Best Shoes For Pilots

Feels like a feather and fits like a glove- these are the essential features that all shoes must have, especially the ones worn by pilots.

Airline pilots have a lot to manage, not just flying the plane, which requires an excellent pair of shoes that can provide them comfort all day long while looking refined. My son is a pilot, and I know how beaten up his days are.

Hi! Stacy here, and if you’re wondering about my sudden shift of interest from gardening, here's the story: I had a little spat with Josh (dear husband), who thinks only Italian shoes will be good for our son as they provide comfort and look chic. It’s his Italian heritage speaking; anyway, I had to prove him wrong!

So, I did a little research on comfortable yet classy shoes and came up with this list. Without further ado, let’s see the best shoes for pilots

Top 5 Shoes For Pilots Review

1. Clarks Men's Tilden Cap Oxford Shoe

Clarks Men's Tilden Cap Oxford Shoe

The first product I came across in my search for the best shoes for pilots was Clarks Men's Tilden Cap Oxford Shoes, and I instantly knew this was it! These are affordable, comfortable, and perfect for long hours of flying. I gifted a pair to my son, and he absolutely worships them.

Product Highlights

Clarks Men's Tilden Cap Oxford Shoes are something that every man (not only pilots) who struggles with frequent creases in dress shoes would love. These are made with 100% leather, and what’s leather well-known for? Obviously, for being comfortable, durable, and molding according to an individual. And the same goes for Clarks Men’s Tilden Cap shoes too.

After wearing it a few times, the shoe molds perfectly to the foot and fits like a glove. But the best part about this product isn’t the leather; it’s the ortholite footbed. The ortholite footbed provides excellent impact absorption and makes the shoe wearable for long hours.

Furthermore, the Thermoplastic Elastomers' sole provides excellent traction, flexibility, and durability. But do you know why I liked these soles better? They are environment-friendly, unlike rubber soles

And last but not the least, they are classy. These shoes will look incredible with a refined uniform. Josh, read that again- these aren’t Italian, but they’re chic!

What's There To Like About It?

These Tilden Cap Oxford shoes by Clarks are made of full-grain leather, which is breathable, comfortable, and durable. However, the best thing about them is the ortholite footbed which provides excellent shock absorption and is a great cushion for feet.

You can wear these shoes for hours and not feel your feet burning (it's that cushioning). Another praiseworthy factor is the lightweight thermoplastic sole which doesn’t clink while walking. So, it doesn’t feel heavy and provides great traction.

What's There Not To Like About It?

These are an excellent pair of shoes for our pilots out there, and genuinely, there’s nothing wrong with these aside from - “breaking in.” These shoes might require some break-in time to adjust to your feet, but once they do, you wouldn’t want to try any other pair.

Pros and Cons of Clarks Men's Tilden Cap Oxford Shoe

Pros

  • 100% Leather
  • Shock absorption by ortholite footbed
  • Comfortable and flexible
  • Made with a lightweight thermoplastic sole

Cons

  • Requires more break-in time
Clarks Men's Tilden Cap Oxford Shoe Dark Tan Leather 10.5 W
  • Comfort Features: Ortholite Footbed, Smooth Fabric and PU Linings, Durable TPR Outsole
  • Stretch Gore Panels for a Flexible Fit
  • Premium Full Grain Leather

2. ECCO Men's Helsinki Oxford Shoes

ECCO Men's Helsinki Oxford Shoes

ECCO Men’s Helsinki Oxford Shoes are another star on my list with their elegant and comfortable design. They are made of 100% leather, provide room for your feet to breathe, have perfect arch support, and sport a nice toe box.

Product Highlights

ECCO Men’s Helsinki Oxford Shoes are made of 100% leather which is the first thing anyone looking for comfortable and long-lasting shoes would want. Although I am not a fan of leather myself, one still can’t deny the benefits of owning a good pair of leather shoes.

These shoes feature a seamless moisture-wick lining that nicely hugs the feet. And unlike Clarkes Men's Tilden Cap Oxford shoes which have TPR soles, these have polyurethane soles that resist impact and are wear-resistant. Though both PU and TPR soles are good, the added advantage of TPR soles is that they are inexpensive, unlike the PU ones.

Besides this, the padded insole of these shoes acts as an excellent cushion for feet and absorbs shock while walking. So, you can wear them for long hours, and they won’t give out.

What's There To Like About It?

The first thing that I liked about ECCO Men's Helsinki Oxford Shoes, apart from all other specifications, was that it doesn’t have a metal shank. This means it can pass by the metal detector check at airports, and you don’t have to go through the hassle of removing them before going under the radar.

And being a pilot, you know how important comfort is, and these shoes provide you with that.

What's There Not To Like About It?

Everything about this product was good, and then I looked at the price! Rational consumers would always want maximum benefit at a low cost, but ECCO’s shoes won’t fit in the “affordable category.” So, that’s one thing that I don’t like, and other than that, these shoes aren't water-resistant.

Pros and Cons of ECCO Men's Helsinki Oxford Shoes

Pros

  • Made with 100% leather
  • Moisture-wick lining
  • Durable polyurethane sole
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable with impact resistance soles

Cons

  • Can be a bit expensive
  • Not water-proof
ECCO Men's Helsinki Oxford,Black,39 EU (US Men's 5-5.5 M)
  • Bike-toe oxford with blind-eyelet lacing and double-stitched seams
  • Moisture-wicking lining
  • Direct injected one-component PU outsole with shock point

3. Rockport Men's Leader 2 Bike Slip-on Oxford Shoes

Rockport Men's Leader 2 Bike Slip-on Oxford Shoes

Iron your suit well because the Rockport Men's Leader 2 Bike Slip-on Oxford Shoes won’t like a scruffy attendant! These shoes are excellent for long work hours, and you wouldn’t be tangled in laces as these are slip-on for speedy wear.

Product Highlights

The Rockport Men's Leader 2 Bike Slip-on Oxford Shoes are made with 100% leather and have an elegant appearance. From lace-ups to slip-ons, these shoes are available in two styles, and you choose the one your heart calls to.

The particular charm of these shoes is that they are extremely lightweight as they feature an EVA sole. EVA soles are known for being light, shock-absorbant, and flexible, but unlike PU soles of ECCO Men's Helsinki Oxford Shoes, these aren’t that durable.

Still, they are good if you run a lot, as EVA midsoles are especially preferred by runners. Moreover, these shoes have a moisture-resistant and seamless lining which makes them very popular among people whose feet sweat a lot.

Besides that, Rockport’s leader two bike slip-on shoes have a cushioned insole which is wonderful for comfort and preventing foot fatigue.

What's There To Like About It?

The best thing about Rockport’s shoes is its lightweight outsole which provides excellent traction, flexibility, and comfort. If you have been suffering from the after-effects of low-quality shoes with terrible soles, then this one will answer the woes of your heels and offer much-needed relief.

Moreover, the breathable, antimicrobial, and moisture-wicking lining is perfect for wearing on a long day as you won’t feel discomfort or the urgent need to take off these shoes.

What's There Not To Like About It?

From quality to affordability, these shoes have everything working for them except two aspects which are - water resistance and size discrepancies. These Rockports aren’t water-resistant, and you might feel uncomfortable wearing them in wet weather. Moreover, there have been various instances of size differences among customers, so you might want to order a bigger size or smaller one depending on your foot.

Pros and Cons of Rockport Men's Leader 2 Bike Slip-on Oxford Shoes

Pros

  • Made with 100% leather
  • Has an EVA-sole
  • Lightweight
  • Shock absorption sole
  • Comfortable for long hours

Cons

  • No water-resistance
  • Size discrepancies might occur
Rockport mens Style Leader 2 Bike Slip-on Oxford, Black, 10 X-Wide US

4. Florsheim Men's Medfield Cap Toe Shoes

Florsheim Men's Medfield Cap Toe Shoes

Florsheim Men's Medfield Cap Toe Shoes are a perfect lace-up and low-fit shoe for anyone looking for derby style. They are comfortable, breathable, and true to size, unlike some shoes, which need to be returned due to size issues.

Product Highlights

Aside from its subtle yet classy appearance,  Florsheim Men's Medfield Cap Toe Shoes has a lot of things working in its favor.  For starters, the upper of the shoes are made with genuine leather providing your feet with the much-needed comfort and breathing space.

Also, just like Clarks Men's Tilden Cap Oxford Shoes, they feature Ortholite high rebound foam as an insole that cushions your feet and is great for shock absorption. The ortholite footbed is covered with leather and is removable, which makes this shoe stand out.

However, the real game-changer of these shoes is surely its moisture-wick Suedetec lining which makes sure your feet are comfortable all day long.

Plus, these shoes fit like a glove, are comfortable to wear, and are made with Comfortech outsole. So, you can walk a mile in them and still not feel any difference.

What's There To Like About It?

I really liked the subtle elegance that these derby shoes gave off, although someone with GQ expectations might not like this one. But still, I thought they were good for subtle yet firm support while you perform your pilot duties. Moreover, it's commendable how these shoes are true to size, unlike other shoe brands which need adjustments.

Apart from this, the breathable and moisture-wick linings of these Florsheim’s adds to the overall value of the product.

What's There Not To Like About It?

Everything else about these shoes is good aside from one aspect, and that is - durability. These Florsheim’s aren’t ideal for the long run, and if you don’t polish them or care for them, they will give up on you like my shovels after repeated use!

Besides that, there’s one more aspect that this shoe might lack, and it's the color fading. Some customers have complained about fading color, but note that that might be attributed to improper care.

Pros and Cons of Florsheim Men's Medfield Cap Toe Shoes

Pros

  • Made with 100% leather
  • Ortholite sole for cushioning
  • Breathable and moisture-wick linings
  • Perfect fit

Cons

  • Not durable for the long run
Florsheim mens Medfield Cap Toe Oxford, Cognac, 10 US
  • CLASSIC STYLE: The Medfield features clean lines and a burnished finish and comes in a variety of patterns.
  • QUALITY: The uppers are genuine leather. The linings are breathable, moisture-wicking Suedetec. The sole is durable, flexible rubber.
  • COMFORT: The insole is a fully cushioned, removable footbed with stability heel cup and shock absorbing Ortholite High Rebound Foam.

5. Aerosoles Women's Allowance Ankle Boot

Aerosoles Women's Allowance Ankle Boot

Add a polished look with comfortable yet classy boots! These Aerosoles Women's Allowance Ankle Boots are a lady’s charm and will give you an aero-lift on the aero-plane. They’re perfect for long hours of standing, unlike usual heels, which are a hassle.

Product Highlights

Aerosoles Women's Allowance Ankle Boots are 100% suede, unlike others on the list, which are 100% leather. If you're into a velvety look with the qualities of leather, then nothing beats suede! And the best part? It comes in different colors.

Also, even though these are wedges with 1½ heels, they don't feel uncomfortable at all. These boots are of top-notch quality and feature a padded insole which makes long work hours easy to cope with.

These are a resilient pair of shoes with a rubber sole stitched directly to the upper with Aerosoles Stitch 'N Turn Technology. But that's not all about this product. If you happen to dislike this product on receiving it, then you can get a full refund with no extra shipping charges.

So, my lady pilots out there, if you want comfort with style, then these Aerosoles are it!

What's There To Like About It?

Having personally tried these, I can say that these boots are really comfortable even though they have heels. These Aerosoles are perfectly padded, which cushions the feet well and are good for walking.

Also, the design is sleek and can be paired with any outfit, be it pants or skirts. These shoes go well with everything and have nice traction, too, so you don't have to worry about slipping.

What's There Not To Like About It?

The zipper of these shoes is seriously a pain as it's too rigid and can be uncomfortable at times. Moreover, if worn with thick socks, the zipper might be tough to pull up and might even get damaged soon.

Another thing I must add is that, unlike ECCO’s Helsinki shoes, these boots might be uncomfortable for people with wider feet

Pros and Cons of Aerosoles Women's Allowance Ankle Boot

Pros

  • 100% Suede
  • Moisture-wick and breathable
  • Comfortable with a padded insole
  • Nice traction

Cons

  • Unsuitable for high arched feet
Aerosoles ALLOWANCE Boot
  • Wedge Ankle Bootie
  • Stitch ‘N Turn Technology
  • Memory Foam Footbed

Buyers Guide

There are a number of factors to consider before buying shoes that will meet your aviation needs. Here are some of the aspects that I discovered were best to focus on while buying a quality pair of shoes for pilots.

1. Appearance

Most airlines have their own policies when it comes to dress codes. These policies often narrow down to one thing, and that is - professionalism. So, choosing a shoe that meets the professional standards of the airline you're working under is important.

This means no open-toed sandals or casual shoes like crocs or sneakers that might clash with the uniform. Oxford (or derby style) shoes would be perfect for commercial aviation pilots, unlike general or military aviation pilots who have different requirements and job specifications.

2. Material

After narrowing down the shoe style, the next thing to be considered while buying shoes for pilots is the material of the shoe. 100% leather or suede shoes are best for pilots as they are breathable, durable, and elegant.

If leather shoes are well cared for, then they are a good investment to make, and let’s not forget how elegant and classy they look donned with a professional suit. Besides that, they also mold to feet over time and provide great comfort all day long.

But if you’re not a fan of leather, then there are other options available, like synthetic leather, which isn’t an animal-derived product. It’s a cheaper alternative to leather but not as durable. Based on your preferences, you can go for either.

3. Budget

There are many shoes available in the market, and buying the one that best suits your budget is a rational choice. However, note that the best is usually expensive. And if you have set your eyes on leather shoes, then be ready to spend a few extra bucks, as genuine leather shoes tend to be expensive.

However, if you’re not looking for leather shoes, then there are cheaper options available too. But then the quality will be compromised. So, choose wisely, as buying a nice pair of shoes is nothing less than a valuable investment that will help in carrying out your pilot duties without any discomfort.

4. Comfort And Quality

Comfort and quality are the most important factors that must never be overlooked while buying pilot shoes. As an aviation pilot has multiple duties, the shoes must be made of top-notch material, so they don’t crease or crack due to long work hours or add stress to your feet.

That’s why you should make sure that the toe box is comfortable and the sole is shock-absorbant. If not, it can take a toll on your feet that might lead to problems in the longer run. TPR, PU, and EVA soles are good with excellent shock absorption and are comfortable. However, for better durability, TPR soles are better.

For insoles, leather is perfect as it provides excellent breathability while keeping the foot dry. In addition to that, the inner linings must also be considered while buying shoes as these provide greater comfort and must be moisture-resistant.

As a side note, you should refrain from buying shoes whose soles are fixed with glue and not stitched properly to avoid any disaster.

5. Traction

You wouldn’t want a pair of shoes that gets you rolling on the airport food before reaching the jetliner, right? Thus, to avoid such a tragedy, you must buy shoes that are slip-resistant and offer great traction.

6. Fit

The size and fitting of the shoe matter, just like the material of the shoe. As such, pilot shoes must not be too tight that it suffocates the feet or too loose that it betrays you midway. So, you must find shoes that are true to size and don’t cause discomfort at work

While flying a commercial jetliner, gravitational edema can occur in case of a change in acceleration which can lead to swelling in the feet. In such cases, you wouldn’t want yourself stuck in a pair of shoes that are too tight to breathe in. That’s why a perfect fit is important while buying shoes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What kind of shoes do pilots wear?

Pilots wear high-arch shoes with sufficient padding for comfort. The material of these shoes is breathable, lightweight, and sweat-absorbing to conveniently carry out work during long hours.

Q2. Can pilots wear shoes with metal shanks?

Although wearing shoes with metal shanks is not an issue, it's better to avoid them. Shoes with metal shanks can set off the metal detector at TSA, and you might have to take them off. Thus, to avoid unnecessary hassle, it's better to wear shoes without any metal shanks.

Q3. Why are leather shoes good for pilots?

Leather shoes are durable, comfortable, lightweight, and breathable. That’s why they are preferred by commercial pilots.

My Final Recommendation

That was all about the best shoes for pilots, and I hope this review guide helped you arrive at a conclusive decision. Before ending my analysis, I would like to recommend some of the best shoes that I think will make the cut.

A great pair of shoes will make your work life easier while making sure your feet don’t get stressed out due to long work hours. And that’s what Clarks Men's Tilden Cap Oxford Shoe does. But if you don’t mind spending a little extra, ECCO Men's Helsinki Oxford shoes are a good investment with a nicely padded sole for added comfort.

Rockport Men's Leader 2 Bike Slip-on Oxford shoes are good too, but not on par with Clarks’ or ECCOs’ when it comes to comfort due to size discrepancies.

That said, I’ll be signing off now but stay tuned for more informative articles. Until then, happy shopping!
