How Much Does A 2 Cu Bag of Mulch Weigh?

It can be challenging to gauge how much mulch to purchase unless one is a professional landscaper.

Different kinds of mulch have different weights, and if you’re experienced in dealing with mulch, a mere look at the yard will determine how much you need. But if you aren’t as experienced, you might be wondering, “how much does a 2 cu bag of mulch weigh?”

Let’s read on to find out!

How To Calculate The Amount Of Mulch Required?

Step 1

You must measure the width and length of the area where you propose to put the mulch. After all, you wouldn’t want to buy extra or less than the required amount of mulch.

Step 2

Multiply the length and the breadth together.

Step 3

The figure you get after this elementary mathematical calculation is the area.

However, the coverage area and weight of the mulch depend on what type of mulch it is, organic or inorganic. Inorganic mulch is the more expensive of the two, despite covering a lesser area than organic mulch.

How Much Does A 2 Cu Bag Of Mulch Weigh?

1. Organic Mulch

Now, let’s look at how much a 2 Cu bag of organic mulch weighs. There are three further subtypes of organic mulch, which are:

A. Wood Mulch

Wood mulch can be either dry or wet, which influences the weight of a 2 Cu bag; however, they cover pretty much the same area. A  2 Cu bag of dried wood mulch weighs approximately 20 pounds, which doubles if the mulch is wet.

B. Straw Mulch

This organic mulch is often used for effective seed growth. Typically, the standard sizes for a bag of straw mulch are 2.5 Cu and 1 Cu.

A 2.5 Cu bag of straw mulch would weigh close to 50 pounds and cover an area of 500 sq. feet. This means that if I could find a 2 Cu bag for straw mulch, it would weigh around 40 pounds.

C. Compost Mulch

This mulch comprises plant and food waste and usually comes in either a 1 Cu or a 2 Cu bag. A 2 Cu bag of compost approximately weighs around 88 pounds and can cover 12-24 feet, depending on the thickness with which it is applied.

2. Inorganic Mulch

With this, let’s move on to inorganic mulches, which usually come in 0.5 Cu bags. These can be heavy and difficult to install, but they last for ages and don’t require frequent replacing, unlike organic mulches.

  • Egg Rock:  A 2 Cu bag weighs around 180 pounds
  • Lava Rock:  A 2 Cu bag weighs around 72 pounds
  • Marble Chips: A 2 Cu bag weighs around 180 pounds
  • River Rock:  A 2 Cu bag weighs around 200 pounds
  • Shredded Rubber Mulch: A 2 Cu bag weighs around 80 pounds

Final Thoughts

Mulch is a great way to get your plants to grow better. A mulched bed saves time and effort expended in pulling out grass and weeds and makes your garden appealing and healthy! It might be a little cumbersome to set up, but it is all worth it in the end.

I hope you have more clarity on how much different kinds of mulch weigh, and I’ll see you again soon with another helpful guide!
