Can You Spray Roundup On Wet Grass

I have been gardening for a long time now, and one question that I get asked frequently is whether herbicides can be sprayed on wet grass.

While the general understanding is that water and herbicides (like Roundup) don’t complement each other, there are some important things to keep in mind. So, if you’re wondering, “can you spray Roundup on wet grass?” then read on.

Can You Spray Roundup On Wet Grass?

Most gardeners and lawn-enthusiasts stick by the unwritten rule that plant-care products like herbicides or fertilizers should be sprayed on dry grass blades. In hindsight, this ensures that the product doesn’t evaporate with the existing moisture or run off the surface.

However, one of the main advantages of Roundup is its quick absorbing-formula, which makes it suitable for application in different weather conditions. Moreover, the product takes approximately 30 minutes to penetrate the grass blades. And once this period is over, you can rest assured it won’t evaporate or run off even if there’s rain.

That said, it’s never a good idea to spray the grass with Roundup just before the rain, as the product will invariably run off the surface of the grass blades. Make sure that it can sit on the grass for at least the recommended period (if not more) before they get drenched in water. Likewise, if you’re planning to spray the product post-rain, you should wait till there are no visible water droplets on the grass.

Both these techniques are suitable for ensuring that the product settles nicely on the surface of the plant.

What Is The Best Time To Spray Roundup On Grass?

I’d say that the best time to spray roundup is during the later hours of the morning, just before all the dew has evaporated from the grass.

But if you live in colder climates, you might want to wait till the morning or around noon since the heavy morning dew usually takes longer to evaporate. Besides, plant growth picks up speed as the sun shines bright, making it the best time for the herbicide to do its job.

One important thing to remember is that you should refrain from spraying the product at night, as the glyphosate content in its formula becomes ineffective after sundown. Apart from that, wait for at least a couple of weeks before employing the second round of Roundup spraying. Remember that using it too frequently can kill the healthy grass blades alongside the unwanted weeds.

Final Words

The best way to apply Roundup is to spray it on the required areas of the lawn till the grass blades are fully wet (but they shouldn’t be dripping).

However, don’t use herbicides when the plant grows actively during the summer and spring months. Otherwise, the healthy plants may “suck in’’ all the glyphosate towards the center, eventually killing the roots.

And if you think that you have sprayed too much Roundup on the other plants or grass blades, rinse them off immediately with plain water.
