Have you always wanted to grow blackcurrants but have never known how? This blog post is for you. Blackcurrant plants are easy to care for and produce a delicious fruit that can be used in many different recipes. I'll show you everything from planting your blackcurrant plant, growing it successfully, and harvesting the berry.

How to Plant a Blackcurrant Bush

Plant your blackcurrant bush in an open and sunny site. Prepare the ground by digging a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots of your fruit bush. Sprinkle a handful of fertilizer in the hole and fork it into the soil. Spread the roots of the blackcurrant bush out evenly across the hole area, teasing them out carefully. Fill in around the roots with soil, firming it down with your foot as you go. Water well to help settle down soil around plant’s roots.

How to Grow a Blackcurrant Bush

Water your blackcurrant bush in the spring, when new growth begins, and during periods of extended dry weather. Blackcurrants need at least a teaspoon of water every day. Mulch around your plant to help conserve water. Weeds should be pulled out carefully, as they can compete with blackcurrant shrubs for nutrients. Blackcurrant plants are disease-prone and need extra care during the rainy season – make sure you clean up any fallen leaves to stop diseases from spreading.

Another thing you should do is stay on top of blackcurrant vine weevil or currant worms. These pests suck the juice from plants and spread bacterial infections, so make sure you remove them immediately. Watch for cane borers too – these insects bore into the canes and damage fruit. Destroy any damaged or diseased branches right away to prevent them from spreading further.

How to Harvest Blackcurrant Berries

Harvest blackcurrant berries by cutting trusses of currants with a sharp kitchen knife or long scissors. Pick the fruit up from the stem and make sure that it is fully ripe - this can be determined by the color of the fruit. If you have a blackcurrant bush that is overgrown, prune it back to avoid fruit wastage.

What do Blackcurrant Berries Taste Like

The taste of blackcurrant berries is earthy, with a sour tang to it. They are a bit more acidic than other dark berries and are not very sweet. Dried black currants, however, are sweet.

How to Store Blackcurrant Berries

Refrigeration is the best option. When you know you can consume black currants within a few days, keeping them in the pantry would work, but if you can't, they need to be refrigerated. When these currants are cooled properly and later then refrigerated, they last for up to two weeks.

When it comes to freezing blackcurrants, you should go about it in the following way:

-tip the berries onto a tray and remove any stems or unripe or damaged berries and leaves

-line a baking tray with baking parchment and arrange the berries on top in a single layer

-freeze until hard

-store in an airtight container in the freezer
