Black Sapote: How to Plant, Grow, and Harvest

The black sapote is a type of fruit tree that can be found in Central America and the Caribbean. It has a dark skin with orange flesh inside. If you are interested in growing one, it needs at least six hours of sunlight per day and should be planted about two feet from each other so they grow densely together. The tree produces fruit after three years but will take another four to produce more than one harvest annually. In this blog post I'll tell you how to plant, grow, and harvest your black sapote trees!

How to Plant Black Sapote Trees

Black sapote trees need around six hours of sunlight per day, so make sure you plant them in a sunny spot. They also thrive in dry climates, making them more tolerant to drought than other fruit trees. The black sapote tree should be planted about two or three feet from each other for maximum density. Be patient though, because it takes the plants about three years to produce fruit and at least four years for it to produce enough fruit for more than one harvest annually.

How to Grow Black Sapote Trees

A common fertilizer for these types of trees is an organic one with a 20 to 30% source of nitrogen. The tree needs 1/4 pound (113 g) every 6 to 8 weeks during the first year, and gradually increased to 0.5, 0.75, and 1 pound (227 g, 341 g, 454 g) as it grows larger. You should also use four to six minor element foliar sprays from April to September.

Once black sapote trees are new, they should be watered every other day for the first week or so. The first two months of growth, they should be watered at least once a week. As the rainy season comes, irrigation may be reduced or stopped. If there is prolonged drought (e.g., 5 days with little to no rainfall), then newly planted and young black sapote trees (first 3 years) should be watered once per week.

How to Harvest Black Sapote

Black sapote trees can take up to five years to harvest. However, when harvesting black sapote trees, be careful not to damage the branches and leaves. The fruit will not be ready until it dries and falls off the tree naturally. If you need to shake the fruit off, do so gently and store them in a cool dry place until they are ready.

Honestly this type of tree is pretty easy to grow so long as it gets enough sun, water, and fertilizer. That being said I don't particularly care for its fruit but feel free to try it out yourself!

What does Black Sapote Taste Like

Black sapote tastes like a combination of an apple, banana, and chocolate.

How to Store Black Sapote

If you pick the fruit and need to store it, cut off both ends of the fruit and peel the skin. The fruit can be stored for about a week in the refrigerator in a brown box filled with sawdust (hay).

What is Black Sapote Used For

The black sapote has many common uses that we are going to go over in this blog post! One of these uses is for the skin. Black sapote is used as an astringent, which helps tighten and soothe dry skin. It can also be used to clear up acne and other types of skin conditions.
