How Many Wheelbarrows In A Yard Of Sand

Whether you’re making a sandbox or decorating your backyard with pockets of sand, it’s good to know how many times the wheelbarrow needs to be loaded.

I’ve been there, done that, filling up a sandbox, I mean. And the number one confusing part was figuring out how many times I needed to load my wheelbarrow for transferring one yard of sand. I finally figured it out, and here’s what I found:

What’s The Difference Between A Cubic Yard And A Yard?

Also, just putting it out there, a yard is different from a cubic yard. While a yard measures only two dimensions, a cubic yard tells you the three-dimensional volume.

So, one yard is the same as three feet, but a cubic yard is three feet in height, three feet in length, and three feet in width. When it comes to sand, one cubic yard of sand equals 3,000 pounds in weight.

Standard Wheelbarrow Size

Now, a standard wheelbarrow is not limited in size, in fact, it has a few variations. Typically, the smaller ones tend to be two cubic feet in volume and can get as large as six cubic feet. Generally, a garden wheelbarrow for residential use can be three cubic feet if it contains a deep basin, while the shallower ones will be two cubic feet.

How Much Sand Will A Wheelbarrow Hold?

Considering the standard wheelbarrow size and construction, let’s say you select one that is six cubic feet in volume. In case you use this wheelbarrow for holding the sand, I would say 660 pounds. If you are wondering, I got this figure by multiplying the total cubic feet by the weight of each cubic foot of sand.

One cubic foot of sand weighs a little less than 110 pounds. So, multiply 110 by 6 (depending on your wheelbarrow size), and you get a rough estimate of 660 pounds.

How Many Wheelbarrows In A Yard Of Sand?

As I mentioned earlier, how much sand the wheelbarrow holds depends on its size and build. The standard ones come in two or three different sizes, and you also have some options with shallow or deeper basins.

Anyway, let me give you an example with two different wheelbarrow sizes. A two cubic foot wheelbarrow with a shallow basin will require 14 wheelbarrow loads to make one full cubic yard of sand. And, if we consider the three cubic foot wheelbarrow, you will need nine wheelbarrow loads to make one cubic yard of sand.

As you can guess, the three cubic foot wheelbarrow model is more sought after because it allows you to carry more sand per trip.

Final Words

One cubic yard of sand or gravel will have the same length, height, and width no matter the substance you choose to measure. So, the next time you wonder, “How many wheelbarrows in a yard of sand?” Remember, 14 loads of a two cubic foot wheelbarrow fill up one cubic yard area.

Take care and goodbye!
