How To Fix A Lawn Mower Throttle Cable

It is no secret that my yard is my stress-buster. From the morning stroll to holding dinner parties, my lawn has been my constant companion.

So, it is natural that I feel uneasy when I cannot maintain it in its pristine condition. A month ago, I realized the lawn needed a trim, so I brought out my good old trusty mower. I had been using it for the past five years, and I cannot imagine lawn maintenance without it.

However, this time when I pulled the throttle cable, instead of hearing the usual roar of the engine, it remained motionless. I tried it again a few more times but with no success. 

Thankfully, my cousin Stanley visited me during the Easter weekend and offered to help me fix the throttle. About an hour later, my lawn mower had been “resurrected!”

Guide To Fixing A Throttle Cable

Why Is The Throttle Cable Important?

The throttle cable is what stimulates the engine of the lawn mower. With continuous use, the cable gets stretched or damaged due to friction. This causes it to break, rendering your mower dysfunctional. Moreover, if you notice the cable becoming difficult to push, know that it’s going to break soon.

How To Repair A Throttle Cable?

The first method I have for you is for fixing old, loose throttle cables and not for broken ones. Such a problem can occur when you use the lawn mower at its highest speed or do not use it for a long time.

Things Required:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pliers
  • Socket wrench
  • Screwdriver

Step 1

Inspect the throttle lever by pushing and pulling it back and forth. Discard the cover of the air filter to check the choke arm of the throttle.

Step 2

Measure the distance between the throttle control lever and the choke arm. It should be anywhere between 0-1 mm. 

Step 3

In case of more distance in between, use a socket wrench to unscrew the cable adjuster nut. Loosen it and adjust its position accordingly.

Step 4

Once the nut is adjusted, pull the throttle cable with the help of a good-quality plier. You must ensure the pliers are tough and sturdy enough to do the job. 

If you’re able to create the perfect tension by pulling the throttle, tighten the adjuster nut to its new position.

How To Repair A Rusty Throttle Cable

If your throttle cable has fallen prey to corrosion, the accumulated rust and dirt make it difficult to control the speed of the lawn mower. Here’s what you must do to fix it.

Things Required:

  • Electrical tape
  • Penetrating oil
  • Silicone lubricant
  • Socket wrench
  • Funnel
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Paper towels or waste cloth

Step 1

Detach the throttle cable and observe both ends. You can even click a picture for later reference during reinstallation.

Step 2

You will notice that a bracket held the throttle in the mower engine. Undo the bracket and attach a funnel to the mouth of the cable. Use some electrical tape to seal it.

Step 3

Place a pan or a bowl on the other end of the cable and pour some penetrating oil through the funnel. This should help remove the rust and dirt buildup inside the cable. Let the oil drain out completely.

Step 4

Now, grab your pliers and pull the inner cable of the throttle. Check if the movement is smooth. Additionally, you can apply a silicone lubricant until the cable moves freely. 

Finally, detach the funnel and reinstall the throttle, and you’re good to go!

How To Fix The Broken Z-bend

This Z-bend wire is what helps connect the old and the new cable to get your mower engine up and running. Here’s how you fix a throttle cable with a broken Z-bend.

Tools Required:

  • Aluminum cable of 7-inch #16 wire size 
  • Pliers 
  • Wire flattener device (optional)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Any suitable wire cutter
  • Marker
  • Aluminum crimps/ wire union device
  • Hammer

Step 1

Bend the 7-inch #16 wire cable in half and flatten it with a pair of pliers. The aluminum should be easy to bend without much pressure. Additionally, you can use a wire flattener for precise results.

Step 2

Use a wire flattener or a big pair of pliers to hold the two inches from the bottom of the #16 wire and twist the upper part. Twist it several times but ensure that it doesn’t snap. Use some sturdy pliers to mimic the Z-bend of the throttle cable. Bend the upper part of the wire at a right angle, hold it with needle-nose pliers, and create another bend. 

Step 3

Next, cut one aluminum wire from the lower end of the Z-bend wire.

Step 4

Keep the original cable on a flat surface. Place the Z-bend wire beneath the cable such that the Z-tip of each is parallelly aligned. Get a marker to accurately determine the parts of the cable and Z-bend wire that needs to be cut. 

Remember to cut the cable precisely at the marked location, whereas the Z-bend wire needs to be cut a few centimeters more. 

Step 5

Finally, insert the cable into aluminum crimps or a wire union device and shove in the Z-bend wire through the other opening. Use a wire flattener machine or a hammer to tighten and secure both the wires, and you’re done.
