The ideal height of a shelf closet varies according to the things you store. It would be rather inconvenient if you have to stand on a stool to pick up your items from the shelf. So, I recommend having its height between 84 inches and 87 inches from the floor surface. 

In the case of a smaller closet, you can install a shelf directly above the rod. And the rod needs to be about 68 inches above the floor.
