How To Adjust Husqvarna Self Propelled Lawn Mower

A self-propelled lawn mower is a must-have for gardening enthusiasts, who love to give their green space a professional trim.

But if you're using a Husqvarna machine, configuring it as per your requirements can be a tad tricky. Recently, I was having some trouble adjusting the cutting height and the drive control of my mower. Honestly, I had a hard time figuring out the intricate mechanism, and I was scared of tinkering with the wrong parts.

That's when I called on my neighbor, who's also an expert gardener, and he helped me learn a little more about my machine. And ever since, it has been a smooth drive.

Hi! I'm Stacy Smith, your helpful friend in all matters relating to lawn care. And today, I'll tell you everything about how to adjust a Husqvarna self propelled lawn mower. With the help of this guide, I aim to share information that will help you better use the machine, and if you're looking to buy a self-propelled lawn mower, check out our reviews by clicking on the link.

Without further ado, let's get started!

How Does a Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Work?

A self-propelled machine is essentially one that can move by itself. It does not require the user to push but instead, only has to be maneuvered.

Long story short, self-propelled lawn mowers have a built-in throttle or drive system that turns on the machine and automatically moves it forward. Read on to see how I've explained the different parts and their mechanisms that contribute to the functioning of the unit.

Operator Presence Control

This is a control mechanism conveniently located on the top of the handlebar that works as a trigger and brake. If the operator presence control is deactivated, the machine won't move or cut grass.

Drive Control

The feature, too, is available on the handlebar, alongside the operator presence. This includes two handles on each side that work as accelerators, enabling the mower to move faster.

Throttle Control

This is a small handle usually found on the upper part of the mower. It has several positions that function as follows:

  • Choke – for cold-engine activation
  • Fast – for warm-engine activation and regular operation (trimming, cutting, grass-bagging)
  • Slow – low wheel and blade speed (for light trimming and cutting, fuel-efficient performance)
  • Stop – Turns off the engine and blade

Blade Clutch

The blade is guided by both the operator presence bar and the blade clutch. The clutch is typically positioned on the left side of the handlebar.

It works in two positions. To explain further, the pulled up position stops the machine, and the pulled down mode activates the blade.

How to Adjust the Drive Control

With repeated use, it's natural for the drive control to become loose after a point in time. When that happens, your mower slows down, and you don't get the same performance as you did initially. Before I tell you how it can be adjusted, let me mention the different causes that lead to this situation.

  • If the drive belt has worn out, you’d probably have to replace it.
  • If the drive belt is disconnected from the pulley, reinstallation will do the trick.
  • If the drive cable has suffered damages or becomes loose, simply replace it.
  • If there's a grass cutting build-up in the drive wheel, it could impede smooth movement of the mower.

However, if the issue arises from the drive cable, follow these steps for adjustment:

Step 1 - Turn off the unit, and unplug the wire of the spark plug.

Step 2 - Rotate the turnbuckle on the underside of the drive control housing. This will help increase the drive speed.

Step 3 - Use the mower to test the speed and find out if you are comfortable with the pace. Continue re-adjusting, in case you are not satisfied.

Step 4 - If the problem persists, I suggest replacing the drive belt.

Safety Precautions:

1. Before you start using your mower, refer to the manual for safety instructions.

2. Before any adjustment process, wear appropriate gear, including protective gloves, safety goggles, and boots.

3. After adjustments, go for a trial run.

4. Stay away from the cutting deck while making adjustments to avoid injuries.

How to Adjust the Cutting Height

Sometimes the grass in your lawn can be taller  than usual. In case you need to cut grass taller (or shorter) than the set height of your Husqvarna mower, it needs to be adjusted for trimming. To do that, you should:

  • Pull the lever close to the wheel
  • To crank up the level, move the lever forward
  • To bring down the level, move the lever to the rear

How to Adjust the Height of Your Husqvarna Mower

If the mower is too high or low for you, do not fret as this, too, can be configured. To alter the height, locate the knob and carriage bolt, and remove it. For that, you must hold the handle assembly and remove the parts from the opposite side.

Adjust to your desired height and put back the parts. Make sure everything is secured tightly, as you do not want the knob or the bolt to come off midway.

Conclusion

That's all, folks!

Let me just say that adjusting the settings on your Husqvarna mower isn't a challenging task if you follow these simple guidelines.

When you configure the lawn mower, it enables superior performance and maximum results. Basically, when you make a few tweaks, it works precisely how you want, facilitating neat trims with every application.

Ultimately, any gardening tool should make the job easier and enjoyable. That said, a self-propelled lawn mower should be a breeze to use and ideally should not require a lot of maintenance.

In case you find that the preset settings are not right for you, feel free to personalize and modify the individual parts. Just be sure about what you are doing, and put your safety first at all times.

Till next time!
