How Much Do Squirrels Eat A Day

Squirrels are tree-dwelling marsupials that we can often see around our backyards.

I honestly find them incredibly adorable and feed them from time to time. But to do this, one has to be sure that they're feeding the squirrels the right things in the right amounts.

Hence, if you're wondering, "how much do squirrels eat a day?" then you're in the right place.

So, without further ado, let's dive in!

How Much Do Squirrels Eat A Day?

What Do Squirrels Eat?

What a squirrel eats depends on the type of squirrel it is. Though their basic diet remains the same, there are some marked differences too. Now, let's look at some major types of squirrels!

1. Red Squirrels

They are very commonly spotted in North America, and their diet consists predominantly of fruits. They commonly eat shoots, berries, deer antlers, etc. However, they occasionally resort to eating small insects too.

They are hoarders and stash away food during summer to autumn since it gets difficult to find food in colder months.

2. Flying Squirrels

These are tiny beings that live on trees and glide as they move. Thus, when they stretch their skin folds to glide, it appears to onlookers as if they're flying.

These docile critters commonly feed on insects, seeds, nuts, and fruits. If you see one around you, I recommend feeding them pumpkin seeds and pine nuts since they seem to like those a lot!

3. Fox Squirrels

These squirrels are found in three distinct colors and have a super sharp sense of smell. Their diet consists of peaches, mulberries, walnuts, acorns, and Hawthorne seeds. It stores its seeds and relies on that stash and grain available in bird feeders during winters.

4. Gray Squirrels

Primarily herbivores, these furry rodents love to eat acorns, buds, hazelnuts, and bark. If food availability is low, they may turn to eating bird eggs, insects, and small animals.

These squirrels are well-known for stashing vast amounts of food for use in the winter months. Since they don’t hibernate in winter, they have an extra keen sense of smell to help them locate their food stores.

How Much Do Squirrels Consume In A Day?

An adult squirrel can't survive longer than 24 hours without food, which is why it's important to keep food out for them during harsh winter months. They drink up to three spoons of water a day and eat a pound of food in a week.

Baby squirrels, however, are far more in need of constant nutrition and need food every 2-3 hours. In case you come across a baby squirrel without a parent, ensure that you feed it right away or call a local rescue.

Final Thoughts

If I were to talk about a squirrel’s food consumption on a daily basis, they eat from 18-80 grams of food a day. The amount of food eaten depends on the age and type of the squirrel; however, this is the broad range.

If you’re looking to feed a stray squirrel, ensure you find out what type of critter it is and whether it’s a baby or an adult. Moreover, I also request you to keep food out for them during the winter months!

With this, I’m signing off. See you again soon!
