When it comes to moving large amounts of material in landscaping, no tool is more useful than a wheelbarrow.
However, when filling a garden bed, I wanted to find out how many wheelbarrows in a yard of black dirt there were so I could formulate a plan of action. If you need help figuring this out as well, you’re in luck! I’ll cover everything you need to know about moving black dirt in a wheelbarrow,
1. Calculating The Volume Of A Wheelbarrow
Before anything else, the first step should be finding out how much black dirt your wheelbarrow can hold. To do this, simply measure out the flat base of the tray and add that to the sloped part of the tray to get the combined volume.
Although it may sound complicated, it is as simple as measuring the dimensions of the tray and multiplying them together. Take the inside length of the wheelbarrow tray and multiply that with the inside width and height, and you’ll get the cubic capacity.
For the sloped section, simply follow the same procedure, except this time, measure the length of the slope rather than the height of the tray. Multiple the three values together, then divide it by half to account for the slope, and you’ll get the volume of the sloped section. With that, just add the two volumes together, and you have successfully found out how much volume your wheelbarrow can hold in one trip.
2. Carrying Capacity
Now that you have found out how much volume you’re working with, all that’s left is to determine the number of trips needed. Among wheelbarrow sizes, there are three main options used based on capacity, viz., 2 cubic feet, 4 cubic feet, and a 6 cubic feet variant.
For wheelbarrows with a 2 cubic feet capacity, there will be about 13.5 trips needed to move one yard. Similarly, for the larger 4 cubic feet model, only 6.8 loads are required in order to transport the same amount. Finally, the largest 6 cubic foot wheelbarrow only needs 4.5 trips to move a yard of black soil.
As is evident, the larger the wheelbarrow, the lower the number of trips needed to move a yard of material. While there are larger sizes available, they are mainly used for contractual work and heavy-duty landscaping and are not really employed in domestic gardening.
With that, I will conclude my guide on calculating how many wheelbarrows there are in a yard of black dirt. I hope I was able to answer your questions.
Landscaping can be a taxing job to handle, so make sure you are fully prepared for the job, both physically and mentally. Determining a plan of action before you start working can save you a lot of effort down the line.
That said, I wish you the best of luck; take care until next time!
