An old stump in your lawn can be an ugly sight, but you can quickly transform it into an imposing one.
A tree stump with stunning and bright flowers along with lush green grass around it makes it as pretty as a picture. To do that, firstly, you need to dig a hole into the dull-looking stump and plant your favorite plants into it.
So, “how to drill a hole in a tree stump?” Continue reading to find out.
Making A Hole In Tree Stump
1. Draw A Circle On Top
Firstly, use a marker or pencil to draw a circle on top of the tree stump where you want to drill the hole. The hole must be at least 3 inches away from the edge of the stump. If you’re not confident of making a circle, use a large plate or a bowl as a template.
2. Draw An X
Draw a dot approximately at the center of a circle drawn. Once it’s done, use a ruler to draw two lines that cut the center of the circle and extend it to connect the outer lines. It will create a large X.
3. Drill Along The Drawn Lines
Now, it's time to drill. Put on your safety glasses and make multiple holes along the outer edge of the circle drawn. Make sure that the holes stay as close to one another. A ½-inch diameter auger-equipped drill is suitable for the task.
Using the tool, drill along the drawn lines forming the X using the equivalent technique and drill bit. The primary motive behind this is to loosen the wood so that you can easily chisel it away from inside the tree stump.
4. Removing The Wood
Now, it's time to use the wood chisel to scrape out the wood inside. To do that, make sure to keep the sharp end towards the center, and the blunt end should angle outside. Maintaining this technique while removing wood makes the job much easier.
Keep on striking the blunt end of the chisel using a hammer to force it into the wood and loosen it. Use your hands to remove the loosened woods and repeat the task until you have the desired hole depth. For example, a couple of 6 to 8-inch holes will be suitable for planting small plants.
Final Words
If you want to remove the entire stump from the ground, just pour tree chemicals into the holes and wait for 4-6 weeks. You will see that the stump has become spongy and soft once the solution is completely absorbed. Then simply break the rotten wood using an ax.
But if you want to plant trees in them, drill through outside the stump by holding the tool downwards to allow water to drain towards the ground.
