Do CPAP Machines Increase Blood Oxygen

CPAP machines can be lifesavers when it comes to dealing with sleep apnea and other problems with the lungs.

My mother was suffering from obstructive sleep apnea when her doctor explained to me what a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine is and how it may help deal with the condition. And I got one almost immediately.

The nurse who came in daily to take care of her showed me how to use it. At the same time, I decided to read up more about its operation and advantages. And it was then when I found out that the machine is used for a number of purposes.

It has allowed me to sleep peacefully through the night without having to sit by my mother, as it helped her breathe comfortably by freeing her airways. But one question that keeps cropping up is: do CPAP machines increase blood oxygen?

Hi! I am Stacy Smith, and today, I will be answering all your queries about it. I have also discussed the benefits of using the device and listed down some of the cons to be considered.

So, dive in to know all about them.

What Is The Function Of A CPAP Machine?

Sleep apnea can cause a lot of irregularities in breathing during sleep. It is a condition where you may face difficulty in breathing at night, which can disrupt sleep and can also have fatal consequences. However, a CPAP machine can help in dealing with these problems.

Simply put, it ensures a steady and healthy flow of air pressure, which prevents airway blockages. Hence, it aids the normal breathing process.

Now, if you are wondering whether CPAP machines can increase the blood oxygen, then I will say yes. It will help in maintaining the air pressure, ensuring that you can take in oxygen constantly. This will normalize the oxygen level in your blood, and you can sleep peacefully.

Moreover, CPAP machines can help in removing all mucus from the air passage and reduce any kind of swelling inside the nose. People who suffer from fragmented sleep will benefit from this, as there will be no disruptions in breathing.

Other than that, you should know that there are primarily 3 kinds of CPAP masks, which are nasal masks, nasal pillow masks, and full masks. Each of them has different benefits, so your doctor will suggest one based on your condition.

Advantage Of Using A CPAP Machine

CPAP machines are known to provide oxygen throughout the night, and hence, they will allow the patient to sleep well. It can provide continuous oxygen to the blood, helping the body fight other ailments in the process.

For your better understanding, I have briefly listed the benefits of using a CPAP machine in the following section. They are:

  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Eliminates a constant feeling of drowsiness or tiredness
  • Helps in quick recovery from ailments
  • Improves sleep quality
  • Regulates glucose and cholesterol levels
  • Reduces the chances of a heart attack and a stroke

However, remember that the machine can have some side effects as well. For instance, it may make some people feel anxious or claustrophobic, which may in turn, cause discomfort to hinder their sleep.

Furthermore, it may lead to nosebleeds or dry mouths at certain points in time. The skin on your face can also get irritated or have sores, but it will all get better once your body has the right level of oxygen.

Can Sleep Apnea Reduce Oxygen Level?

When my mother had sleep apnea, her doctor explained why her oxygen level kept falling (in the absence of a CPAP machine) and I am going to tell you about it.

When a person is sitting down or walking, he or she can breathe normally as the muscles near the airways and the tongue remain stiff. Hence, the air passage is left open to facilitate proper and adequate intake of air (and oxygen).

However, when you are sleeping, you would not have any control over the tongue, which may then collapse during the breathing process. This can especially happen if you sleep on your back, leading to disruptions in the airflow. Now, people who are healthy may not experience this, but it’s a common occurrence for sleep apnea-affected patients.

Moreover, if you have obstructive sleep apnea, then there are more chances of the airways getting blocked because of the tongue, causing shallow breaths (hypopnea). Less air could mean less oxygen and more carbon dioxide in the blood. Your breathing might get obstructed- so much so that you may not receive any oxygen for about a minute (apnea).

Can You Add Oxygen To CPAP?

It is possible to add oxygen to the CPAP machine but only if your doctor suggests so. This process is generally advised for those patients who are suffering from lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, and other respiratory problems. It is also administered to people who have depleted oxygen levels in their blood.

So, in case the doctor recommends it, you will need an oxygen concentrator, which comes equipped with a supply line. It will either be connected to the CPAP mask or the CPAP machine. In either case, seek help from a medical professional to understand the right way of connecting it.

Final Words

Many users have complained that CPAP machines are not comfortable to put on, and it can lead to a claustrophobic feeling.

However, it can save lives at the end of the day, so you can definitely consult your doctor to help reduce such side effects. Also, remember that maintaining necessary precautions and continuing treatments are the two best ways to combat the illness.

Then a day will come when you can finally give up the CPAP machine and go to sleep without it. At the same time, eat well and take your medicines on time, and you should be back to normal within a few months.

Signing off with best wishes!
