Best Heated Chicken Waterer

The chicken water can freeze when the temperature falls very low, leaving your birds thirsty, unhealthy, and unhappy.

Owning a small chicken farm myself, I can understand how time-consuming and tiring it is to constantly heat up water and take it to their shed. This tedious job is especially inconvenient considering the freezing weather when you want to stay warm indoors. That is precisely why you need a heated chicken waterer.

These products come with heating elements under them, which prevent the water from freezing. Most of the products are thermostatically controlled, and you will not have to switch them on and off manually.

Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and today I am going to tell you about the best heated chicken waterer options. I have tried to add different types of models so that they meet all kinds of requirements.

Top 5 Heated Chicken Waterer

1. Farm Innovators Model HPF-100

Farm Innovators Model HPF-100

One of my first recommendations is the Farm Innovators Model HPF-100, which will keep water heated and available at all times for poultry use. This product uses power only when needed, making it an efficient choice.

Product Highlights

To begin with, the chicken waterer comes with a three-gallon capacity. It is equipped with a patented design that keeps the water in optimal conditions throughout the year. That said, it will immediately heat the water whenever the temperature falls below zero degrees. And the best part is that it only uses 100 watts of power when required.

Moreover, the product comes with a giant jug with a red-colored base. The heater is built into the base, and a power cord is attached to the unit. All you need to do is plug it into a power unit, and it should function well. Plus, an instruction sheet is provided with the pack, which will tell you how to operate it.

Moving on, the ‘all seasons’ design is patented by the brand making it all the more unique.

What’s There To Like About It?

I found it really easy to fill the container with water. It comes with a large hole on top, which can be used to pour the water inside. You can use a hose or a water jug to fill it up.

Also, it is pretty lightweight and compact, weighing only 2.25 pounds. You can easily lift and move it around even if you are physically weak. I kept it in my farm shed, and it has been working brilliantly well.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

The only problem with this product is the cord length; it measures one and a half feet and is pretty short. So, you will have to keep it near a power outlet, or an extension cord needs to be bought along with the product. However, now that you know this, make arrangements accordingly, and it should not cause any problems.

Pros and Cons of Farm Innovators Model HPF-100

Pros

  • Generous three-gallon capacity
  • Thermostatically controlled
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Comes with a user manual

Cons

  • Short cord length
Farm Innovators Heated Chicken Waterer, Hanging Poultry Water Fountain, 3 Gallon, Red - Plastic Water Dispenser with Heater for Chicks, Chickens, and Livestock
  • Poultry Water Fountain: Keep your chickens and other poultry hydrated all year round with this chicken water heater fountain that makes refills and feeding all the more convenient
  • Feeder Specifications: Heated chicken waterer measures 20” x 13.5” x 13.5” (L x W x H) with a weight of 2.63 lbs; Reservoir has a capacity of 3 gal at a time
  • Durable Material: Durable plastic construction ensures that this electric water heater can withstand year-round weather conditions and long term use for extended periods of feeding time

2. Harris Farms Store Manna Pro Chicken Supplies

Harris Farms Store Manna Pro Chicken Supplies

Up next is a product that consists of a heated metal base that can keep water from freezing. The Harris Farms Store Manna Pro Chicken Supplies will ensure that your poultry animals always have drinking water no matter the season.

Product Highlights

Unlike the Farm Innovators Model HPF-100, this product comes with just the metal base and no jug on top, which puts it in the second position in this list. However, it works wonders with both metal and plastic drinkers, making it a brilliant choice. All you need to do is keep the drinker on top of the base, and it will prevent it from freezing.

Like other reliable models, this product is thermostatically controlled and works with 125 watts of power. It will prevent the water temperature from falling below ten degrees F. When it gets colder, the device will switch on by itself, saving you a lot of effort.

Aside from that, the metal base can be kept outside the house but remember to pick a dry and covered area. You can store it in a shed if there is a power outlet nearby.

What’s There To Like About It?

I was initially skeptical about whether the base will function properly. But then, upon reading the description, I found that it comes with a one-year warranty, and that gave me a lot of confidence.

Additionally, I was able to heat large watering tanks of five gallons too. Considering I have a lot of poultry birds, this proved to be of great help. Finally, no thawing was required, and that saved me a lot of time.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

The metal base provides 16 inches of base space, which means that you can keep large jugs. However, choosing a small jug may prove to be a waste of energy, which some customers have complained about. I will recommend this to anybody who looks after a large poultry farm.

Pros and Cons of Harris Farms Store Manna Pro Chicken Supplies

Pros

  • Prevents water from freezing
  • Can be kept outdoors
  • Comes with a one-year warranty
  • Works with metal and plastic jugs

Cons

  • Not suitable for small jugs

  • HEATED POULTRY DRINKER BASE - Harris Farms Heated Poultry Drinker Base helps prevent your poultry drinker from freezing and is thermostatically controlled for maximum convenience
  • FOR METAL AND PLASTIC DRINKERS - Harris Farms Heated Poultry Drinker Base is safe to use with metal and plastic drinkers or metal founts
  • AUTOMATIC CONTROLS - Heated Drinker Base is thermostatically controlled and has 125 watts of power; Turns on automatically as needed

3. Farm Innovators HB-60P Poultry Drinker

Farm Innovators HB-60P Poultry Drinker

If you have around 15 chickens on the farm, then The Farm Innovators HB-60P Poultry Drinker is going to be an excellent option. It comes with a number of benefits, which allow farm birds to feed directly from the drinker.

Product Highlights

While the Harris Farms Store Manna Pro Chicken Supplies works well for large farms, this option will be a perfect choice for smaller farms. It has drinking nipples placed around the tub, and they are freeze-free.

Apart from that, the water inside will never freeze even at sub-zero temperature, thanks to the heating element concealed below. It is a 60-watt energy-saving unit that is thermostatically controlled. Hence, it will switch on automatically when the temperature falls.

That’s not all; the chicken waterer can be hung or kept on the ground as needed. If you have a slightly raised pen for the chickens, then this can be hung in the middle for them to drink from. Just make sure the three-side mounted nipples are easily accessible for the chickens.

What’s There To Like About It?

I found this product to be easy to work with because of the removable top cover; it allowed me to fill water easily without spilling it around.

Moreover, the bucket is sturdy, and you can rest assured that chickens will not be able to turn it over or damage it. I have had this in the shed for over a year, and it has been working just fine.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

After a month or two of use, I found that the nipples leak at times. In such a case, I will recommend emptying the bucket and adjusting the nipple. You might have to adjust the spring and ensure that the O ring is placed correctly to stop any form of leakage.

Pros and Cons of Farm Innovators HB-60P Poultry Drinker

Pros

  • Thermostatically controlled
  • Uses 60-watt energy
  • Perfect for around 15 chickens
  • Can be hung if needed

Cons

  • Drips sometimes
Farm Innovators Heated Waterer with Lid, 60W Hanging Water Dispenser - 2 Gallon Poultry Drinker Bucket with Red Top for Chickens, Turkeys, and Geese
  • Heated Water Dispenser for Poultry: Keep your chickens, turkey, and geese hydrated all winter long with this 2-gallon heated poultry drinker, designed to keep their water from freezing
  • Temperature Controlled: 60-watt water warmer is thermostatically controlled and operates only when needed, saving you time and electricity
  • Unique Container Design: Farm waterer bucket features a metal handle for hanging, or it can be placed on the ground; For easy refilling, the top is removable

4. Premier Heated Poultry Waterer

Premier Heated Poultry Waterer

Another reliable option that works in all seasons is the Premier Heated Poultry Waterer. It comes with an integrated lid handle, making it very easy to move around as needed. I hung it above the ground, and the chickens drank from it happily.

Product Highlights

When compared to the Farm Innovators HB-60P Poultry Drinker, which had three nipples for 15 birds, this one also has three nipples that can cater to 35 birds. Anyhow, there will be enough water inside the three-gallon jar for all the birds.

Additionally, this product is equipped with a long 16 feet cord, which means you will not need an extender. Plus, the cord is detachable for times when water does not need to be heated.

Also, the built-in thermostat starts heating whenever the temperature falls below 40 degrees F. It will then stop heating when the temperature rises to 60 degrees F. For this job, the product utilizes a 100-watt heating element that is topped off with insulated lid traps. At the same time, these features keep the water warmer and reduce energy costs.

What’s There To Like About It?

I have noticed that birds have a tendency to perch on the top of the feeder, and they could soil the water in the process. However, the manufacturers have attempted to avoid this issue by creating a conical lid. This prevents birds from sitting on top, keeping the water safe at all times.

Further, I was able to open and pour in water very easily; the waterer features a large hole, ensuring that cleaning is not going to be a problem.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

While the hole provided on top is big enough, the lid sometimes gets stuck due to condensation. Therefore, you may need to grip with your feet and use more strength to release the lid so that it can come off easily. Keep this in mind and take the help of a partner in case it gets stuck in winter.

Pros and Cons of Premier Heated Poultry Waterer

Pros

  • Conical shaped lid
  • Nipples on all sides
  • Perfect for 35 birds
  • 16-feet long cord

Cons

  • Lid gets stuck due to condensation
Premier 1 All-Season Heated Poultry Waterer for Chickens and Ducks - 3 Gallon
  • KEEPS WATER UNFROZEN – 100 watt heating element is controlled by a built-in thermostat. Turns on when ambient temperature is below 40°F and off at 60°F. (Note: Water does not get hot, or even lukewarm.) The heating element keeps water from freezing so poultry have access to a source of unfrozen water.
  • QUICK-FILL CAP – During extreme cold, the insulated lid may freeze to the basin. To ensure water can be added even during inclement weather, we've added a hinged cap to the lid which is just the right size for a hose or watering can. Refill without removing the lid!
  • WATER STAYS CLEAN – Nipple drinkers are popular for good reason—water stays clean and fresh until consumed. Birds drink from (3) recessed nipples. Over time, dirt and debris may clog a nipple, causing it to slowly leak. (3) spare nipples are provided with the unit. (Read tips below for training birds new to nipple waterers.)

5. K&H Pet Products Thermo-Poultry Waterer

K&H Pet Products Thermo-Poultry Waterer

My final recommendation is the K&H Pet Products Thermo-Poultry Waterer, which sports a patented revolutionary design. It is a portable device, making it a sought-after choice by many. Read on to know more about its features.

Product Highlights

This product might not have a large opening like the Premier Heated Poultry Waterer, but it does come with a spill-proof cap on the side. This will prevent spillage of water when you are transporting it to a different location.

Like most other reputed models, this one is also thermostatically controlled to prevent water from freezing. As a result, it will ensure that the birds can drink at any point easily.

Moreover, the product is equipped with a filter in a water tray that can easily be removed in seconds. You will not need to drain the water; all you need to do is remove the tray and tap lightly. Then, you can spray water to remove all the debris, and it should be cleaned.

Moving on, the shape is perfect for preventing birds from perching on top of it. It has a conical shape like the previous model, which keeps the top clean.

What’s There To Like About It?

Right off the bat, the no-rust tank caught my attention. My son uses this device in his house during winters, and he too attested to its benefits. Considering how it snows heavily around his place, the moisture can easily make these waterers rust. However, that is not the case with this product as there are no metal parts.

Also, it only uses 60 watts, which makes it an energy-efficient product. After a comparison with the previous product, I noticed that this product might help you save electricity.

What’s There Not To Like About It?

The filling hole is not too big, and it is best to use a small bucket to fill the jug. You can purchase one from your local grocery store and keep it next to the waterer. However, I hope the brand looks into this drawback and provides a larger watering hole on the side.

Pros and Cons of K&H Pet Products Thermo-Poultry Waterer

Pros

  • No-spill cap provided
  • Filtered water trap
  • Carry handle provided
  • BPA free and rust-free

Cons

  • A bucket for filling the waterer required
K&H Pet Products Thermo-Poultry Waterer 2.5gal. (Heated) Gray 60 Watts - No Roost Top & Non-Spill Refill
  • Thermostatically controlled to keep ice free water for chicken all winter long
  • Shape eliminates roosting
  • Spill proof cap for zero water spillage when carrying and replacing onto base.Hand wash the base with mild detergent as needed. Rinse thoroughly

Buyers Guide

By now, you must have understood how these chicken waterers work and the differences in features. However, you might still be confused about making a choice, and that’s why I have prepared this buyer’s guide.

Additionally, my husband has used these devices before, and he told me about some of the major factors to keep in mind while purchasing a chicken waterer. I am going to share the details right here with you.

1. Quantity

Now, you must have seen that there are products that come with jugs of different sizes. Therefore, it is essential that you count the number of chickens before purchasing a waterer. As a rule of thumb, you don’t want to buy a large metal base or a waterer for a few chickens. Doing so would mean wasting money and electricity on larger models that consume more energy.

2. Type

There are various models that only come with an electric heated base. One of my friends preferred this type because she already has a few drinkers in place. But if you are picking an electric heating base, then do make sure that it is compatible with your existing jugs to avoid issues down the line. I have even mentioned a product that can be used with plastic and metal containers, making it a versatile option.

On the other hand, there are models with jugs provided on top. Here, the heating element is generally placed near the bottom securely. These come in various sizes, and you can choose one as needed.

Moving on, I will always recommend purchasing options that are thermostatically controlled. That would mean you can go about your daily job without having to bother about switching the device on and off. An efficient unit will automatically switch on when the temperature falls below a certain point and will switch off when not needed.

3. Handle

A firm handle is often important if you wish to transfer the unit around the shed. Also, some people prefer hanging the waterer so that chickens can reach it easily. Even in this case, the water requires a sturdy handle to which you can attach a metal chain or rope.

4. Plastic Nipples

The presence of plastic nipples will help the chicken drink directly from the water jug. Now, there are small openings placed around the jug from which the chicken can suck water. However, make sure that there are enough of them so that the birds do not end up fighting over them.

Moving on, you would want plastic nipples that do not freeze or leak. If you notice them leaking, open the container and fix the nipple back in place. You will generally find a rubber O ring inside that will prevent water from flowing out. Put that in place, and it should work alright.

If it still leaks, please get the product replaced as the leak could lead to frozen nipples preventing the birds from drinking from them.

5. Ease Of Refilling

I am sure you will not want to spend time refilling the water in freezing weather. And to make the process simpler, you must ensure that the top hole is wide enough. If not, water might spill and then lead to frozen spots around the shed.

So, before purchasing, always check the mouth of the jug and opt for bigger ones. It should be easy to open the lid and get access to it. But know that some lids might get stuck in the cold due to condensation. Hence, be careful and only purchase such a model if you have the physical strength to open the stuck lid.

6. Shape Of Lid

I have noticed that birds often perch on top of these water feeders, and they might then soil the water inside. That would mean a lot of cleaning in the cold, which you want to avoid. I personally prefer conical lids, as they do not allow the bird to sit on top.

7. Cord Length

While looking at all the aspects, do remember to check the length of the cord. If the cord is short, then you will need to attach a power extender, which has to be bought separately. A longer cord is always better as you can keep the device anywhere in the shed.

Moreover, some products come with detachable cords, which can be pulled out during the summer season when heating is not needed. At such times, you can still use the waterer — sans the heating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here, I am going to discuss some of the frequently asked questions so that you have answers to any queries on your mind.

Q1. How high should you hang the chicken waterer?

The chicken waterer should be hung about six inches above the ground so that it is near the beak height, making it perfect for the chickens. However, you may have different-sized birds, and you have to make sure that they can all reach the cup or the plastic nipple.

Q2. How much water does a chicken need in a day?

Large chickens would need about a pint of water every day. Now, you can calculate the jug size based on the number of chickens you have.

Q3. Do I need to fill the chicken waterer every day?

This entirely depends on the number of birds and their drinking capacity. It would be best if you fill it every day, but in some cases, you might even have to fill it twice a day. If you do not wish to do that, consider purchasing a large jug.

My Final Recommendations

Before purchasing a model, ensure that there is a power outlet in the shed or coop. Alternatively, you can buy and install one to avoid any inconvenience.

With this, I am ready to wrap up, but before I end the guide, I will let you in on my favorites so that you can find the best heated chicken waterer. The Farm Innovators Model HPF-100 is my top choice because of its patented design and efficiency.

But if you wish to purchase just the heater base, then Harris Farms Store Manna Pro Chicken Supplies is an ideal option. On the other hand, the Farm Innovators HB-60P Poultry Drinker is equipped with plastic nipples, making it easy to use.

That’s all for now!
