How Heavy Is Granite Per Square Foot

The combination of durability and elegance makes granite one of the most preferred materials for building surfaces.

When I was building a kitchen countertop for my new home, I learned a lot about it. And one such thing that a lot of DIYers would like to know is how heavy is granite per square foot?

So, dive in to know more!

How Much Does Granite Per Square Foot Weigh?

Since granite has different thickness variations, the weight will also vary accordingly. For example, the ¾-inch thick granite usually weighs nearly 12 pounds per square foot, while the 1 and ¼-inch one weighs somewhere near 18 pounds per square foot.

Aside from that, a 2-inch thick granite slab can weigh nearly 20 pounds per square foot.

From what I have seen, the 3/4-inch and ¼-inch thicknesses are the two most commonly found and used types for various projects, including kitchen countertops. And although you may find thicker slabs, they are generally used rarely and cost more.

How Much Do Granite Countertops Weigh?

As you may have already figured out, the exact weight of a granite countertop will depend on the type of granite it’s made of. I have a small countertop in my kitchen, which weighs nearly 55 pounds. Although they may weigh more in your case, the smaller ones don’t usually extend beyond 80 to 85 pounds.

On the other hand, the larger countertops can weigh a few hundred pounds. You can easily calculate the weight of the countertop once you know the thickness of the slab and the length and width of the installed surface.

For instance, if the width and length of your kitchen countertop are 2 feet and 5 feet, respectively, and it’s made from a ¾-inch thick granite slab, then its weight will be 12X10 or 120 pounds.

What Is The Best Way To Carry Granite Slabs?

I’d always recommend carrying the slabs vertically (and not horizontally), which will help you avoid breaking them in the middle. Alternatively, you can place them on the edge of an A-frame rack- much like you’d do for glass.

Another thing to keep in mind while carrying the slabs by hand is not to carry more than two of them at a time and stacking them across the joints. This helps distribute the weight evenly so that you don’t get disbalanced due to the load.

I’d also suggest wearing thick gloves to protect your hands from cuts or bruises from the edges. However, make sure that the material of the gloves doesn’t interfere with your grip. Otherwise, you may end up dropping them, damaging both the granite and the surface they fall on.

Final Words

Granite is a heavy material that should always be transported by professionals, using proper tools or equipment. So, if you don’t feel confident enough about carrying that much load, don’t hesitate to call the professionals.

Aside from that, ensure carrying only the weight that feels completely comfortable, even if that means carrying only one slab at a time. And I will see you next time. Goodbye!
