How Long To Water Arborvitae With Soaker Hose

Known as “the tree of life,” arborvitae is suitable for various types of climate and topography.

Plus, these emerald green trees grow fast, and the dense foliage makes them ideal for adding privacy to your property. But if you’re wondering, “how long to water arborvitae with soaker hose?” look no further than this short guide.

What Is Arborvitae?

Arborvitae is a part of the coniferous tree family named thuja. These trees are quite an attraction as their needle-like leaves grow in the same direction, lending an overall composed look. Basically, they look like tall, narrow pyramids, though the shape may vary for different types of arborvitae.

How Long To Water Arborvitae With A Soaker Hose?

Arborvitae trees need daily watering, and the soil must remain moist. Hence, I recommend using a soaker hose and setting it on “Low.” During the initial stage (for about a week), the hose should release a few drops every second for about 2-4 hours a day. However, this frequency can be altered depending on the nature of the soil.

After ten days, the root system establishes itself in the soil. So, you can water the plants using the aforementioned method every alternate day. Then after a month, you can reduce the watering frequency to every 3-4 days. Note that the topsoil should be completely dry before you water it again.

Finally, after six weeks, you can water the arborvitae “low and slow,” i.e., only once a week. Think of the plant like a camel- they can take a big and slow gulp and save it for later!

However, I also recommend using your better judgment while watering the arborvitae. As such, water it more frequently during drier and hotter months. Alternatively, reduce the watering routine during cooler, damper seasons.

Basic Arborvitae Care And Maintenance Tips

  • Space out the plants (at least 3-4 feet in between) adequately to avoid competition
  • A well-drained (not soggy) and nutrient-rich soil is ideal for growing arborvitae
  • The pH level of the soil should be well maintained, so it should neither be too acidic (below 7) nor too basic (above 8)
  • Although arborvitae trees thrive during sunny months, they can adapt well to partial shade

With that, we come to the end of this short guide on watering and maintaining arborvitae. Quite easy, right?

Personally, I love growing a pair of matching arborvitae on either side of the entryway to the garden. They give the area an elegant, yet tropical vibe, and nothing beats the dense shade of arborvitae trees during the hot summer months.
