How Far From The Wall Should A Closet Rod Be

Are clothes your most prized possession?

Well, they surely are mine, and that’s why it is my priority to keep them prim and proper. But if the closet rod isn’t positioned tactfully, your clothes can collect dust and cobwebs from the back wall.

So, do you want to know the answer to the question “how far from the wall should a closet rod be?” Keep reading then!

How Far From The Wall Should A Closet Rod Be

Since standard closets are 24 inches deep, the closet rod should be placed exactly in the middle. Meaning, it should be at least 12 inches away from the wall to conveniently hang your clothes.

Things To Consider

It’s essential to consider a few factors to determine the space between your wall and the closet rod. So, here’s what you should look into:

1. What Are The Dimensions Of Your Closet?

The closet dimensions can vary if yours is custom-made. Therefore, before getting a closet rod, measure your cupboard well and jot down its length, breadth, and height. There’s no point in buying a rod without being a hundred percent sure of your closet size.

Generally speaking, your closet should be at least 24 inches deep to keep the clothes clear from the back wall. However, if your sole intention is to store bulky clothing items like blazers or fur coats, keep the depth at least 28 inches to accommodate them.

Talking about the lower end, a cupboard shallower than 22 inches won’t be viable, so avoid getting it.

2. What Are The Dimensions Of Your Closet Rod?

A closet rod shouldn’t be thicker than two or three inches so that you can hang standard-sized hangers on it without any hiccups. However, some people prefer it to be wider to avoid installing support brackets if their closet has a large width.

3. How Much Space Is Required For Hangers?

Preferably, you shouldn’t buy hangers before knowing the depth of the closet rod. But if you have some old ones that you don’t want to throw away, measure them to get an idea of where the rod should be placed.

Furthermore, wide hangers are important if you will be hanging heavy clothes or designer pieces in the closet, so the distance of the rod from the wall will vary accordingly.

Important Tip If Your Closet Is Shallow

If your closet is shallow and won’t accommodate all your belongings, then I suggest adding an extender rod and some shelf dividers to maximize the space. Installing shelf baskets is also a great idea, which is quite underrated these days.

Final Words

On that note, I’ve reached the end of my brief guide. The bottom line is that a 12-inch deep rod in a standard 24-inch closet is the way to go. But you might need more space for storing coats and heavy clothing.

Until next time, take care!
