E71T GS Vs E71T 11

People may know me as a gardening enthusiast, but I'm no slouch on DIY tasks either.

In fact, I have been working on numerous household projects ever since I was a kid, first with my father and later with my husband. As a result, I know my way around different types of cutting or welding techniques.

Speaking of welding, I often have to work on metal pieces when I'm doing gardening renovations. But over the years, the cost of stick welding has gone up, which put me in a pickle.

It has been a while now that I’m trying to find an affordable way to work on steel; sadly, I ended up spending most of my savings.

Sensing my difficulty, my husband suggested that I change my methods and try a hand at flux-cored welding. I was unsure at first, but after working with the E71T GS and the E71T 11 welding wires, I had no doubt that this technique would prove productive and cost-effective.

Now, the only question was which wire to use. Hi! I'm Stacy Smith, and if you want to know how I made a decision, this guide is for you.

E71T GS Vs. E71T 11

Need For Welding Wires

Irrespective of the type of wire, the primary purpose remains the same - to reinforce the joint. Hence, welding provides stability, allowing you to handle both small and large-scale tasks with aplomb.

What Is Flux-Cored Welding?

Before explaining the welding techniques of these two wires, let me tell you about flux-cored welding. You must note that it's a continuous wire welding process, during which you'll have to feed a hollow wire electrode into the weld joint with a welding gun.

It's an extremely efficient technique as it eliminates the need to use a separate shielding gas, thereby protecting the weld pool from contamination. Alternatively, the designers have infused a flux compound with the wire that produces gas to keep the material safe.

  • Great Welding Performance: Smooth arc action and High feedability, you will love the less splatter when do your welding project. The flux filling acts as a shielding agent to create beautiful and clean welds. Perfect for Professional welder, metalworking hobbyist, or DIY enthusiast.
  • Self shielded gasless mig welding wire works well on rusty, dirty and painted Material, also strong resistant to base material oil pollution, perfect for use outdoors, high-altitude, and other different environments.

Having learned about flux-cored welding, it's time to look at the two most common welding wires used by professionals and DIYers alike. In the debate of E71T GS Vs. E71T 11 welding wires, the former is used for single-pass welding while the latter is also suitable for multi-pass welding.

So, depending on your purpose, it's possible to make an informed decision. That said, the E71T GS works well with mild steel, allowing you to use a MIG welder or a flux-core without any hassle.

What's more, it doesn't require a shielding gas to remove dirt and debris, making it convenient to carry the wire without needing a gas tank. Needless to say, I was able to use it for outdoor tasks, enjoying the beaded performance of the wire.

Interestingly, if you work in a windy area, there's no need to install a windshield. Its design ensures that you get the best results while also making it easy to clean the workspace.

Now, my main concern was whether it would do a good job when fusing galvanized steel. I have found on previous occasions that the flux eats away at the zinc; however, I faced zero issues with this wire.

This is because it comes with an aluminum coating for added protection, while the sturdy construction lets you penetrate even thick metals. All you need to do is use a straight polarity to enjoy its full benefits.

The counterpart to the previous welding wire is the E71T 11, which proves suitable for various applications like welding carbon steel. However, it may not be the best option for operating on thick metals, like those having a thickness greater than ¾ inches.

Also, you will find several similarities between the two welding wires. For instance, it doesn't require a gas tank as there is no need for shielding gas. Hence, the wire ensures that the natural composition of the metal remains intact, making it ideal for both multi-pass and single-pass welding.

Not to mention, you will need to use a straight polarity. Naturally, its major area of use lies in welding machinery parts, meaning you can work on galvanized steel

Just remember to find an open space; I failed to notice that the wire lacks fluoride compounds, leading to zinc oxide formation, which resulted in breathing difficulties.

But with enough air circulation, you should be fine, so keep the windows open. For added safety, I suggest wearing a mask to prevent the metal fumes from affecting your health.

Another interesting feature is the fact that it's low-maintenance and I don't have to spend much time cleaning the work area. And especially pleasing is the fact that slag removal is easy, especially while using a CV power source which guarantees unmatched arc performance.

Making A Decision

Drum rolls, please!  Now, it's time to choose the best welding wire for your needs.

It's evident from the previous sections that there are certain projects where one unit gets precedence over the other. For example, for heavy-duty tasks, the E71T GS ranks higher, thanks to its fantastic penetrative properties and high durability, despite being a single-pass welder.

On the other hand, there is no matching the E71T 11 on intricate tasks, involving thin metal pieces. But that's not to say it's not durable, and keeping the wire away from moisture will increase its lifespan.

Long story short, it's challenging to choose one over the other, and it boils down to the kind of project you're working on. In fact, you could purchase both, thanks to their affordable pricing, to quickly complete most tasks with ease.

Final Words

Hopefully, I was able to explain the intricacies of welding, especially when using the E71T GS and E71t 11 units.

I’ll leave you with this tip: carry out weekly maintenance and store the wires in a dry place for much-needed longevity. I’ll be signing off now; I need to fix the lawnmower handle with my new welder.

Take care, bye!
