As a gardener, I have always wanted the best for my green babies.
So, when I started my bonsai journey, I wasn’t very keen on getting store-bought bonsai soil. And that’s when my friend told me how cactus soil can help my bonsai trees grow to their full potential and how I can prepare the mix at home.
That’s why today, I’ll help you answer the question - “Can you use cactus oil for bonsai?” Let’s begin, then!
1. Effective Water Drainage
One of the main reasons cactus soil is preferred for bonsai is its drainage property. In the absence of excessive organic compounds in this soil, the chances of root rot in your bonsai trees become very low. Considering that bonsai trees take longer to heal than other plants, you’d want to have this advantage by your side.
2. Proper Water Retention
Both water drainage and retention are important factors to consider to ensure that your bonsai stays in the pink of health. And this is another area where cactus soil gets high scores from me.
Many other types of soil are highly likely to become concentrated or break down over time with constant exposure to moisture. However, the water retention capacity of cactus soil remains the same throughout. This means that you don’t have to worry about the roots of the tree becoming dehydrated from lack of water or “drowning” in too much water.
In fact, many people prefer using cactus soil for their outdoor bonsai trees since they are more likely to get dehydrated under the sun.
3. Adequately Spacious
The thing I like the most about cactus soil is the porosity on offer. In other words, this type of soil has enough space between the particles, allowing the roots of the bonsai to grow and flourish properly. Remember that stunted root growth will invariably hinder the overall development of the plant.
4. Ideal For Temperate Climate
Cactus soil is well suited to support the growth of bonsai and other plants in temperate climates, as it can mimic the conditions of the soil in which the plant originally grows.
