If you have an above ground pool in the backyard, you will probably need a pool filter to maintain its hygiene and upkeep.
Last Sunday after Church, I went over to my neighbors to say hi when they had just finished installing their pool. I love pools myself and my neighbor was calling the pool filter “a blessing.”
That piqued my interest, and I decided to find out everything about these filters. When you have an above-ground pool, it is essential to curb dirt and bacteria growth. This is where a pool filter comes in. I ended up finding several of them from different brands and types.
Hi! I'm Stacy, and today I've compiled a list of the five best above ground pool filters out there. Along with a list, I have also included a guide for you to check and compare the pool filters before you make a purchase.
Top 5 Above Ground Pool Filters
1. Intex Store 637R
I came across the 637R filter pump by Intex earlier this summer. My husband wanted to give this filter a try for our son's pool. It was pretty easy to assemble for a non-specialist and reasonably priced too.
Product Highlights
Before we begin, I noticed that not all filters come with a complete set of equipment. The 637R model by Intex stood out because it comes with a replaceable filter cartridge. This means you can change it on your own without spending any money on a new cartridge or new entire filter.
Other than that, it is reasonably priced and does an excellent job of filtering small pools. Also, it is lightweight and made of thin yet strong plastic, so you don't need to worry about breaking your back when shifting it around. What's more, storage is easy for winters because it is compact.
Finally, it uses Hydro Aeration Technology that ensures that an ample amount of air is mixed with the water in the pool. With a system flow rate of 750 gallons per hour, this helps with the oxidation of iron and manganese, making the water sparkling clear.
What's There To Like About It?
The first thing I liked was the hassle-free installation process. The filter itself is easy to clean; it can be removed from the fixed machine, washed and cleaned, then placed back to where it belongs.
Anyone with little to no experience can replace the filters. Another thing I liked was that in case the existing one gets damaged over the years, they give you an extra filter cartridge as a replacement.
What's There Not To Like About It?
This is a small-sized filter meant for small to medium sized pools. Using this product for a giant inflatable pool might not be efficient. Moreover, it cannot be used for long periods at a stretch. The maximum it can stretch is 8 hours, and after that, you run the risk of damaging it.

2. Hayward W3S180T ProSeries
A friend from Church told me about the W3S180T ProSeries model by the Hayward store. It is a sand filter that catches the dirt and debris from the water and pumps out the clean water back into your pool.
Product Highlights
First of all, this filter can be used in all weathers, even winters. It doesn't get damaged by the cold, which is not often seen in pool filters. Also, it is corrosion-resistant due to the material being exceptionally sturdy.
Besides, its unique self-cleaning system enables proper flow and equal distribution of water throughout the pool. Also, there is no need to clean this filter manually as it provides balanced backwashing to keep the filter clean and increase its life naturally.
Along with that, it has a feature called the seven position VariFlo valve, which ensures maximum flow at lower pressure drop. One benefit of having a giant pressure sand or water drain is that it is easy to winterize and prepare for service. Furthermore, it has a top diffuser which makes sure that water is distributed evenly over the sand.
What's There To Like About It?
Now, this option uses sand for filtering and not a cartridge. The benefit of this is that you do not have to manually remove the cartridge, clean and replace it every week. It is self-cleaning, saving you the time and effort required to maintain it.
I also liked that it leaves the pool sparkling blue within a very short time. In a matter of hours after installing this, you will see the water getting clearer.
What's There Not To Like About It?
This might not be the right choice for you if you want a lightweight, compact product. Although it cleans the water efficiently, leaving your pool spotless, it does have one minor downfall. I felt it was too heavy to carry and store in case you want to wrap it up for winter.

3. Summer Waves P53FX1500
On my journey to find the best above ground pool filter, I found the P53FX1500 model by Summer Waves. This seemed like a solid option because of its ability to fix to the side of the pool. Read further to know more about it.
Product Highlights
This filter has a patented and innovative filtration system. What's special about this is that it works both as a water skimmer and a pool filter unit.
Let's talk about skimming first. With its unique skimming technology, it continuously removes debris and dirt from the surface of the water. After this, surface water is pulled into the system and is passed through an inbuilt strainer basket for cleaning.
The second feature of this pool filter is the sanitization of water by the filter cartridge. This works by pumping the water to the filter and passing it through an ultra-fine filter paper, which then purifies the pool water. In case you are curious, the pump filters about 1500 gallons per hour, which is a pretty decent rate.
Lastly, it comes with a GFCI plug, hoses and hose clamps, and all the necessary equipment so that you do not need to make any additional purchases.
What's There To Like About It?
I always look for something lightweight and easy to store away for the winter, and this product was just right for that. It attaches to the sidewall of the pool firmly, which is easy to maintain, looks good, and there isn't any chance of tripping when the kids are running around.
Because of its small size, you can barely see it attached to the pool. Not only that, it is pretty quick in filtering the pool water too.
What's There Not To Like About It?
Even though this product is quite decent overall, personally, I was not too fond of a couple of things. The body is made of a plastic material that is flimsy and not durable. So, it might not be a great option for those of us who want to invest in a good filter and not replace it frequently.
Pros and Cons of Summer Waves P53FX1500
Pros
Cons
- EFFICIENT: Combines the functions of a skimmer and filter pump and keeps pool water clear and clean in one unit
- MAINTENANCE & SAFETY: Attaches to sidewalls of pool for easy maintenance and to prevent tripping. Also features GFCI safety feature

4. Intex 26643EG
The next filter on the list is the 26643EG model by Intex stores. This was the pool filter I saw my neighbors using last week, and I decided to find out all about it.
Product Highlights
Firstly, what impressed me the most about this filter was its proficiency in cleaning pool water and managing the filter. It has multi-function control, the first of which is obviously - filtering. The next feature involves backwashing, which saves up your time and energy for cleaning the product.
After this, it rinses and recirculates water at a quick speed. The pump flow rate is 1200 gallons per hour, and the system flow rate is 1050 gallons per hour. After successfully recirculating, it also drains the water and closes it easily.
Another feature I noted was the 24-hour automatic timer which I did not observe in any other filter. This digital timer automatically turns on and off every day at the time you select for it.
Finally, it also features Hydro Aeration Technology for improved circulation and filtration. And, it comes with a basket strainer which makes it easy to remove and clean.
What's There To Like About It?
One benefit of this pump is the sand filtration pump does not spoil easily. The device is durable and will last many years. The sand also lasts for five years, after which you can replace it with fresh sand and continue using it.
I was surprised at how clear and pure the pool water turned by using this product. It uses Hydro Aeration Technology to improve water clarity.
What's There Not To Like About It?
All said and done, if you are looking for a budget-friendly option, then this might disappoint you. It is one of the priciest pool filters on the market, but there are discounts on online shopping apps which you can avail of. Apart from that, I couldn't find any significant faults worth mentioning.

5. Rx Clear Above Ground Pool Filter
I called up my niece to ask about which product she used, and she said it was a pool filter by Rx Clear. As I checked about it online, this filer has a unique system that they use. Read on to know what it is.
Product Highlights
Until now, we saw cartridge pool filters and sand filters; the next option is something different from the others we have seen so far. This above ground pool filter by Rx Clear uses a unique technology of its own. Instead of using sand, it uses Luster Balls which are a cleansing substance that filters the water.
Additionally, the benefit of Luster Balls is that they won't clog your machine the way sand can. Also, they require less backwashing making it easier to maintain. If you want to use the traditional sand filter, this product is compatible with that too. In case you are looking to purchase, one box of filter media equals 50 pounds of sand.
Apart from this, it is safe and easy to operate. Finally, this option is highly durable and comes with a three-year warranty.
What's There To Like About It?
I particularly liked the powerful system, which filters all the debris with ease. Its unique filter media makes it an excellent replacement for sand filters.
The second thing I liked was how long the product lasts. I just wanted to point out that this pool filter is not exactly low-priced. However, I think it makes up for that by how many years it lasts without the need for repair and replacement.
What's There Not To Like About It?
This filter comes with 1.5-inch threaded connections, filters base, and a user's manual but no hose. Maybe they assume we already have hoses lying around. Either way, you need to purchase them separately.
Also, despite having their own filter media, it does not come with the packaging. You have to make a separate purchase for sand or their Luster filter media. Personally, I felt it would have been better if they just included it with the product.

Buyers Guide
When it comes to maintaining an above ground pool, it takes as much work as a regular pool. Unless you drain and refill the water regularly, there is a risk of bacterial growth. Not to mention, the collection of algae and debris on the floor and sides of the pool.
And, if you want to make do with adding chlorine, it might work in the short term because chlorine kills the bacteria and microbes in the pool, but it can't help with the stagnation of water. To actually remove and purify the microbes, you will need a pool filter.
Now comes the question of how to select the best above ground pool filter. While cost is a factor for any new purchase, a pool filter needs to meet requirements that will make your life easy even after purchase.
A filter that cleans effectively is easy to clean and use and comes with a warranty to boot - these are the features you should be looking for. To make this process easy for you, I have detailed all the things you should know before you make a selection.
1. Type Of Filter
Pool filters are mostly the same in all ways except the medium they use for removing debris. There are three types of filter media - sand, cartridge, and D.E. filters.
a) Sand Filter
This is a popular choice because it requires less time to maintain. The sand particles in the filter are pointy and rough so that when pool water enters the filter, all the debris sticks to the sand.
However, the sand needs to be replaced after some time because the rough surface gets eroded over the years. It is apparent when the sand becomes smooth because the pool water will stop getting clean the way it used to. The simplest solution is to restore the sand.
b) Cartridge Filter
In this filter, there is a plastic cylinder on the inside which is wrapped with a pleated polyester filter media. Now, this works when water is pumped inside the cylinder; it passes through these pleats and comes out the other side fresh.
Do keep in mind that while the sand filters have a backwashing option which in other words means self-clean, here the cleaning is manual. You will need to remove the inner cylinder regularly and wash it with a chemical cleaning solution to keep it in good shape.
c) D.E. Filters
Diatomaceous Earth filters are the most effective types of cleaning media, but they are also usually costly. Inside the plastic box are several grids which are coated with diatomaceous earth. D.E. is basically a fine powder made from plankton fossils.
When the filter becomes less effective, it is possible to add the powder to amp up the device. It is quite a challenge to get these filters clean. You could backwash it like a sand filter, but it takes many gallons to get flushed out. Another option is to remove the grids and wash them manually, but this is not recommended because the powdered grids are hazardous.
2. Installation
Most above ground pool filters take around 10 minutes to 1 hour to install and fix. They often provide instruction manuals with the complete kit. And, if reading tiny words isn't your cup of tea, you can check out YouTube videos from these companies as well as other users.
If you cannot tolerate numerous instructions on assembling devices, then maybe you should go for an option that gets ready to go within 10 minutes.
3. Durability
The quality of materials and build of the filter will definitely affect the number of years you can use it. Nobody wants to buy a filter and use it for one season. However, some of the cheaper ones wear out easily and might break sooner than expected.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often you run the filter depends on two factors - the size of your pool and the power of the filter. When all the water runs through the filter at least once, it's called the turnover rate. On average, you should filter the pool daily.
In order to keep the pool clean, your pool filter should have a turnover rate that filters all of the water during one day.
The short answer is - yes. You can turn the filter on with or without cover. In fact, the filter pumps all the water with the debris through a skimming system to remove larger particles. So, you will be helping the filter by covering it and reducing the amount of dirt and debris it has to filter.
Well, no. There is no need to keep the filter running throughout the day and night. As a general rule, people turn on the filter at a specific time of day, each day. This means that the filter does run daily but is allowed to shut and rest.
If your pool is used for long periods daily, you may need to filter for 8 - 10 hours per day. However, if you use the pool for an hour or so daily or on alternate days, then you need not turn it on for more than once a day.
My Final Recommendation
Now that you have reached the end of this list and guide, I hope you have a better idea about the best above ground pool filter.
In my opinion, the pool filter by Rx Clear was a well-rounded product. I liked that it had a sound system that was powerful enough for larger pools. Comparatively, it seems like the most sturdy option out there, which is vital for one-time purchase products like pool filters.
Also, the W3S180T ProSeries model by Hayward seemed like a pretty reliable option. It was resistant to corrosion and could endure even freezing temperatures. It looks like a great choice if you want a pool filter that lasts for years to come.
Good luck on your selection!
