of sand and can be stirred into any recipe. You can also find acai powder in premade treats sold at health food stores.
Health Benefits of Acai Berry
The main health benefit of acai fruit is its high vitamin content. Acai berries are considered a vitamin powerhouse and have among the highest vitamin A levels of any plant - 4 times more than that found in strawberries, for example. Acai berry juice has 2-3 times more vitamin C than a lemon, 5-6 times more iron than spinach, 4-5 times more vitamin E than a carrot, and 6-8 times more vitamin K than broccoli.
Helps Fight Free Radicals
Acai berries contain vitamin C and vitamin A which are both necessary for the development of collagen found throughout your body. Collagen helps to strengthen blood vessels, bones, gums, skin, and more, so vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps minimize your risk of heart disease and cancer. Vitamin A is also an antioxidant that slows the aging process by fighting free radicals in your body.
Improves Eye Health
Acai berries are loaded with vitamin E, which plays an important role in maintaining eye health. Vitamin E can help prevent cataracts, macular degeneration, and night blindness. In addition, acai berries are a good source of vitamin A which helps maintain healthy vision.
Boosts Your Immune System
Vitamins C and A play key roles in the development of collagen, which is important for your immune system health. Vitamin E also plays an important part in immune system health and vitamin K is necessary for healthy bone marrow, which produces the body's white blood cells.
Helps Fight Cancer
Although vitamin A and vitamin E have been linked to a decrease in cancer risk there hasn't been any research linking acai berry consumption to cancer prevention.
Boosts Your Mood
Vitamin K can help to balance the stress hormone cortisol as well as vitamin B-6 and vitamin E which are needed for your body's production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps keep you calm. Acai berries have also been shown to lower blood pressure and may also be effective in the treatment of depression.
Helps Fight Diabetes
Although vitamin C can affect the way your body absorbs blood sugar, studies have shown that vitamin C doesn't actually improve glucose tolerance in diabetics without vitamin C deficiency. Acai berries contain vitamin K and vitamin B-6 which are important nutrients for regulating blood sugar levels.
