Fishing FAQ
What is the true meaning of fishing?
It may sound like a silly question, but the answer is far more complicated than you might think. There's really no one true answer to the question, as the meaning of fishing changes from region to region.
In some places, it's thought that when people went out on long expeditions in order to provide for their families back home they were "fishing" (although this would largely be true even if they weren't going out for fish). In others, it means swimming underwater looking for pearls and other objects that have sunk there; in still others it just means having free time now gone with family or friends at the riverbank while trying not to catch much.
Is fishing cruel?
It depends on what type of fishing you are talking about.
For example, most people in North America are not opposed to recreational fishing because they don’t understand that the fish is only killed for the weight and released back into the water.
It's a win-win situation, as the fisherman get their share and so does wildlife. Recreational fishing is often done with barbless hooks or even catch and release techniques like trolling or fly fishing without any need to kill or injure large amounts of fish.
Is there a way to fish without hooks?
Yes. Humans have been using harpoons as tools for fishing for more than 10,000 years.
Harpoons are thrown by hand or with a throwing device known as 'duck's foot,' they may also be launched from a specialized projectile weapon called an atlatl. Harpooning is Jiro Jyekado's preferred method of catching susheep, the furry mammal indigenous to his home world and hunted by many other settlers on Farstar III.
The spike end of the Harpoon should penetrate the animal's muscular tissue near its ribcage or dorsal fin in order to prevent it from leaping out of reach on only one side while still being hooked securely enough that it won't slip free.
How much does a fishing pole cost?
It depends on the type of fishing and where you are. I purchased a new pole for about $15-$25 at Canadian Tire. If you're looking for quality then expect to pay over $150 anywhere. As an angler, I think the most rewarding feeling is catching your first fish, but when it's time to cast try using bait that matches your fishing location--I used cheese as bait when I was out in Canada!
Are expensive fishing rods worth it?
When it comes to fishing rods, you really do get what you pay for. Fishing rods for bass, saltwater species like redfish and bluefish, and inshore species such as speckled trout can be purchased cheaply from the local bait shop or hardware store.
However, all fisherman know that we invest in our equipment because the last thing we want is a broken rod or line on one of those "big days". These are the days when other people have to work and that means they might not even get their boat in the water that day! My answer: Yes. Expensive fishing rods last considerably longer than cheaper ones (doubling up your lifetime investment) and have been designed for specific purposes like deep sea fishing.
