How Small Can A Walk In Closet Be?

Walk-in closets are the perfect storage solutions combining proper design with excellent functionality.

If you’re planning to incorporate a small walk-in closet in your interior design, the first thing to know is its dimensions because such closets come in various sizes. That’s where this guide can help you out by explaining how small can a walk-in closet be

The Minimum Size Of A Walk-In Closet

There is no standard walk-in closet size, depending upon different requirements. However, the minimum size for a walk-in closet should be at least four feet by four feet.

This size provides enough space for the shelves and for hanging clothes on a sidewall or the back wall. Additionally, it does not hinder the opening and closing of the closet doors.

The Size Of A Small Walk-In Closet

If you want a larger walk-in closet, it should be at least 30 inches wide and 48 inches deep, providing some extra space. Moreover, you will need to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act in case a person with a disability needs to use the closet.

The Size Of A Narrow Walk-In Closet

In the case of a narrow walk-in closet, the width should be more than four feet at the very least. Such a closet will have a greater length and a shorter width, and again, you will need to ensure that it meets the standards of the ADA.

The Size Of A Master Walk-In Closet

Master bedrooms generally have attached amenities, such as attached closets and bathrooms. However, unlike standard walk-in closets, closets in master bedrooms are generally larger. They have about 100 sq. ft. of space within them, and their dimensions are 7 feet by 10 feet or 70 sq. ft.

Such closets provide plenty of space for shelves, shoe storage, rods, and other such features. What’s more, these closets allow you to move around to organize your clothes without resulting in a claustrophobic environment.

Dimensions Of A Walk-In Closet With An Island

An island in a walk-in closet should have a walkway at least 36 inches wide on each side to ensure unrestricted movement. You will also need to have space for the shelves and your belongings, meaning the closet should be about 12 inches by 12 inches.

The Depth Of A Walk-In Closet

Ideally, the shelves of a walk-in closet should not be so high or so deep that you cannot reach them. Alternatively, they should not be too shallow that it becomes difficult to store items or too low, so they press against the rods.

The standard depth of such closets is 16 inches, although some walk-in closets may even have a depth of 12 inches.

Final Words

With that said, now it’s time to conclude this guide. Hopefully, now you know not only the minimum size of a walk-in closet but the dimensions of larger walk-in closets and can decide which one to go for.

On that note, we’ll leave you to design the ideal walk-in closet, and see you next time!
