Ever since my son built me a gazebo, I have wondered about the best way to use it. 

I started out by placing garden chairs to entertain guests, but unfortunately, they couldn't visit during the pandemic. Now, the gazebo did act as the perfect setting for Christmas and New Year; however, Santa doesn’t drop by every day. 

So, I had to think of something different to decorate the space. I wanted furniture, offering a clear view of the garden while being cozy enough to have a pleasant conversation. And then it struck me - what if I buy an outdoor glider? 

Purchasing a glider seemed perfect as the comfortable rocking motion was great for relaxing and enjoying the evening tea with my husband. And the dogs would love it too. 

There was just one problem. I had no idea regarding the space needed to accommodate an outdoor glider. So, I conducted a quick internet search to find an answer to the question: how much space for outdoor glider is necessary?

While buying outdoor furniture, especially gliders, several parameters come into play. It’s like joining different pieces of a puzzle, seeing which square fits and which doesn’t, to create a complete picture. 

Similarly, you need to find the appropriate glider that will fit into the available space. You can check out the points mentioned below to make the purchase. 

A) Basic Structure

Gliders are costlier compared to benches and swings because they are easy to assemble. Due to their free-standing installation, you can place the unit in any suitable spot, providing a comfortable seat for two people. 

Now, to accommodate the rocking motion, it’s important to leave additional room in the front and back for smooth movement. 

B) It’s A Single Unit

Irrespective of whether you choose to purchase additional furniture, it would be best to consider the glider as a separate unit. Treat it as the centerpiece to get a better idea of how to utilize the space. 

Once the main unit is in place, it will be easier to work around it, buying the furniture most relevant to your purpose. Whatever you do, don’t neglect the glider for tables and chairs, as it’s more than a piece of furniture, as I’ll discuss later.

Although you’ll be buying a glider, there are several styles to choose from. These styles play a crucial part in the effective utilization of space, blending in with your property. 

For instance, users who enjoy a bench-type sitting will need a glider that can accommodate three people. So, it will be wider compared to other units. 

Meanwhile, high-arch gliders bring to the table the question of height. While the high-arch model is narrow to seat two people comfortably, it’s essential to ensure that it doesn’t affect surrounding structures. 

2. Space Needed For Outdoor Gliders

As you can see from the previous section, multiple factors play a part in determining the space needed for an outdoor glider. While it’s difficult to provide an accurate measurement, I can highlight what worked for me. 

I left four feet of space in front and behind the glider, ensuring free movement for both people and my pets. It’s critical to have access to this space; otherwise, you’ll find it uncomfortable to sit and spread your legs. Moreover, despite its rocking motion, objects in the vicinity of the glider will remain safe. 

3. Storage

Simply allocating an outdoor space for the glider isn’t enough. You need to think about whether it will remain outdoors throughout the year or if you plan to take it inside. 

If you choose the latter, sufficient space will be needed inside your home. This will make for safekeeping, ensuring that extreme weather conditions don’t damage the structure. 

But you wouldn’t want to break indoor furniture and accessories either. So, measure the space of the glider and mark out a similar area indoors. If there isn’t much room, remember not to accidentally start moving as you might knock over a lamp or hit the TV.
