Buyers Guide

Now that I’m done with the list of the best epoxy for plastic, let’s move to the next section of this guide. Despite knowing the best options on the market, choosing one remains a daunting task. That’s because not every epoxy is the right one for your needs. There are a lot of factors that you will have to consider while picking one for your tasks.

For this reason, I have prepared a buyer’s guide for you. I’ve gone into the nitty-gritty of each product and shortlisted some important points that you must keep in mind while buying an epoxy. So, let’s take a look.

1. Surface

Before you invest in any epoxy, you will have to take into account the surface that is to be bonded. That’s because not all epoxies are formulated for all kinds of surfaces. So, make sure you consider whether you have to bond plastic to plastic or plastic to metal.

Also, if you are a DIYer looking for epoxies for DIY projects, going for a versatile option is the safest bet. Hence, check whether the product is compatible with multiple surfaces or not. Also, don’t forget to take a look at whether it can be used outdoors or not. Considering all these points will help you choose the right one for your needs.

2. Tensile Strength

The next thing to keep in mind is the tensile strength of the epoxy. If you’re a novice who’s just ventured into DIY, you may not know what tensile strength is. So, let me tell you more about it.

Tensile strength refers to the stress that the surfaces can withstand without breaking apart. It is measured in psi or pounds per square inch. For long-lasting bonds, it is essential to go for epoxies with higher tensile strength.

The tensile strength of epoxy is mentioned in the description of the product. Hence, don’t forget to check the description of the product to know its tensile strength. As already mentioned, going for epoxies with high tensile strength is the wise thing to do.

3. Applicator Style

With a plethora of options on the market, epoxies are available in a variety of applicator styles. Hence, you must pay attention to it before you buy one.

If you’ve been looking for epoxies that you can start using right out of the box, going for a syringe-like applicator is the safest bet. This dispenses resin and hardener in equal amounts so you can mix it thoroughly and start with your task right away.

Meanwhile, you can go for tubes if you’re looking for easy dispensing epoxies. That said, I suggest beginners go for syringe-like applicators while tubes will be perfect for professionals.

Also, do not forget to check whether the epoxy comes with a resealable cap or not. That’s because it will make it easier for you to store the epoxy after use. This will ensure maximum reusability and longer shelf life by preventing it from hardening.

4. Resistance

Even though you’ve considered the tensile strength, don’t forget to check whether they can withstand the elements or not. If you’re looking for epoxies for interior use, this might not be of much importance to you. But, for outdoor applications, you will have to pay attention to this factor.

Hence, while buying epoxy for bonding surfaces, check whether they can withstand high temperatures, heavy rain, and other elements. Only when they tick off all the boxes of resistance, I suggest you go for it.

5. Drying Time

Not to forget, one of the essential things to take into consideration is the drying time of the epoxy. Fast-drying epoxy will dry the surfaces quickly and be ready for use within a few hours. On the other hand, epoxies that come with a longer drying time will take a day or two to completely dry.

Quick drying epoxy is best for those who are in a hurry to complete their tasks. But, if drying time isn’t of much importance, you can opt for anything that suits your requirements. So, weigh your needs before you choose one.

6. Price

Price might not be an important factor for those who can spend more, but it definitely is for those on a budget. Mostly, epoxies come with a shelf-life of two years, so they will last you for plenty of projects.

That said, don’t simply be allured by the cheap price tag of epoxies. For best results, go for branded ones even if you have to pay a few dollars more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Are Respiratory Masks Necessary While Working With Epoxy?

Because of their resistance, durability, and flexibility, epoxies are an excellent choice for bonding plastic. So, if you’re looking to bond pieces of plastics, epoxy is the best bet.

My Final Recommendation

Whether you have to bond DIY plastic models or repair broken pipes of your home, epoxy for plastic is the best bet. Also, using the best epoxy for plastic will ensure strong and durable bonds that can withstand the test of time.
