How Do I Find Out What Year My Snowblower Is

In case your city sees a lot of snow, chances are you have a snowblower that has been in the family for decades.

But, it can become pretty difficult to figure out the age of a machine just by looking at it. Let me tell you that there are ways to determine the year a snowblower was manufactured in, so keep reading to know all about it!

How Do You Find Out What Year A Snowblower Is

If you are looking for used snowblowers, then it is essential to find the age. Also, if you want to get an old snowblower serviced from a local shop, they might ask for the manufacturing date.

In most cases even when the bill is lost after a few years, the serial number can help you out. Let me break down this information about serial numbers on the basis of the top brands that make snowblowers.

1. MTD Machines

If you have MTD-made snowblowers, then consider the first five letters and alphabets to know the build date. The first character will tell you the decade, and the second will tell you the month. Months are represented by letters A to L, which stand for January to December.

Furthermore, the next two numbers will tell you about the day in the month, while the last letter refers to the year that the snowblower was made.

2. Husqvarna Models

It is pretty easy to determine the age of a Husqvarna machine as the first six letters refer to the month, date, and year in MMDDYY format.

3. Craftsman Models

For machines made by Murray, you will generally get a code consisting of four digits, which will help in identifying the right model. The first digit will tell you the year, considering you already know which decade the machine was manufactured in. Then the last three digits will tell you the date.

For example, if the number is 4250, then the year is mostly 1994, and it was manufactured on the 250th day of that year.

You can also check the back of the snow blower housing to see if the decal is still present. It should have the manufacturing date mentioned right below the serial number.

If you do not find it, then note down the serial number and go to a Sears store. Tell them the serial number, and they should be able to find the year of manufacturing.

How Do You Find The Serial Number Of Your Snowblower?

You will find it mentioned on the box in which the snowblower comes in. However, if it is an old snowblower without a box, then you will have to look at the body of the unit as the number is usually stamped on it.

I will recommend checking on the left of the valve cover where the metal shield is placed below the muddler. It can also be stamped on the cylinder shield, so remember to check there as well. The exact location depends on the brand that manufactures it.

Why Is It Important For You To Know The Year Of Manufacture?

I had decided to purchase a second-hand snowblower for myself when I realized how important the manufacturing date was. The price you’re paying should justify the quality of the product, and I would not want to pay the same for a ten-year-old model v/s a three-year-old model. So, I will always recommend checking the manufacturing date before purchasing.

Final Words

If you are still unable to determine the year, you can easily call up customer care. They will ask for the serial number, and then they can tell you about the year of manufacture.

Also, if you cannot locate the serial number, then let them know, and they will assist you. You can check out YouTube videos for your model to locate the number and let the customer representatives know about it to get their help.

I hope I have been able to answer your question, “how do I find out what year my snowblower is manufactured in?”. And I will always tell you to check the year of manufacture before purchasing a second-hand model so that you can determine the durability of the unit.

Go over to your snowblower and follow the steps I have mentioned above to find out how old it is. I’ll see you next time, bye!
