Can You Wear Turf Shoes On Gym Floor

Are you a soccer fan who likes to play the field from time to time? Then you must own a nice pair of turf shoes.

I got a pair back in my athletic days, but now the thing is, I don’t go out much to play. My shoes are still in top-notch condition because I haven’t worn them often, and honestly, it feels like such a waste.

I was speculating if I could put them to better use, you know, like wearing them to hiking trips or simply to the gym.

So, I set out to experiment and jogged around the block, on the concrete sidewalk wearing my turf shoes. I also wore them to the gym for a heavy workout session. Want to know how that went? Oh well, let’s just say my knees weren’t so happy for the next day or two.

Hello guys! It’s me, Stacy Smith, and I am back with yet another handy guide on a frequently occurring dilemma - can you wear turf shoes on gym floor? If you’ve been wondering about this question, read my guide to know all the answers.

Let’s get right into it!

What Are Turf Shoes?

Before moving on to the bigger question, let’s talk a little about what turf shoes actually are. In simple words, turf shoes are a type of footwear with a rugged and durable rubber outsole worn during soccer training. It has an intricate pattern or tiny studs of rubber on the outsole that improves grip and traction on natural or turf fields.

These sturdy pairs of shoes are designed with one main aim, which is to provide you with the maximum possible mobility while you are out there, playing. That’s why they have comfortable low-top height and extremely flexible soles, with minimum possible stiffness in the structure.

Furthermore, they have dozens of closely spaced rubber protrusions that increase the surface area of the sole and allow a firm grip on the turf. You’ll experience a massive difference in traction while wearing turf shoes as opposed to regular sports shoes.

Can You Wear Turf Shoes On Gym Floor?

Yes, you can wear turf shoes on the gym floor. But the question isn’t about “can you” as much as it is about “should you?” And the answer to that is no; you most probably should not wear turf shoes to the gym.

First and foremost, if you go to a well-reputed high-end gym with a strict code of conduct and management policies, the authorities won’t allow you to wear turf shoes.

It is tempting to switch to this footwear since sports shoes end up wearing out in a few months’ time. But turf shoes are not designed to be worn on hard surfaces, and you should stick to that principle.

Do you know what turf actually is? It is the term used for referring to the grass and the soil held together by its roots. And as the name suggests, turf shoes are engineered for wearing on turf only.

No doubt they have flexible and rugged outsoles, but they also have very thin cushioning at the base since soil and grass are already soft. As a result, the heels do not need extra support as they do on flat and hard surfaces.

Additionally, the rubber studs present on the outsoles provide extra grip only on soft ground. They do not serve any benefit on hard and solid surfaces like gym floors, so it’s not really worth it.

Plus, the lack of soft padding and cushioning on the shoe base is not good for the feet and increases the chances of injury. Speaking from personal experience, my joints hurt for the next two to three days because of this little stunt.

Where Can You Wear Turf Shoes?

Apart from turf, you can wear these shoes only on a handful of surfaces. You can wear turf shoes on grassy playgrounds, artificial turf, plowed fields, and synthetic racetracks.

So, I don’t really recommend investing in a pair if you are not into sports.

Turf Shoes Vs. Gym Shoes

You might get a little confused if you are new to all this sports shoe business. No worries, I’ll break down the major difference between gym shoes and turf shoes for you.

Gym shoes are basically for indoor purposes and are specially designed for indoorsy floorings, which are mostly vinyl, concrete, ceramic, or carpet tuff. This footwear generally has a rubber sole with tiny grooves and ridges for maximum contact with the surface.

Turf shoes, on the other hand, are designed explicitly for outdoor pitches. They have little spikes on their outsoles which are significantly shorter than soccer shoes’ spikes. They are also blunt-ended and are meant to provide extra grip on playgrounds.

I do not advise wearing turf shoes on the gym floor because of the following reasons:

  1. They do not have a supportive base
  2. The rubber studs do not serve good on the hard floor and will hurt your feet
  3. There is an increased chance of getting injured, and your limbs and joints will most likely hurt after working out.

Another major difference between these two is that turf shoes are made for rough outdoor playing and, therefore, are composed of strong materials. Indoor games, on the other hand, are subtle and do not involve much roughhousing. Hence, gym shoes need not be too tough and are made using a variety of materials.
