Best Multi-Process Welder: What And How To Buy

Don't you wish welding machines came in a compact, portable box? Well, they do and are known as multi-process welders.

After seeing my friend Jacob easily switching between different types of welders and creating beautiful metal pieces, I was impressed. In fact, the entire process of welding and cutting with a combined device seemed so easy that I was sold. And that too without investing in many expensive machines.

Inspired by Jacob, I decided to invest in a portable welding machine for my husband and myself. Now, there are plenty of repairs and metal works that we can work on, so all that was missing was the perfect welding machine. Hi! I'm Stacy Smith, and if you want to find the best multi-process welder, I would love to share my findings with you all.

Without further ado, let's get into the reviews.

Top 5 Multi-Process Welders

1. Forney 271

Forney 271

The 271 model by Forney comes with three different types of welding devices, and the overall weight is merely 25 pounds. Featuring an all-metal case, this model gives you the freedom to control the welding speed using dials.

Product Highlights

For starters, the option I decided to begin reviewing was the 271 model belonging to the brand Forney. My topmost reason for selecting this product was the three-in-one welder the brand offered - you get a stick, MIG, and DC TIG welder, all in one machine.

One of the highlights this model has to offer is undoubtedly the three-position switch which allows users to change processes quickly. Also, the wire feed speed controls and infinite voltage allow you to dial in the weld accurately.

Moreover, it comes with a 10-inch MIG gun, 8-inch ground clamp, 8-inch electrode holder, 20A - 15A adapter, and an integrated handle with torch wrap for smooth performance. Besides this, it has a .030-inch contact tip and a reassuring 12-month warranty, which is a confirmation that the brand backs their product in case of any damage or mishap.

What's There To Like About It?

One of the things that really impressed me is that users can conveniently switch between different welding devices. I felt it would come in handy for any future project my husband and I decide to take on.

Plus, it's easy enough for beginners to understand and follow. For example, let's say you wish to use the MIG welding machine; it is dialed to carry out flux-core welding but it can be switched to mild steel set up with gas.

What's There Not To Like About It?

Out of all the options I saw online, this one seemed to be one of the better ones. I'd recommend trying it if you are a beginner since it does not have a complicated setup. Having said that, I still felt that the addition of an instruction manual would make it easier to follow instructions for newbies and professionals alike.

Pros and Cons of Forney 271

Product Highlights

Right off the bat, my number one reason for choosing this model was the three-in-one multi-process feature. It is essentially a dual-voltage synergic welder that can be used in many different ways for welding all kinds of metal.

And even though you may use it for any project in and around the house, the product specializes in hardware, car modification, and equipment maintenance. Basically, you can perform MIG, lift TIG, and Stick welding with this compact option. Its synergistic design assists in long-term welding and allows modifications with a simple press of a button.

Similar to the first option, this one too comes with a 10-inch MIG gun, 10-inch electrode holder, cable 35-50 quick connector, and 10-inch earth clamp. Additionally, it has an American gas hose, a .030 and .035-inch contact tip, along with a hammer and brush.

What's There To Like About It?

Now, welding does not have to be a challenge, and I believe anyone should be allowed the freedom to repair metal objects themselves. That's what I like about this option - its planned design makes it a breeze to use without tiring the user even after hours of work.

Another noteworthy feature is its inbuilt safety and protection system that automatically prevents damage by over-currents, over-voltage and overheating. Lastly, the intuitive and synergistic design makes it easy to work on projects of all sizes.

What's There Not To Like About It?

I make it a point to see user reviews and customer feedback for all the products I check. And when I went through the user grievances for this model, I realized that they do not have a return policy or warranty in place. In case there is damage after use, there is no way to get a replacement.

5. Reboot RBM-1300

No products found.

Lastly, the RBM-1300 model by Reboot grabs a spot on my list as the easiest welding option when it comes to parameters. This welding machine supports 2.2 pounds of flux core wire and can carry out carbon steel welding without gas.

Product Highlights

The final product on this list is the latest model by the brand Reboot, which is famous for supplying high-end welding equipment globally. This product encourages users to opt for gasless welding for their DIY metal projects.

Essentially, to make a proper weld, you use a metal brush to clean the area before striking an arc. Let's say you are fixing a filet weld, depending on the material thickness, you will need to keep the gun at a 45-degree angle and weld either vertical or downwards. Similarly, it is best to direct more heat to the bottom piece of the metal when welding a lap joint.

Anyway, the product is environment-friendly because it has a low energy consumption rate, while the switching frequency is beyond the human audio range. This means you can get the job done without causing noise pollution.

Lastly, it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee and a one-year limited warranty.

What's There To Like About It?

There is more than one reason to like this multi-process welder. First of all, it is a gasless portable model weighing only 18 pounds, making it a compact and lightweight option. Secondly, it meets all welding parameters you could hope to have and offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Also, this product makes for an excellent gift for a loved one. If I hadn't already bought a Christmas gift for my husband, I would probably wrap a welder just like this one.

What's There Not To Like About It?

On the plus side, this option is cost-effective and portable but on the flip side, it does not weld thick pieces of metal. If you have a large project that requires working with heavy equipment, I do not think this option would be able to handle it or other heavy-duty jobs.

Pros and Cons of Reboot RBM-1300

Pros

  • Budget-friendly
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Quiet machine
  • One-year limited warranty

Cons

  • Not ideal for large projects

Buyers Guide

To assist you with purchasing the best multi-process welder, I've also added a buyer's guide section. Hopefully, the tips mentioned in this section will help you narrow down the choices and find the perfect welder for your needs.

Here are a few things to keep in mind before buying a multi-process welder:

1. Versatile Use

Think about it this way - if you are going to invest in a welding machine, you might as well go for a versatile option. In fact, this should be a no-brainer because, ultimately, you select a multi-process option for this very reason. For me, it was important that the processes were easy to switch when required.

As far as the multiple functions are concerned, all the best multi-process welders have MIG, Stick, and TIG as a default. Some of them also featured lift TIF, flux-cored, gasless, and a few other welding processes.

2. Display Screen

It's not just a pet peeve of mine; the display screen actually matters when it comes to welders. Essential parameters like wire speed and amperage are visible on the display. Meaning, it's essential to get a clear view of the inputs and outputs to control the functions accurately.

The display will also help you through the initial setup process. After looking at a dozen models, I found that some of them have dual digital displays while others have a color LCD screen.

Now, it doesn't matter which type of screen the welder has; what's important is the user being able to control the features effortlessly. Ultimately, it's a matter of preference because digital and LCD options are equally good, in my opinion.

3. Power Supply

It goes without saying that you should look for a welder with an efficient power supply system. Which system is efficient and which one is not may not be apparent unless you use it. But you can guess by looking at the type of voltage it provides.

So, to be able to cut through dense metals, you will need an output of around 220V. Also, it would be useful to opt for a dual voltage product because you won’t have to depend on one specific outlet for power. That said, keep in mind the unit's circuit should be able to supply enough current for your work.

4. Overload Protection

This is another feature you should be looking for when it comes to buying a new welding machine. Any good brand should have this feature to protect the machine against too much power.

Overload protection is especially important for multi-process welders because of one main reason. Multi-process welders usually have two to three different functions, which you can use by switching from one function to another. The process of switching is especially vulnerable and may cause issues if overload protection is not installed.

In case the overload protection system is not in place, there is a high risk of damage to the welding machine due to excess current or voltage.

5. Portability

If you are looking to purchase a welder for home use, I'd suggest taking a look at the weight of the product to determine its maneuverability. Heavy units are better suited to professional environments like commercial and industrial sites or workshops because there is ample space and requirement for these units.

But choosing the same models for DIY purposes will not make sense. The simple reason is - home users are not equipped to move such heavy devices from place to place, which will hinder any work they take up. This is why I have limited my list to welding models belonging to the lighter category, with the average weight being 30 pounds.

6. Ease Of Use

Now, it may seem strange to spell this out, but a complicated welding machine is something you need to avoid at all costs. The whole point of choosing a multi-process welder is to reduce the amount of stress for the user. What differentiates this device from any regular welder is its ability to change settings quickly for different welding options.

Basically, if the product is too complex to understand or the switch takes too much time, it defeats the purpose of such a device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How Many Processes Can A Multi-Process Welder Handle?

As far as welding is concerned, four major processes are used for any project, which are stick welding, MIG, TIG, and flux-cored arc welding. Most multi-process welders can handle two to three of these functions, with a small minority handling all four.

The most common configurations are TIG with stick combination, MIG plus TIG with stick combination, and TIG with a stick or plasma cutter combo.

Q2. When Can You Use A Multi-Process Welder?

Certain metals are more suitable for specific welding techniques and the same can be said for materials of different thickness. In regular cases, you would need to buy different welding machines that cater to specific materials and metal types. But with a multi-process welder, you get the benefit of two to three different welding techniques bundled into one.

As far as which applications are possible with multi-process welders; there truly will be a long list if I mention them all. But, these welders are best suited for multiple base metal types, different types of welding joints, out of position welding, and indoor as well as outdoor applications.

My Final Recommendation

After going through the list and buyer’s guide, I hope you can decide the best multi-process welder for your projects. While all options are worthy contenders, I’d like to mention two of my favorites. The best welder for me was the 271 model by Forney because it had easy switches, a durable all-metal case, and a 12-month warranty.

Another product I liked was the MIG-205 DS model by YESWELDER. This option had a great automatic safety protection system in place, and the entire welder came at a reasonable price.

Let me know your favorite choice in the comments below. Until next time, take care!
