So, considering everyone’s varied needs and preferences, I’ve compiled some important factors you should consider before getting a backyard movie theater.
1. Image Quality
The image quality of a projector depends on the contrast ratio, native resolution, and source material.
That said, HD (1920 x 1080) and Wide XGA (1280 x 800) are some common resolutions among home projectors. Needless to say, the former offers sharper quality than the latter, and ensures more compatibility with HD videos.
Additionally, if the video you choose to play on the projector is already of low quality, it will appear more degraded on the screen. This is because a larger screen stretches the original video, making the quality more noticeable. So, I recommend matching the image resolution of your projector with that of the movies/games you want to play on the screen.
Lastly, the contrast ratio of a projector determines the difference between the whites and blacks of the image. Although a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 sounds tempting, it may not always be required. In hindsight, I suggest opting for projectors with more color settings. For instance, with the option to adjust the sRGB modes, you can always change the display according to your preference.
