From my experience, I can say that roses last for more than a week and even longer if you follow proper flower care rules. Basic flower care will significantly enhance the lifespan of your roses. 

However, there are a few other factors that determine how long your roses will last. These are primarily the type of roses you have, the amount of water they have received after being cut, and the health of the plant from which you extracted them.

Roses are one of the hardier flowers and can last a few hours without water after plucking. However, environmental factors like heat and humidity play a significant role in determining how long they survive. 

I would suggest that the essential thing to do after cutting roses from plants is to put them in water to make them live longer. 

Moreover, I have received questions from many fellow gardening enthusiasts about how to effectively save the petals for potpourri. After quite a few hit and trial attempts, I have seen that it is not too difficult to make the petals last for long. 

Without any moderation, the petals usually last for around 3-4 days. However, for the purpose of potpourri and to preserve the smell, the best solution is to dry up the petals to make them last longer. 

Dried rose petals are great for saving memories or as keepsakes. They are also a great option for putting in DIY bath bombs.

How To Make The Roses Last Longer?

Making cut roses last longer is not as difficult a task as it might seem. I have tried a few things after my talk with Josephine. And in this section, I will divulge some of the techniques that have worked the best for me!

1. Changing The Vase Water Regularly

The simplest and the most efficient step is ensuring that your much-loved roses are put in fresh water. To make this happen, all you need to do is to change the water regularly in the vase in which you put the flowers. 

Regularly does not mean every day, and changing it every few days is good enough! This process is essential to keep your flowers and vase clean and to ensure that there is no growth of harmful bacteria. Stale water becomes a hub for bacteria and makes your flowers rot faster. 

So, to make sure that the life of the roses is not drastically cut short, do not miss out on this step. 

2. Removing Leaves Off The Plant Stems

When you are putting cut roses in a vase, make sure that the leaves are properly trimmed, and none of them are getting submerged in the water. 

Now, you may wonder why! Let me explain. Once the leaves are under water, they start decaying, and this leads to a growth of harmful bacteria which will certainly make your roses wilt faster. 

While not trimming the leaves may seem harmless on the surface, it can considerably affect the time your roses stay fresh. 

3. Trimming The Stems

What really worked for me is trimming the rose stems every time I changed the water. Every few days, when I change the water, I trim about an inch of the rose stem at a slight angle of 30 degrees. 

I would suggest that you do the same, and while you are at it, make sure to do it in a bucket of cold water or under a tap that's running. The shorter the stem, the longer the flower will last as the distance to be traversed by the water becomes lesser. 

You might be wondering why I mentioned cold water. Well, as a rule of thumb, know that roses do better in cooler climates. So, it is always good to store them in colder spots of the room after being plucked.
