Required Supplies
Dig up the area around the base of the tree to expose the roots. Now, cover them up with at least a foot of mulch, but you may need more depending on the girth of the tree. This suffocates the roots as well as restricts them from transporting water and nutrients to the rest of the tree.
The next step is to make gashes and cuts on the trunk of the tree to expose its insides. Make sure to get some deep cuts, or you may even drill holes at an angle towards the center of the tree. One-inch deep cuts work the best to transfer the herbicide into the tree quite fast.
Take a glyphosate-based or triclopyr-based herbicide in a spray bottle and apply it into the gashes and cuts. The tree would quickly absorb the chemical and die within a few days.
After a week or so, check on the tree and proceed with removal if it's dead, and don’t forget to tidy up the fence line.
